I'm actually using my bmpcc4k often to shoot a still for a thumbnail while shooting my videos. The quality and especially the colors are amazing. Thanks for the great video
This is awesome man! I always use my Lumix S5 for photos but have frequently thought about how my bmpcc 6k would do. Cool to see you out there creating with this great camera. Keep It up 🤟
Unless the rolling shutter is improved in still mode, I just don’t see the point. Just shoot short motion clips and get in camera review, and superior temporal noise reduction when you need it. Anyway good vid, I enjoyed watching
You can EASILY get rid of the rolling shutter in Davinci resolve with 2 clicks. In the inspector, go to stabilisation, put it on camera gyro (camera&Resolve must be updated), push the slider to 0 (not -anything, just plain 0), and click stabilize. Finished!
I actually recently used it as a second photo camera on a shoot. I was photographing an event and I wanted to two cameras so I could quickly switch between different focal lengths without losing sacrificing too much lens speed. I had my 6KPro on the Tokina 11-20mm for ultra wide shots and my Fujifilm XT4 on a 30mm or 56mm Sigma 1.4. I was surprised how nice the Blackmagic shots came out. The main challenge was really just the UI. I eventually grabbed the 6KPro because, even though Fuji Shoots amazing video, it often feels rather cumbersome to operate for video shooting. But when it comes to stills, the Fujifilm is a dream to shoot on and the 6KPro is clunky (and seriously, why no JPEGS?). Nevertheless, I find that the two cameras complement each other nicely. The XT3 works great as a B-Cam for video interviews and the 6KPro is helpful to throw a second lens on for stills. More and more, all these cameras produce amazing with features/control/form-factor making the difference in which tool is right for which project.
It is a very interesting experience to take stills with a "cine" camera. Using a cine lens for stills is also funny. One thing not to scoff at though is the inbuilt ND filters in the BMP6K Pro.
It'd be great to take more stills with my BMPCC6k but the stills button is so unreliable, I usually have to press it 2-4 times before a still is actually taken and even after that there's only a small indication on the HUD that shows it was taken, which means I can't get rid of the HUD to see the whole frame.
You mentioned the post workflow being difficult, what made it hard? The stills come out as CDNG files don't they so surely those are easy to edit in Lightroom and provide a lot of latitude.
They do have a lot of data to work off of as they are basically raw files, they just felt very different went trying to get the look I usually get from Sony raws and other still cameras.
Just check your focus and make sure you have good contrast ratio with your lighting. You can also just take a still with another camera too, that's always higher quality.
For someone who never owned a BMPCC (or used any Blackmagic stuff), what's so difficult about the editing workflow? Does it not output RAW images like other cams? This hasn't been mentioned in the video.
Well to start it isn't really a stills camera so you cant review your stills in camera. You have to offload it and look at them. After that it's normal workflow as you would with raw images from any camera. The files do color grade differently than other raw images but it's basically the same. Just cumbersome!
I have the camera, this is exactly the experiment I was looking for. Thanks for creating this. Based on the result, is this a camera would you use for a still project?
I love blackmagic so I brought their camera for stills and some video. Surprise and yes I found out what you did but hanging in there. Your video help confirm what I found and showed me some work arounds! Thanks much!
Nope. It looks really rough... not a knock on BM the 6KCC is my first choice for filmography, but its highly specialized. There are very affordable and more powerful stills only cameras that I would recommend buying in addition to a BM if you need it.
It would have been good if you included the actual image specifications (resolution, DPI, file type) and how to get the best stills-image quality, like how this guy did: ruclips.net/video/HBJ3Rri9yMc/видео.html. Just looking at your graded shots over RUclips doesn't really help determine if the photos from the BMPCC is actually acceptable to be considered "photos" and if they also can be printed.
A very capable camera!! It can be used for BTS shots or reference at a scene. Always loved bmpcc
Absolutely! It’s a powerful little thing

That’s a great use for it for sure! Thanks for watching Bo!
@@danielwcunningham looking forward to watch some more Blackmagic content on your channel ✌️

I recently tried this because of this video and surprisingly it worked like a charm.
Great video! It really helped bring clarity for me on this querstion.
anamorphic photos that I got using the Sirui 1.33x and the Pocket 4k were so so so good. Hated the workflow but the end result was rad.
Heck ya that sounds awesome! Would love to see them! But the workflow is pretty bad😅
@@danielwcunningham The photo's are in a video on my other channel caffeine and cameras.

Stoked to be the first sponsor! First of many 👀
these came out pretty dope! what do you use/do for color grading? love the colors on these.
I edited these photos in Lightroom and I color my footage in resolve:)

It was definitely a fun experiment! haha and those ND's are a LIFESAVER

Exactly😅 it’s a hassle and you definitely have to work for it!
So true.. I started to use the Bluetooth+ app and just go with that.. No shake from pressing the button and guaranteed picture on the first press lol
Great video man!

Thanks! I used the 1/8 pro mist filter from polarpro!
@@danielwcunningham thank you bro!

Awesome! Enjoy the new camera man!
Has Blackmagic released any update that allows for stills to be previewed? Im going to see if they can add this update
@@RudyRender not that I know of!

I love everything about your aesthetic. What the filter on the A-roll? Is that like cinebloom
Hey! Thanks Jazmin! Yeah it’s a pro mist filter! I use the one from polar pro with their matte box.
Awesome photos! Nice work!
Let’s go baby!!!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
The definitely need to update it preview stills. If they can add gyro previewing should be a easy feat. Hopefully the right person/people see this
I like not being able to preview stills, reminds me if shootin film.
Any update? Has there been a firmware update to let you see the stills you took in camera?
Not yet
Those came out dope!!🔥
Thanks dude!
What software were you using on the laptop in the field to preview the photos, and did you shoot in 4k ProRes or 6k RAW?
I just previewed it on the SSD on my mac and I shot it in 6k raw (.dng)
@@danielwcunningham Thank you for the reply.

We shot on the Sony a7iii!
Thanks man. I was looking for this video a month ago and it didn’t exist yet 😂.
Glad I could provide😅 haha
What's the lens that Josh is talking about?
It’s the tokinon 11-16! Interesting little budget lens

If you need a thumbnail for a video or something like that it’s great for it. But I would not use it for a stills project. Hope that helps!
What lenses did you use - looks Rad!!
Sigma 18-35 and Tokina 11-16! Thanks!
are the grains and noise post work raw ?
The grain was added!
Awesome pix 😁❤ what's that lens ? Sigma 18 35?
Thanks! Yeah I used the 18-35 as well as 11-16😁
@@danielwcunningham awesome. How do you like tokina 11-16 vs sigma 18-35?
I think the sigma is a better lens. If you get the Tokina get the cine version of it. Just better quality all around.@@rezaVfx
Is there any way to preview your photos without an external device yet?
Not that I know of. The playback on the 6kpro is super weird
which shutter angle do u keep with and also hard to push the bottom
The lower the shutter angle the higher the shutter speed equivalent so anywhere around 90 or 45 degrees
how do you edit your braw stills in the 6k pro, I tried Adobe software and It doesn't read the files any help bro?
I brought them into lightroom classic and they worked! Let me know if you have any issues with that!
