Thanks for the video coach! I coach High school soccer and I have some players more experienced than others. This video will help players understand their area of responsibility on the field. I just want to say to some people who commented negatively that you are all wrong. Though this concept may not be new to some as it wasn't necessary to me as well, the way the video was breaking down the concept of the funnel was new. There are always different ways to communicate with our athletes and this opened my mind to that.
Thanks for your kind words coach Martinez. I believe some people probably without even watching the entire video jump to conclusions and put words in my mouth that I've never spoken. A few people just don't understand the difference between rules and concepts and write whatever they want but it is fine with me. I am happy you got the big picture with The Funnel and how powerful it can be when working with youth soccer. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video, all the best and Happy New Year! ⚽
this bloke ain't stupid, he's just trying to come up with answers in an environment not necessarily natural to player development (usa)... in his native brasil, where talent is abundant, kids develop on their own (without much supervision) like basketball players in the usa... playing on instinct gives youngsters a tremendous advantage in any sport compared to being taught & supervised by adults; credit to his analytical faculties for trying to come up with answers; ultimately, however it is doomed for it's lack of individual excellence.
G'day mate, greetings from Australia. I'm coaching an under u12s team. We play 9v9 and unfortunately lose quite heavily each week. As we only train 1 hour a week do you think devoting 15 minutes to tactics each week, starting with the grid then the funnel, will have any success?
Hey gecko221281, it is very difficult for me to give you a reliable analysis without watching your practice. I can say that the minimum practice time should be 1.5 hours with at least 2 days/week. You did not provide other details but yes you need to work on THE GRID: Steps 2, 3, and 4. Tip: You can have to lead THE GRID the closest player to the colored cone that you will call out. If you have only 1/hour of practice you will struggle a little because it is not enough time for a proper training session. I would suggest this: set up the field earlier, so when your players arrive for the practice you use THE GRID as a warm-up and jump right after THE FUNNEL. Do it between 20 to 30 mins. When you feel your players don't need THE GRID, do THE FUNNEL for 20mins each practice talking about closing gaps, shifting, resetting, and SUPER IMPORTANT: the first defender! It might seem like a lot but it isn't. They need to understand the concept of THE FUNNEL. If your league ONLY allows 1 day of practice. Do at your place or any parent's place a meeting where you can show the entire steps, 2, 3, and 4 of THE GRID and also show THE FUNNEL stopping the video to explain: closing gaps, shifting, resetting, and first defender. These team meetings can be very helpful. I hope this helps. Cheers.
This is an excellent concept and I’ll use it with my U11’s tonight in training. Really well explained…our team keep making simple defending errors (usually from goal kicks)…any advice appreciated. Playing from the back sometimes works, but opposing players are often intercepting and scoring quickly.
Love the video. I have a question. How would the defending team defend wife players from the attacking side? Do we just stay compact and leave them free on the wings?
Hi, thanks for the kind words and watching our video. The scenario you presented can be dangerous when playing against stronger opponents, let’s analyze it. Your Opponent: plays the ball wide open (close to the sideline) to their left forward that already passed the halfway line in full sprint. Your team: should shift right immediately using the ball as the point of reference to keep the compact formation and closing gaps. The closest player to ball should attack that ball going out of the funnel and other players can also go outside the funnel in the process depending how the opponent is supporting the attack. It’s hard to predict what fast and good dribblers can create is short spaces, that’s why the compact shape closing gaps is important. Let’s say that in this scenario your closest player to the ball is your right full back so now your player is outside the funnel marking the opponents left forward sprinting with the ball. Your team has already shifted properly and a few things need to happen now: 1) Your right defensive mid needs to cover your right full back but there are situations where your right center back or even another player will slide back to cover and the entire defensive system is moving and adjusting accordingly to the situation. 2) You need to train well your team on how the shifting movement happens and how covering each other is key a element in the process. Sometimes it will look like a seesaw motion when the first defender attacks the ball and the others fall back closing the spaces covering and forcing the opponent against the sideline pushing them to turn back or get rid of the ball. It is very common to see in these situations how the opponent moves the ball back or even switch the ball to the other wing and then your team shifts quickly to the other side doing the same thing over again. 3) The intention is to steal the ball, stop the opponent from crossing that ball or stop the opponent from penetrating in the funnel or taking the ball to the end line and crossing it back which is devastating for defensive systems, it is deadly. Remember one thing: on a full size field switching the ball from one wing to another takes something between 2 to 3 seconds. Using this real game situation is a great drill you can run with your team to prepare them to shift properly, understand what the first defender is and also how to cover each other. I hope I explained it clearly and it can help you. Thanks again for reaching out.
