What makes this version of the story so resonant to me is that its an act of desperate self defence in which Celestia wields the elements and overpowers her sister. yeah, I love this narrative a lot more. i can't imagine celestia would banish luna if she had another way. this story really highlights the sad reality of it all and makes me sympathetic to both. luna; because she feels unappreciated and alone. celestia; because she has to choose between her sister, who also threatened to kill her (atleast in this animatic it feels heavily implied) or the people she rules over, who she has an obligation to protect and in essential did nothing wrong. celestia was just in a lose-lose situation, because if she had allowed nightmare moon to win, she would've failed to protect her people.

The animation is awesome, but the idea of Celestia having pink hair that turned to what it is now due to the usage of the elements against Nightmare Moon was a popular fan theory a long time before the animation, which likely is the reason why this fan idea is used in the animation. The idea of Celestia's own hair color being a reminder of how she had to banish her sister was rather popular among parts of the community, at least by the time season 2 ended.

Hasbro really didn’t dive deeper into the lore surrounding Celestia and Luna on the show, so this video “Lullaby for A Princess” sure shed more light onto these Royal Sisters of Equestria.
I love the imagery, it’s suttle, but they show her tucking in her little sister to sleep every night, and even now as she’s banished in the moon, she sets the moon every night and rises the sun, still tucking in Luna to sleep.
yup. i think looking at celestia tucking baby luna in bed until she grew up and went away is one of the most heartbreaking parts of this. and i love the lyrics, especially the part “carry the peace and the coolness of night, and carry my sorrow in kind”

I’m not sure if you’ve listened to this one already, but it’s another fan animation and it goes really well with this one since it tells Luna’s story before she turned to nightmare moon. It’s called ‘The Moon Rises’, the original was taken down I believe, but it was re-uploaded by Pony Preservation. The singer in that animation is Ellie Monty, a well regarded vocalist in the MLP community. She does Luna’s voice perfectly, and the animation is also very well done, definitely worth checking out.

It also came out before season 4 of the show, if I’m remembering correctly, so obvious parallels were drawn between Luna’s canon banishment and this fan-made one. At times, it felt almost like the show was giving a nod to this masterpiece. So glad WarpOut still gets the praise they deserve to this day, it’s truly an amazing feat 👏✨
When I was younger, this song would make me sob my ass off. Imagine how guilty she must have felt. Imagine having to do that to your little sister, imagine having to deal with all that; especially to someone who you’ve been with since they were a baby. Someone you took care of. It hurt so much to even think about it. Even now, I still feel myself tearing up. It just brings up so many emotions; old and new.

Like Celestia literally had no choice but to banish Luna in this depiction, it cannot be argued. (It’s been forever but iirc there were debates in the fandom over how ruthless a 1000 banishment was and that there had to be other options) But here, we see she was about to possibly be killed by Nightmare Moon, and if she let herself get killed, it would have been over for everyone. It was a split second decision to save Equestria. OBVIOUSLY she was part of the reason it came to that climax in the first place, but just looking at that specific moment, no one can argue that she had other options. And I also love the intense fear and shock on Celestia’s face directly afterwards, like “What have I done?” It’s amazing. I believe this came out before the release of the MLP episode that showed the backstory too (the ep where Twi drank the potion to see the past), so you can imagine how excited everyone was when that episode came out. If the animation wasn’t out at that time, the song definitely was though.

as an animator who never knew that this was hand done back in the day and learning that recently continues to give me so much love for this animation. Lullaby for a princess never fails to make me wanna cry. Specifically the ending with celestia lowering the moon. She is quite literally, putting her sister to rest. And she does this every time she raises the sun for the next 1000 years. Thats tough and really good storytelling in such a short time.
One thing this animation made me notice was that Celestia banishing Luna was irreversible. I.e Celestia makes this choice, then immediately loses the ability to harness the elements, and also the ability to bring her back. It takes like a century for that opportunity to come. I like how this animation presents it as a very quick decision Celestia made. Like obviously she didn't have a choice in that moment, but the way that moment of realization hits Celestia is drawn hits hard.
1000 years. it also makes you realize that Celestia had to raise and lower the moon every night. with her sister's image on it. every, single, night. its no wonder she went to the lengths she did to free her sister.

