A couple reacting to Lamneth in 2019, I had a better chance of seeing bigfoot while being struck by lightning holding a lottery winner. But here it is and I'm happy this great album is being recognized. Thanks two beautiful souls.
Caress of Steel was a very underrated album. But real fans know its some of their best work. And "The Necromancer" is my favorite song from that album. And Bastille Day is quite good as well. RIP Neil Peart
no kidding man...they thot we were wierdos, but we knew what we were doin...is everyone starting to catch up?....maybe so..:i just thank God i was there for it all back in the day...
I am a huge Rush fan. This is one of my favorite songs off of one of my favorite albums. I am 53, and heard this the first time when I was 15. I only really figured out the true meaning of this song recently. She got it on the first listen! That is Amazing! Love your channel!
thx, love your reaction. the first part, in the valley, is one of those music pieces that stays with you, i think it's just beautiful. and the lyrics of the whole song are amazing, very well written, thought provoking. amazing song by an amazing band...
This is so awesome!! I was going to suggest “TFOL” for your reactions but I didn’t know if you were “ready” for it yet. This album is the first Rush album I bought along with “Fly By Night” back in 1975. This album “Caress Of Steel” is my most favorite Rush album!!! 😃😃
Another great reaction! This album was not well received when released but all true fans know it’s brilliance. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to future videos.
That part "why must my crew desert me when I need a guiding hand" is, I believe, the death of the parents and remains for me the most powerful part of the song. The drum part is all the things that are shoved in our face. If you listen again you will hear Alex's solos become more broken and more strained nearing the end...I E aging. It really is brilliantly done. Great reaction on another epic piece.
This was a wonderful 6 part epic song from Rush🤗 The 20 minute journey thru it is an enjoyable one and a good study 🎸🎤🎵 Wonderful reaction Enoma 🎏📯 I agree it's a gem of a piece😊