Very nice . I am Brazilian. I worked at Botafogo-RJ in 2005 ( I saw our shirt) and current I am living in South Africa. I had a friendly game against a club here last July and they patented on the field the final tunnel for training. Congratulations for your explanation. You did very well

Hi Plural Media, THE GRID our new video can help you work with your team towards a faster understanding of compact formations all the way to THE FUNNEL. Good luck.
Hi Pete, For the THE FUNNEL video I was still using Adobe Creative Suite and I used (Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, After Effects and Premiere) www.adobe.com/creativecloud/plans.html?promoid=P3KMQYMW&mv=other THE FUNNEL was produced by my friend Gene Blalock in LA - Seraph Films (www.seraphfilms.net/) Today for thumbnails I am using www.photopea.com/ a very Photoshop kind of free option but not as powerful of course. For video editing I use: Movavi video editor. I did not want to keep using Adobe Premiere CC anymore and Movavi offers a lot of power for a great price for both Windows and Mac. Mine is loaded with Effect Sets (www.movavi.com/suite/). No, I am not sponsored by any of these companies. I hope this helps.
Good video coach, like your channel and football philosophy. I coach u8s who play 5v5, have always used a diamond shape from beginning and also a box shape. Have been considering working in how to switch play for my team, so seeing this is helpful. Getting them to reset, delay and use the invisible line will be good. I believe shift will be a hard concept for u8s to grasp, especially only playing 4 outfield players - so I look forward to your video of how to explain this concept to youth/children.
Hi Craig, just to let you know that I've just uploaded a new video that may help you with your team specially when you start working with THE FUNNEL. You will need to choose which steps you believe to be beneficial to your players. Good luck.
Great insructions here and in your other videos. I would like an opportunity to watch a match of yours. I live in the inland empire, Ontario, Ca. so not too far. Thanks. I will shoot ⚽ out an email to you. - Bryan
Hate to break it to you, but you didn’t invent any of these concepts. These are basics of fútbol that have been around for decades. On defense, you compact, and clear the ball away from the goal (away from the middle). On offense, push the pull down the outside (where it’s less crowded), then push the ball across the goal.
Hi Ngaopuni, quality videos take a little longer to produce and I just got a new one called THE GRID that can help you work with your team. All the best.
I like the concept but don’t understand how to implement at the age level recommended. It would help to see how this is explained to a group of 8-12 year old kids. You have 90 seconds to hold their attention. Good luck!
Hi Larry, thanks for your interesting comment. Coach, actually it is SUPER simple to do but yes, there are some little tricks to it. When I first presented this concept to a National Certification class in San Diego, CA one of the certification coach directors said: "I really like this but it is too advanced for young players". He couldn't be more wrong! I assume your training sessions with your team take between 1 to 1.5 hours long. I am sure you can hold their attention for more than 90 seconds. It is a lot simpler than you think but again there's a few tricks that can speed up the process. Soon I will publish a video where I explain my approach to introducing "THE FUNNEL" to a team. I am already working on it.
Simple, apply it to individuals, not the team. Show the left winger where he should be, show the Cf where he need to be...after a few sessions, do it as a team.
Hello Larry, I've just uploaded a new video called THE GRID with 6 steps that can help you understand how to work compact formations with your team. The great about THE GRID is that you can choose which steps to use with your team. I hope this can help you understand how you start the entire process all the way to THE FUNNEL. All the best.
Olaleye, thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately I can't help you with this but what I can tell you is that in order to work as a coach in clubs in the USA, you need a national license. The best of luck to you.
Train your team to play without the ball keeping a compact formation shifting aggressively using the ball as a reference pushing your opponent outside your defensive funnel by closing all the gaps. It works like magic and don't forget to transition quickly using the offensive funnel in your favor. If you have questions, feel free to reach out.
True, today 46 years we all found out about it. Johan Cruyff was a beast and Netherlands lost to Germany. I was sad. Oh, the Gods of Football... 1982 another upset by the Gods...
Then you use the exception of the shifting rule opening wide on both wings get a penetration on either wing. As soon as it happens your team then will override the exception applying the shifting rule again with the ball as the reference. In case the penetrating player can't cut in diagonally or take the shot, he/she will take the ball to the endline and cross it back towards the penalty mark to the penetrating players forcing the defenders to turn around and this is one of the most devastating plays in modern soccer.