This song and animation never cease to give me goosebumps every time, There's still The Moon rises and Fall of The cristal empire, two great animations too that give more depth to the characters, I think you'll like them
The music was a banger when it was made. Many covers done. A counter song made from the perspective of Luna. And then the animator started this. Animatic released. And then that finale s3 released that showed the banishment too. And they were like "AAH SO CLOSE" But they kept on animating and the gem was made
Genuinely cant imagine cerstias pain having to rise and fall the moon every night seeing her sister through the moon and remembering that dreadful night. Celestia never wanted to hurt luna she cared deeply for her, it just so happened that ponies took more intrest in her instead of her sister.
My personal favorite is Come Little Children. Now that is an amazing one! Yeah it’s the song from Hocus Pocus, but the MLP story this song has is so good!! It still goes into how Luna became Nightmare Moon from the jealousy she has for her sisters day and what she has an idea she thought could satisfy her want of others enjoying her night. Another is a fan made song of how Luna and Celesta became alicorns through a deal Celestial makes with Discord after he sings a song, Trust in Me (not to be confused with Ka from the Jungle Book’s song).
Oh and Midnight Frenzy!!! I LOVE that one too! I listen to it all the time as I can connect to it on a personal level. I’m kind of a Night Owl. I get my energy in the evening.
as far as I remember, the storyboard version of this animation came out BEFORE the season 4 premiere where we see the fight between the princesses, so they actually predicted it really well, unless the show was inspired by it
The fananimation is finally being watched. Honestly the fandom is very talented I recomend watching more of it. Another song The Moon rises is from Luna's perspective in their fight. And since you watched Crystal Empire episode I recomend the fananimation The Fall of The Crystal Empire. The story superb,the animation beautiful and the dialog and voice acting PERFECTION!

Lullaby for a Princess is one of the masterpieces of brony music, and the animation is so well done. This was during a period in the mid 2010s where there was a series of incredible PMVs and music like this coming out, and it's one of the huge reasons why I became such a huge fan of MLP in the first place.
There’s also a cover/another version of lullaby for a princess in the P.O.V of Luna, called Luna’s response, the lyrics tie into each other really well, definitely should check it out when you have time!

I am SO glad you reacted to this, because when I watched your season 4 ep 1 and 2(forgive me if I’m wrong on the episodes, it’s been a while) reaction and there was the scene of Luna and Celestia’s battle and I believe you said something along the lines of she didn’t look sorry that she did it and I was like yes! That’s why I wish it was more like the animation for this! Not the style or anything but seeing Celestia crying and actually looking heartbroken about having to banish her sister. This animation is so much more emotional and believable than the actual show and I just wish this is how it went. The laser battles are cool and all but I want some emotion! At least for this scene I want something that will get me on the brink of tears as Celestia realizes what she’s done, how she had lost her sister, how she wouldn’t see her again for another THOUSAND years, and even then it’s likely she would come back seeking revenge rather than looking to forgive Celestia.
This animation was being made before the actual show showed it. The animator took some time to make it less accurate to the show but just as epic as it is today. The show never dives into the fights leading up to Luna's transformation, so this is mostly regarded by the fans as the canon aside from the battle. One animator hand drew each motion since season 1 all the way to when this was released in the end of season 4 it took the animator 3 years to make this project. It's such a work of art and passion it deserves all the praise it gets.

Never heard of this song before but it popped up on my feed right after I finished a story about a girl who had to kill her sister because her sister had been taken over by like a parasitic demon thing and tried to kill everyone. It was a sad story and then this song came along and made me way sadder.
It also kind of highlights why celestia took the steps she did. Celestia's plan to redeem her sister was pretty insane. she was working on it for at least a century or more. in the ep on ponyville's history its revealed celestia told the apple family where to settle (right at the edge of the everfree forest, right near her old castle). she set up everything. gave twilight the books on nightmare moon. had learned about rest of the mane 6's connection thru the sonic rainboom. arranged for the summer sun celebration to happen in ponyville. sent twilight there. then released Nightmare Moon from her lunar prison (knowing after she found the old castle abandoned she'd go to the closet pony settlement, IE ponyville). and since twilight had the books, she knew where to find the elements. all of this is f***ed. but imagine going thru that with your sibling, then having to raise and lower the moon with their image burned into it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. it makes it very understandable the length she would go thru to fix it.

Honestly, I wish canon MLP made more episodes where Celestia was shown "vulnerable" like this. She almost always has a stoic face and because of that it's hard to see her as a friend of Twilight. Luna and Cadance have their emotionally vulnerable moments, but Celestia is almost always shown as the professional ruler.

Genuinely cant imagine cerstias pain having to rise and fall the moon every night seeing her sister through the moon and remembering that dreadful night. Celestia never wanted to hurt luna she cared deeply for her, it just so happened that ponies took more intrest in her instead of her sister.
My personal favorite is Come Little Children. Now that is an amazing one! Yeah it’s the song from Hocus Pocus, but the MLP story this song has is so good!! It still goes into how Luna became Nightmare Moon from the jealousy she has for her sisters day and what she has an idea she thought could satisfy her want of others enjoying her night.
Another is a fan made song of how Luna and Celesta became alicorns through a deal Celestial makes with Discord after he sings a song, Trust in Me (not to be confused with Ka from the Jungle Book’s song).
Oh and Midnight Frenzy!!! I LOVE that one too! I listen to it all the time as I can connect to it on a personal level. I’m kind of a Night Owl. I get my energy in the evening.

