  • The Santos House
The Santos Ancestral Home in Malolos, Bulacan is regarded as the finest manifestation of an art deco residence in the Philippines. The mansion was rebuilt in 1933 by Dr. Luis Santos, a renaissance man and renowned eye-doctor trained at Johns Hopkins University, who created a house that reflected an identity that was uniquely his.
Elements of art deco are evident throughout the entire house, from ornately-carved balusters featuring scroll and peacock motifs, tropical fruit finishes carved in hardwood, to waves, linear and geometric patterns, and sharp edges in the staircase ceiling.
The works of two National Artists, Fernando Amorsolo and Guillermo Tolentino, are prominently displayed in the premises.
There is nothing like it in the entire Philippines.

Although not complete and perfect, this video is a very good documentation of unique Philippine architecture and related arts found along VLI routes in Malolos, Bulacan. Santos home looks well maintained. Does its owners accept walk in visitors for a fee?

Imagine we've lost so many artisans over the last 100 years...centuries of craftsmanship and talent gone in a 2-3 generations. These things don't exist anymore, except machine carved or 3d printed ones. Sad.
