And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront.

Sounds right, for sure. I am trying hard to grow edibles on a small scale to provide for myself and hopefully to share locally. I am in Panama and can tell you, it's been challenge after challenge. Proving to be WAY more challenging than I ever thought!! Too much heat (in dry windy season), leafcutter ants, other bugs, small animals, too much rain (in rainy season) etc etc. Not using herbicides etc. My son introduced me to "no dig" gardening practices. It makes sense and am trying it. Not working for me (see above). Not giving up Yet.... but despondent. 😢

I understand your predicament. My sister sprayed around her house. We shared 3 acres. Neighbor on the other side sprayed except for the area next to where I sat to spin yarn. I thank them for that. Then my sister died, so I'm working on recovering her soil. I love eating weeds. I especially love soil because we grew up on a strawberry farm. If soil is not cared for, our weeding was major hard work. Regenerative farming is crucial.
That's weird, considering organic farmers have to spray more often than GMO farmers.

Remember folks we actually only had two jobs on this planet to be human beings instead of just part of the animal kingdom which we are. But to be human beings we had two jobs. i am doing this! for 18 months i have gotten beef and eggs from a farm,grass-fed. i was sick and now i am not because i eat beef and eggs and dairy no fruit or nuts or grain or vegies. i am 67 yrs old on no meds and my BP is 102/66. i do not go to the doctor.

As an American we have many issues in our country. There is a grass roots movement to grow some of our food naturally (organic is a misnomer) and buying from local farmers and local markets. 90% of American Adults have Metabolic Syndrome and children have a host of diseases caused by big food corporations and big pharma. In 2013 I bought Vandana Shiva's movie on DVD , 2013 - Symphony of the Soil . She showed how to recoved the land insulted by chemicals. Have appreciated her knowledgeable and loving of people for aa long time. When the farmers were being disabled and killed from the chemicals and commiting suicide because of the loans they took out based on lies they could not pay back.

I’m a small farmer and we actually started to look into the real organic project, but were disappointing to realize that it was just an add-on. We used to be certified through NOFA but for several reasons have left them. We definitely share the real organic project mission, but we want to move away from USDA association altogether, because we believe they are a tremendous part of the problem. How can we accomplish this?
I respect this point of view very much. Many of our allies also refuse to participate in USDA certification. For myself, I was going to leave if Real Organic wasn't formed. USDA certification is 90% good and 10% terrible. That last 10% destroys the meaning of the entire program. That is why we started the Real Organic Project. But it is important to be clear that we are not just trying to build a trustworthy brand. We are trying to reignite a movement. The movement is as relevant and necessary as it was 80 years ago. By building on the USDA program, we are nto declaring war on the many real organic farmers who ARE certified, and there are thousands and thousands of them. But by creating the add-on label, we are inviting those thousands of farmers to take a stand, along with the millions of eaters who do care. As I have said in a recent talk, if the NOP changes and does its job, then Real Organic would become irrelevant. If they don't, then they will become irrelevant.
How about an organic religion? You wouldneed3rd party certification.
Are the Cooperatives still there? Were they part of USDA? There are definitely too many regulations. Registering with any government entity would be a self deprivating move at this point. Independence would be the start, but finding strength in unity is also your strength. Independent farmers banding together and actually making farms self sustainable. We had enough animals to generate enough fertilizer for our fields and used many different ways to control pests, weeds. It can be done.

@@jant4741 Looking back in history, the British and more opined during the Revolution that we (the US) were a nation of farmers armed to the teeth with guns and more. They knew the farmers were United, armed and it scared them. No matter how you do it, being United is key.
Great listening and watching the show. The younger generation feels moving backward is impossible .Change is inevitable . You are true mam, in the US ,we see only few variety of greens, banana ,few fruits ,few vegetables etc. ,but everything in large quantity ,BIG size and less tasty. Vandana Shiva's approach to parse the problematic outcomes in quantum terms is very very useful. Just through her narration I can see the root cause clearly through all the eons of window dressing and false propaganda. This one method of destroying the memory and knowing of the terrain in order to imbed and single entity that grows only for itself like cancer has been used over and over again in all disciplines including physics and chemistry. If there is one takeaway here is that when you follow the context you will eventually there is only one cumulative root cause of everything that does not expand, benefit, sustain and motivate living fields.

During the early 1980s, I found that the push toward commercial farming systems in West Africa was destroying the commons, creating a change toward private land tenure as the use of chemical fertilizers allowed land to be cultivated more permanently and inherited within families. There were “entrepreneurial” farmers who feared more and more land from year to year and then kept it in production; this added it to their “holding”.
The older system of horticulture had been done for local food production - not profit from commercial crops like cotton - and therefore was sustainable but also consistent with allowing soil fertility to be restored through a process of secondary growth. This was what maintained a large village “commons” (comprising up to eighty percent of village territories) that supported a huge diversity of wildlife and wild plant foods. I also measured the degree of surplus cereal production in the rural villages. I found that the traditional farming was more than adequate to meet food needs, but also that the social and political organization tended to make local leaders responsible for safe storage of surplus storage which was specifically aimed at keeping sufficient food in store so that the whole village could be fed during years of drought. This traditional socio-economic safety was undermined when commercial farming and “Green Revolution” chemical farming was encouraged. In fact, socio-econmic inequality began to emerge.
As the commons shrank, there ws no long enough area for this. Traditional farmers cleared land that had not had sufficient time to restore soil fertility, and could not longer get sufficient yields from such land. Many gave up and became landless laborers on the commercial farms which now began to dominate the territory. These labourers became an emerging class of poor and vulnerable people.
I did these studies while employed by the International Crops Research Insititute for the Semi-Arid Tropics ICRISAT. I also worked with our team agronomist to do test pits long the toposequenes surrounding rivers, and found that the water table sank as deforestation of the former commons occurred. Villages with the most deforestation and commercial farming suffered from wells drying up in droughts, and also had higher levels of soil erosion coupled with flooding in lower elevations when the rains returned. I had seen similar problems emerging when I did a survey of the effects of a severe drought in rural Botswana, although in that country the issue of overgrazing around cattle stations centred on boreholes made the issue worse.

4 month ago i went all organic .A lot of pain disappeared .The calm i felt within a week was something i never felt before it was good .My skin burned for 15 years like i had a sunburn ,that disappeared ,so many symptoms just disappeared .i guess if you dont eat poison you feel better .I mean who wouldve thought.❤

I was overjoyed to hear work being done at Fresno State in the use of cover cropping to reduce inputs and herbicide use. Found substantial savings and benefits for the grower. When an institution in the central valley of CA is looking into this and finding worth it is truly heartening as big ag will need to respond or adapt.
Now we need to look at distribution - particularly for underserved and rural communities.

Look into syntropic agriculture, permaculture, bio dynamic agriculture. You'll learn from these how to improve and maintain soil as well as how to develop your own intuitiv organic farming working with the soil and climate, geographic and wetaher conditions you have.
Tanya from the Lovely greens channel is a good start. Dowding and the no dig techniques is also a great start especially if you have large scale farming.