The concept never changes. What changes is number of field players and the field dimensions from a full size field 11v11 down to 7v7 (U10) or in between with a 9v9 (U12) field but the concept does not change at all. Your players will need to shift, reset closing gaps, applying pressure on the opponent with the 1st defender just like 11v11 (U14 and up). The only thing I would say is that 7v7 is hard to create a balanced system it takes a while to get it right. 9v9 is easier because you have more options to be creative with the team. TIP #1: don't overthink the "THE FUNNEL" which is a very simple concept once you understand that the rules: shifting, resetting, the1st defender, also the exception to the rule and compact formations makes "THE FUNNEL" a killer concept. TIP #2: NEVER allow your team to get bunched up on either wing when they shift, that will make your system collapse specially when versing stronger teams. TIP #3: ALWAYS train your team to play with 2 systems. The 1st one being your most aggressive and the 2nd a more defensive one for those tournaments where you don't know how your opponent plays or how strong they are. If you train your team to play with 2 systems you will be able to switch systems on the fly without waiting for half time or water break. Not only that: you will have full control of your team and that is when a coach can have a lot of fun! I hope this clarifies a few things. The best of luck to you coach!
@@HammerSoccerClubHSC coachvthank you so much for the reply. I guess what I was really wanting to know is what is the formation to use? 3-2-1? Or 1-2-1-2?
@@HiredGunz98 Coach what really makes you decide what system you are going to play is what kind of players you have and not the other way around. It is really important that you play with your team on team scrimmages so you can feel what kind of players you really have. And also, what position certain players should play at. At this age group everybody wants to play as striker. :) it's hard to find a GKs as well. So there is a lot for you to think about. Also keep in mind that parents sometimes don't allow their players to play at certain positions (e.g: defender or GK) and depending what league your team plays in the everybody plays at least 50% of the game rule is a killer! :) so to me the 3-2-1 seems to be a good starting point. Keep in mind that you defend with one system and attack with another or else you don't win games. The 3-2-1 is a starting point but you should not attack with just 1 or 3. A very common mistake at younger age groups is keeping your defenders in a locked position in the back while the guys up top are trying to attack. When your team attacks your defenders need to push up with the team as a block. Don't leave your defenders in the back leaving a huge space between defense and midfield, this is key! With a 3-2-1 it can become a 1-2-3 with the 2s "just supporting" the attack as defensive mids but not quite going inside the box with the 3s up top. This way they can reset quickly into the regular 3-2-1 when they lose the ball. BUT again, it all depends on the kind of players you have on your team, your understanding of the game as a coach and knowing your players well will determine how you will organize your team. Once you get to know your players be creative coach. It may take a few mistakes here and there until you get it right with the kind of players you have but once you sync in with your team everything will fall into place.
Hi Hired Gunz, just stopping by to let you know that I have just uploaded THE GRID video with 6 steps that can help you prepare your team for THE FUNNEL. Good luck.
Well, the idea is to help fellow coaches. But yes, the method used to teach young players the catch... and if you dare to try it, once you learn to teach it you will cry tears of joy.
You know, a lot of people go to "Brasil" and ask for Brazilian nuts forgetting that for Brazilians it is called "Castanha do Pará" in reference to the state of Pará but it's cool we don't get offended by it. If you can get over cultural differences focusing only in the sport we all love to play and watch you may find a lot of useful information here. All the best.

In case the penetrating player can't cut in diagonally or take the shot, he/she will take the ball to the endline and cross it back towards the penalty mark to the penetrating players forcing the defenders to turn around and this is one of the most devastating plays in modern soccer.
That's how the Juve defend.
Funnel. To correct
Okay thanks.
super
Thank you Thota
Kindly answer me
11 aside with youth football...nah what???
yup, U14 and up :)
How do you use funnel in 7v7?
Good luck.
botafogo carai kkkkkkk
Huh
The title is misleading. Some good commentary, but there is nothing new here, coach.
I agree! He explained it well, but this is nothing new. But, may be good for rec/new coaches.
Well, the idea is to help fellow coaches. But yes, the method used to teach young players the catch... and if you dare to try it, once you learn to teach it you will cry tears of joy.
You're Brazilian! Stop saying soccer!
Oh, man what about in Italy, they call it Calcio!
you lost me at "soccer". it's called football.
HammerSoccerClub - HSC ofc they call it that way , it’s their native language. your example has no sense
HammerSoccerClub - HSC as for the video, it’s helpful. and ffs stop saying soccer