I really enjoyed watching your reaction, for the first time today. I was taken away by the pureness and elegance... the natural beauty and radiance of your smile and those eyes... Wow, what a ride that was... with the beauty of this amazing song! You really are a lucky woman. No, just teasing!! I was enthralled by your natural glory, ma'am, you shine so brightly. Wow, you two have a lot of insight that I appreciate your sharing. Such broadness and depth to your knowledge and wisdom. I agree with both of you on all points. I want to share something that I have concluded after having listened to this song enough times to digest it's complexity. One of the lessons or meanings of this journey of life, I believe, is that to not go flat out after a lofty, ultimate goal, such as climbing the mountain to get to The Fountain of Lamneth, so hard that you miss what love that was before you. Kind of like spending that great, youthful exuberance in one direction so hard as to not realize what's really important in life. Kind of like "the pie in the sky" syndrome. And like a big reminder to all of us 'go get er's' to smell the roses along the way, or to say " I love you" along the way. What do you think? Am I trippin?! I have been a huge rush fan since the mid seventies and have been fortunate enough to have seen four shows throughout the years, but this song eluded me until a couple of months ago. I'm looking forward to watching more of your reactions to musical excellence. Thanks! Peace and love to you both.💜 Sincerely, Ronald K. Brower u.s.n., ret.
I must say, your reactions are amazing. Well reasoned and insightful. What's truly amazing is that you guys "get it" ×the the deeper prog gems. Keep it up! PS. I love the sounds of Mumbai in the background. Keeps it real! Namaste.
"Give me back my wonder, I've so much more to give. I guess it doesn't matter, There's not much more to live". Exactly precisely where I've been for a few years. And that "cask of '43" was a companion for too long, lol.
Rush has several songs like this, 2112, Cygnus X-1 Book 1 & Cygnus X-1 Book 2, Natural Science, The Camera Eye, The Necromancer, La Villa Strangiato which you listened to already.
Wow...Fountain of Lamneth...you are really diving into the deep cuts for this one...i have to agree with one of the other comments posted here that Lamneth flirts with greatness but never quite gets there for me as a cohesive unit but it was a necessary stepping stone to get to 2112 which is absolutely brillant...this song and album splits Rush fans down the middle many dont like it much at all but i have Rush friends who adore this album and Lamneth makes their top 5 list of Rush songs...when you get to 2112 you will see the fruition of the experiments that didnt quite work in Lamneth
I love this song. This was one of their earliest attempts at writing rock-epic pieces, the other being “By-Tor and the Snow Dog” from the album “Fly By Night”. Alas, they didn’t quite have it down yet. In fact, this song very nearly killed the band. Placed on the album “Caress of Steel”, this song was the B side, with the A Side being three shorter songs, “Bastille Day”, “I Think I’m Going Bald”, and “Lakeside Park”, and a second, shorter epic, “The Necromancer”. The album had no singles, and none of the shorter songs made onto the radio. The album’s sales and subsequent tour went so badly that the band nicknamed it the “Down The Tubes Tour”. Their label, Mercury Records, was even considering dropping them entirely, until the bands manager came forward, stating that the band would put out more “radio-friendly” and “mainstream” material. He lied. The group had already started on “2112”, and didn’t reveal anything about the album until it was ready to be released. Needless to say, Mercury was not pleased. However, 2112’s popularity soared and the tour went extremely well. After that, Mercury came forward, and basically said, “Well, you lied to us, but the album was a hit anyway. The critics hate you, but your sales are through the roof. You’re all crazy, but.......screw it, do whatever the hell you want, and have fun kids!” And onwards the saga went.....
I've always had a soft spot for this song, even though it's a bit disjoint and raw. But Rush's experimentation, ambition, and drive to do things their own way was always to their credit. I have a question about Patreon requests: You say tracks should be under 7 minutes long ... but many worthwhile tracks are longer than that. So, could an 8-14 minute track count as 2 requests? Thanks for answering, and thanks for your eclectic and appreciative listens!
Yes, tracks that are longer will count as 2 requests. We are enjoying reacting to the requests. We try and give our detailed input on what we've listened to so as to make it an enriching experience for all who drop by.
I don't know... Red Lenses, Dog Years, Tears... they have a few contenders for "terrible songs", out there. Let's not overlook the eardrum-rupturing release of the original Vapor Trails album either. Still better than any band out there, but they've still stumbled along the way ;)
You may have noticed that I didn't tackle the ending lyrics. I'm still pondering this but I suspect it's something like until you 'get it right, this mortal life thing...until you are focused on love and make it your highest focus, you will have to go back and start over, in another human life, to give it another go. Or something similar to that... What do you think? One more observation;. I think Geddy Lee done a masterful job on vocals in this song making his voice accurately express emotions. A great example that I particularly enjoy is in the part that is about hitting the cask of 43, on the chorus lines, the words 'crimson' and 'hazy, check out the texture he so pleasantly uses. If anything about this amazing trio is underrated, it's the vocals. And the bass guitar, and the lead guitar... Pardon me, this happened everytime I ponder the question. Love your channel. Love your reactions.🏅
Regarding “Didacts and Narpets”, it has been noticed that “narpets” is an anagram for “parents”, so the title could thought of as “Teachers and Parents”, which would be that phase of the character’s life.
Yeah. Never got the lyrics until seeing this reaction, must be 40 years or more now. Wow. Also the Teachers and Parents deal is an epiphany (as well as 'addicts'). Wonderful stuff.
I could never understand how some people claim Alex was musically inferior to Neil and Geddy. On this album, Alex's solos and passages are phenomenally good! To me, he was musically ahead of Neil and Geddy at this point in their career. Obviously, they were all great!
can you react to Porcupine Tree? Another great prog rock band. Anesthetize (live) would be a great introduction for you guys. It’s on RUclips. If you are loving Rush, you will most likely take to Porcupine Tree. Rush and Porcupine Tree are my two favorite bands of all time.
