Thanks, Tom, appreciate the insight! As a server noob, I'd love to see you going through some possible pros, cons, drawbacks and quirks between the big three (Dell, HP, Lenovo) and maybe some of your experiences or lines of thought why you'd choose one over the other.
Actually chrome memory usage is dynamic, if you have low system memory it will use less. If you start using memory in other apps, Chrome will clear it's own ram usage. It keeps ram performance well. I have 64gb and once you get above 16gb, the ram usage only goes up with the number of tabs.
I like how the UDM-Pro remains unused in the background without anything plugged in. I guess you also found out it is basically in an early alpha stage =D
Well Tom uses pfsense since like forever and he always made clear how many features the ubiquiti firewalls lack. He only reviewed it because they sent it to him for free, so yeah what should he do with it other than having it sit there?
@@sitte24 Hi. Well, sure, I still think if he had the impression that it was a good and mature device, he would have found a way to either integrate it into his lab setup, or sold it off to a customer. Seeing it chilling on the shelf more or less leaves room for two scenarios: Either he wants to wait and see if it evolves to be a proper little all in one solution, or he has absolutely no idea what to do with it since it's good for nothing right now :)
Hi Tom, Really appreciate the great reviews you always do, this one is no exception. I was just wondering about one thing, as the server are refurbished; how was its cosmetic condition in terms of grade A (like new), B (Good), C (significantly noticeable)? Thanks.
Just built a PE R740dx with IDRAC Enterprise! I like the Dell PE servers. I almost always have some issues with 2 things though. The 1st is doing the firmware and drivers upgrades from within the Lifecycle controller. The other is that Windows Server OS activation seems to fail if I installed the OS using the Lifecycle controller. I have to use PowerShell to remove an invalid key and then add the new VLS product key. Have you run into either of these scenarios?
Quick one Any chance you could show some info on how to run these without a perc controller? Would like a bit of a how to guy on connecting the backplane straight to the mobo
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS It would be nice to see what apps/vms you will be running on the R630, and how you are conecting to storage back to NAS server, ie iscsi, (multihome/single) nfs, smb etc.. I recently upgraded to 10gbe at home for my servers and am having some issues with asymmetric read/write speeds (almost 100% difference) so I would appreciate any insight into your config. We all love your vids btw, thanks for continuing to put these out. Your pFsense videos have legendary status among my coworkers.
I am planning on purchasing multiple R730XD & R630 for my homelab, and I was wondering how secure iDRAC really is? Is there a way we can manage these servers only on LAN, and not expose them to the internet?
@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Is it possible to get alerts on a failed component / drive across multiple nodes through a single monitoring software? In other words, how can I monitor multiple nodes all at once?
These are the servers from hell. We have 2 clusters of these Dell garbage and have been nothing but problems. From numerous memory issues to motherboard replacements. A pox on Dell. A pox I say!!!

Dude I love this server videos ! they are so informative and nice ! keep it upp !!
Thanks Tom, interesting and insightfull as always. 👍
We’ve got quite a few of these servers at work and they’ve always been rock solid and nice to work with 😀
Same dude, we've 12 of them at work
Tom: with 128Gb ram we can load plenty of applications on here
Chrome: Am I joke to you?
128 is Good for two or maybe three tabs....lol

If you can afford it, get the Enterprise grade DRAC cards. Your happiness in life may depend on it.
I can confirm that!

Excellent, not really any scratches or scuffs at all

@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS You legend Thank you!
Since you said you sell these to your clients, do you get extended warranties from Tech Supply Direct or do you post-service warranty them from Dell?
We get warranty from Tech Supply direct
Will you do a video on how to do app serving?
Can you be more specific?

Nice review, thanks. Just curious, why reviewing R630 when R640 is the latest version?
I like reviewing things that are affordable and still relevant for people to build their labs.

Yes, create a special network for them without internet.

I find that word very challenging because they both sound the same to me.
