Daniela Melchior Interview: Get to Know The Suicide Squad Breakout Star

- James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad features a stacked cast of very talented, accomplished actors including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena and so many more. But do you know who winds up being a major Suicide Squad standout? Hollywood newcomer Daniela Melchior.
Melchior plays Ratcatcher II in the film. She’s got the ability to communicate with and control rats. When she attempts a bank heist with those rats, she's caught and thrown into Belle Reve Federal Penitentiary. However, now she’s getting the opportunity to reduce her sentence. All she’s got to do is take Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) offer and join her Suicide Squad for an extremely dangerous mission.
Given that I’m betting Melchior is going to wind up being a Suicide Squad favorite and the fact that I have very high hopes that the film will send her star soaring in the industry, having her as a guest on Collider Ladies Night was an absolute must. EVERY SCENE Ratcatcher II was in. Seriously. She was absolutely my favorite, with Nanaue a close second.
My favorite scenes of Ratcatcher II are when she was interacting with Bloodsport and Nanaue.
She tries to show Bloodsport that there's actually good in him and not to be afraid of Sebastian🐀
While the rest of the squad didn't exactly understand Nanaue, she was very sympathetic to him 🦈

@@lTSVlBE are you stupid? It literally is one big symbolic connection to the actual suicide squad members themselves, being compared to rats who in the father's words "everyone doesn't like them, thinks they're disgusting, yet they have a purpose"etc.
Also imagine saying that a scene is bad cus it has no action...the films you watch must be bland
And king shark.
My favourite scene is when Ratcatcher calls the rats to face starfish, and when they are crawling over Bloodsport, she puts one arm over him. Its suchs emotional moment, specially after Bloodsports tells why he is affraid of the rats. Its almost like she didnt abandoned him, like his father did.
OMG mine too!! That was such a minor moment, but so powerful to me.

Yeah that was just really powerful.
You could also draw it back to the moment where Ratcatcher 2 and Bloodsport have that "I'm going to get you out of her alive" moment. Bloodsport saved her life twice, first from Peacemaker than from being hit by Starro. Ratcatcher 2 calling the rats was her saving him (and everyone else) when he was out of weapons, and her hugging him was like helping save him from his childhood trauma of the rats that was devoid of love, just simply letting him know that she is there for him and that he'll be okay. Basically saving his heart. Might be a bit of a reach to draw it back to the bus conversation, but I think there is some connection and it was emotional either way.
Daniela was definitely a standout in the movie. I hope she has a nice long career. And man, with that voice and accent, I could listen to her talk for hours.

Fun fact: Sebastian the rat is real, sure they cgi'd some movements here and there but Sebastian is an actual rat.
I heard somewhere that Sebastian's real name was actually Jaws.
He was the rat in avengers endgame as well

When I went to see the movie yesterday, I really enjoyed Ratcatcher 2 as a character and as a person, as the humanity she presents throughout the movie makes you feel attached to her

It started with her laziness right in her first scene and then her making friends with king shark 😭 extremely likeable character and the way daniela played her 💖

Mine is when she puts and arm on blood sport when all the rats are coming and she remembers her dad.
She was the big beating heart of the movie. Hope we get to see her in another DC project someday.
Being the one here that knows daniela from her secondary role as a teenager on a portuguese telenovela "massa fresca" right around when I started learning portuguese. I was really excited and happy for her when the cast was first announced.
I would have enjoyed her being asked if the character's fondness of napping was a personal touch from her, as she herself enjoys a nap. That would be nice.
I liked her character and Sebastian should get more roles from this point forward.

@@hallu9438 It's funny you should mention the Russian accent. My wife is Brazilian and naturally speaks Brazilian Portuguese and when we first started talking to each other over voice chat (we met online), she did have a vaguely Russian accent. According to her, Portuguese apparently shares some commonalities with Russian and may share a root language from way back when. I found that interesting.
She nailed the character. And WOW, is she gorgeous!

She and Bloodshot were the standouts in the film for sure. Did a good job playing the slacker with a loving heart. I look forward to seeing more of her.
I usually ignore my Portuguese descent, only acknowledging it during Euro/World Cup but I did feel some pride finding out she was Portuguese when I was curious about her character mentioning being in Portugal and her accent. I've even made a point of telling Portuguese colleagues that, "Theres a Portuguese girl in Suicide Squad and she was really good."

@@BlakHeart666 My wife made the same mistake and initially called Idris Elba's character Bloodshot instead of Bloodsport, and she's supposed to be the DC fangirl, lol.
I was all like "That's a crappy Russian accent", then she mentions the cold streets of Portugal and I realised I have the same crappy Russian accent because I'm Portuguese. Turns out she has 1000+ TV credits but all telenovelas so she's[was] only famous among Portuguese grannies.
@@CanalTremocos I was surprised when Porto city appeared on the scene, that's when I was like "wait a minute, is she portuguese?" I always thought she was some foreign actress because of the accent but never noticed the "portuguese" in her... but Porto is immediately recognizable in the movie.
I would actually 100% watch a sitcom-style show about Ratcatcher 2 and King Shark living in London, hauling trash and slinging pizzas. There would be so many strange and unique opportunities with that premise. Make it happen, WB.
Her screen presences is absolutely phenomenal, there aren't very many actors/actresses who can catch my attention the way Daniela did. Definitely would love to see more of her in the DCEU, as well as other projects in the future.
Her and Idris stole the movie. Harley Quinn did a lot a cool stuff, but I cared more about Ratcatcher2, Bloodsport Polka Dot Man & King Shark. It was personally the most entertaining film in the DCEU. Joker is probably the best film, but this was the most enjoyable.

God it wouldve been so great having batman or something stop polka dot man in a cold open to a justice league movie.
When I watched the movie I was blown away by her performance. She reminded me of Ana de Armas from Knives Out. I’m so happy to see that she is just as sweet as her character in this interview. I hope she is in a lot more things in the future. A talk show with her and Perri would be awesome haha

I feel that's the thing about suicide squad. They're seen as villains because of their past (killing, stealing, etc) but they do save people
Thats something this movie this gets that the original didn’t, in the comics decent people and terrible people both are thrown into the squad, sometimes only the bad ones live or only the redeemable ones live or a mix of both live.

Great interview with Daniela Melchior. I love the last scene where Ratcatcher summons the rats. But my favorite scene is when she talks to King Shark and offers to be his friend.

That ratcatcher taika Watiti scene was the scene which turned the movie into ART.
Incase someone missed the parallel, the rats metaphorically represent all the people who have been told they are not good enough or good for nothing or losers not to mention all the D grade unheard of, unrecognized characters used in the movie too.
It says that even though these people (good for nothing, losers etc) or these character are small and dispensable and not loved, that doesn't mean they are any less.
If they want and are determined to do the hardwork they can achieve wonders even when the odds aren't in their favor.
Just like those D grade characters saved the day and hopefully the entire planet inturn winning more hearts than even the A grade characters did.
So one must never give up no matter the odds or what people tell them. If you think you can make it big and are willing to do whatever it takes, every force against you will bend.

I have never heard of this actress or her character until I watched suicide squad, now I love her ❤. Ratcatcher was my favorite character in the movie and I was not expecting that. Daniela is so adorable in the movie and I hope we get to see more of her character in the future.

One of the unspoken pleasures of watching The Suicide Squad - seeing Daniela and being completely oblivious to how amazing (and who are we kidding, hot) she is until much later in the movie, without any change to her outfit or makeup or anything like that.