This is a masterpiece of animation with beautiful visuals and an amazing song
as far as I remember, the storyboard version of this animation came out BEFORE the season 4 premiere where we see the fight between the princesses, so they actually predicted it really well, unless the show was inspired by it
The fananimation is finally being watched. Honestly the fandom is very talented I recomend watching more of it.

Fun fact about this animation: in the “making of” video, it’s mentioned that each background is hand painted watercolor on paper which was photo copied and animated in adobe

I love that one too! Luna's transformation was underwhelming but still the whole thing was overall amazing. I really loved the animation, kinda reminded me of old Disney

Fanworks, whoopee!!!!!!!! Would love to see Luna's response, or honestly any other sort of fan animations too. It's just cool to dive into.
Lullaby for a Princess is one of the masterpieces of brony music, and the animation is so well done. This was during a period in the mid 2010s where there was a series of incredible PMVs and music like this coming out, and it's one of the huge reasons why I became such a huge fan of MLP in the first place.
There’s also a cover/another version of lullaby for a princess in the P.O.V of Luna, called Luna’s response, the lyrics tie into each other really well, definitely should check it out when you have time!

I am SO glad you reacted to this, because when I watched your season 4 ep 1 and 2(forgive me if I’m wrong on the episodes, it’s been a while) reaction and there was the scene of Luna and Celestia’s battle and I believe you said something along the lines of she didn’t look sorry that she did it and I was like yes! That’s why I wish it was more like the animation for this! Not the style or anything but seeing Celestia crying and actually looking heartbroken about having to banish her sister. This animation is so much more emotional and believable than the actual show and I just wish this is how it went. The laser battles are cool and all but I want some emotion! At least for this scene I want something that will get me on the brink of tears as Celestia realizes what she’s done, how she had lost her sister, how she wouldn’t see her again for another THOUSAND years, and even then it’s likely she would come back seeking revenge rather than looking to forgive Celestia.
This animation was being made before the actual show showed it. The animator took some time to make it less accurate to the show but just as epic as it is today. The show never dives into the fights leading up to Luna's transformation, so this is mostly regarded by the fans as the canon aside from the battle. One animator hand drew each motion since season 1 all the way to when this was released in the end of season 4 it took the animator 3 years to make this project. It's such a work of art and passion it deserves all the praise it gets.

This animation was the thing, that bring me to the fandom. I saw this an thought "wow, it's beautiful! If fans of some kid show do such things, maybe it's not so bad, and I should check it out?" So i have really warm feelings about it

Lullaby for a princess was so big in the fandom and surprisingly close to actual canon and some fans actually would mistake the events in this music video for canon completely.
Yes some fan animation works, there is one called "Who Knows - Song by 4Everfreebrony" was animated by shgurr. Also there is another song i pretty sure you will like it is "4everfreebrony - This Is What It's Like" but this one is just song and no animation

Never heard of this song before but it popped up on my feed right after I finished a story about a girl who had to kill her sister because her sister had been taken over by like a parasitic demon thing and tried to kill everyone.
It was a sad story and then this song came along and made me way sadder.
So, obvs, the next suggestion is The Moon Rises. Also fan made and of similar caliber to Lullaby
It also kind of highlights why celestia took the steps she did. Celestia's plan to redeem her sister was pretty insane. she was working on it for at least a century or more. in the ep on ponyville's history its revealed celestia told the apple family where to settle (right at the edge of the everfree forest, right near her old castle). she set up everything. gave twilight the books on nightmare moon. had learned about rest of the mane 6's connection thru the sonic rainboom. arranged for the summer sun celebration to happen in ponyville. sent twilight there. then released Nightmare Moon from her lunar prison (knowing after she found the old castle abandoned she'd go to the closet pony settlement, IE ponyville). and since twilight had the books, she knew where to find the elements.
all of this is f***ed. but imagine going thru that with your sibling, then having to raise and lower the moon with their image burned into it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. it makes it very understandable the length she would go thru to fix it.
i used to watch this so much as a kid and i still know all the words, the animation is absolutely incredible and the music still gives me chills

The animator behind this was insane: Worked on this, animating hand by hand all on their own for 3 years, dropping this masterpiece and then completely disappearing.

Sweetie Belle & Rarity have had a similar relationship to Celestia & Luna mentioned in season 4 episode 19. That episode brought me back to this song.
After seeing this animation, Hasbro actually upgraded there flash package, and increased the detail and shading in the later seasons and in the movies.

Honestly, I wish canon MLP made more episodes where Celestia was shown "vulnerable" like this. She almost always has a stoic face and because of that it's hard to see her as a friend of Twilight. Luna and Cadance have their emotionally vulnerable moments, but Celestia is almost always shown as the professional ruler.