You know what, I've never heard of Porcupine Tree. Since you like them and say they're similar to Rush then we will surely add them to our list to react to in the near future.
Don't think the music world was quite ready for this so it remains quite under-rated. Don't believe it deserved the 'down the tubes' tag. In places it's really good with a little pretentious whiff.
Didacts & Narpets is an anagram of Addicts & Parents, if you go back and revisit that act of the song, the Hero is arguing with them. Dig a little deeper and you'll find that didact means teacher and narpet means student.
You're half right. However, Didacts isn't an anagram and Narpets isn't a real word. Also, the Hero never argues, they just yell commands at him the whole time. The drums are what speak for what he's feeling inside.
Love your interpretation of this song. This album almost killed their music career. They Came into their own with their next album '2112'. For something different try "Cinderella Man" :-)
2112 is a graphic comic book, an awesome one, TFoL is an epic novel. In other words, one is a specific story and this your listening to now is a more general telling of the universal journey and it's particular touchstones we all go through on each our separate and connected journey up the mountian. 2112 is more accessible more entertaining right from the start, but TFoL grows on you with each listen (not to say that 2112 doesn't) it's just a more all encompassing suite of songs, imo.
Before I even watch your review, I'm going to guess you may not like this one as much as you have some others. This is early, ambitious, and a little pretentious in places. But there are some great musical passages in this song. But I was wrong, you seemed to enjoy it more than I expected.
It seems the mountains and fountain in the first part represent the mother's breasts, and the fount of nourishing milk. The ultimate mountains and fountain represent the climb toward, and then ultimate realization of self-enlightenment. The song also suggests a belief in reincarnation.
as you stated, this is one of those pieces that is so ambiguous that a hundred listeners can come up with a hundred different interpretations. you would probably enjoy led zeppelin's 'stairway to heaven' for the same reason -- the lyrics are ambiguous and open to many interpretations.
Another example of the young Rush overreaching maybe less successfully in the short term but over time it has grown on a lot of fans, not in my top 20 but I would play it from time to time to remind me what early Rush sounded like
The record company didn't understand this album and gave the band a hard time over it. The record company only understands pop hits and money. Alex played it for Paul Stanley of Kiss and Paul Stanley didn't get it either. Of course Kiss were the sweet hearts of the music industry and typically wrote short simplistic pop songs.
the record company wanted something like Fly By Night from Rush but they began to experiment in the progressive and created Caress of Steel. The record company was upset at this and someone coined the joke "I ordered fish and you brought me a steak". However, without Caress we wouldn't have 2112
We've just signed up on Patreon a few days ago and posted a few membership tieres about a day ago. We are pretty new to this sort of thing. Big Rush fan here, and I have to say it's one of my least-liked pieces from them. It flirts with being great, but needs polishing. It was experimental, like some of the pieces preceding it, but they were still learning and it shows. It doesn't quite form itself into a smooth coherent whole. There's a world of difference between that and "2112". 2112 flows smoothly and seamlessly from beginning to end, and it always keeps you engaged and interested. You have to listen to 2112! It's passion and energy formed into sound! It's not just one of Rush's best pieces, it's a masterpiece that will be listened to for as long as people listen to rock music.
I disagree, yet it might be that I listened to 2112 way too many times; like 2113 times. The lyrical content of either cannot be denied and they both just rock it! Rush lost something with me beginning with the Power Windows album/cd onward in my opinion.
@@whocares6901 Some of my favorite things came in their later years. Vapor Trails is one of my favorite albums from them. Everything on that is great! Every. Single. Song! Clockwork Angels is filled with gems (Headlong Flight is awesome, as is BU2B, Clockwork Angels, 7 Cities, The Garden.... so many good songs). Counterparts is really good, as is Test for Echo. Power Windows has phenomenal songs, and so does Hold Your Fire. Caress of Steel is.... well, they really tried, bless their soul. Even Geddy looks back at it and says "We must have been really high when we wrote that.
Going back to the depths of Rush's history, eh? I will warn you though... AVOID THEIR SELF-TITLED DEBUT album! Neil didn't join the band until their second album, so their first is just generic, hard rock without the complexity, lyrics or atmosphere that Neil added to the band's music. So their first album is missing 33% of the band :)
That's sad to hear they were missing 33% of the band. It would be interesting to listen to their maiden album just to get an idea of what they created without the legendary drumming and songwriting skills of Neil. Thanks for this info.
@@gelsol to each, his own. I prefer the complex time signatures, intricate precussion (not just drums), and meaningful lyrics Neil brought with him. With Rutsey, they were just another AC/DC and Kiss.

Im very impressed that you chose to do this song. 👍 Nice review!
I was a young man at 13 when I was given this album. Its in my top 5 as Rush Albums over 40 years. Its Genius.
Rush plays music about life it's a moving force and motivation
this album almost cost them them their career but the next album 2112 gave them the independence to create as they saw fit.
Forgetting about the music for a second, you two are a beautiful couple.
Absolutely
Wow. Kudos to you both for taking this on
great reaction to a great track in one of my favorite Rush albums :)
"Give me back my wonder,

this and the necromancer are two of my fav by rush
Wow, deep into the vaults. :D This wasn't popular when it came out but it has grown on me throughout the years.
Mike Finney it’s not cohesive, yet I like each individual song.
"By-Tor and The Snow Dog" is Rush's first concept piece, on the former album, Fly By Night.

It's fascinating to learn about Rush's history. They came back strongly after this album's failure. Thanks for sharing this trivia.
Zacharia Kaye lol, they got no interference after that!

CARESS OF STEEL....SIMPLY MAGIC !!
Thank you for all these great Rush reactions. Can you do `Closer to the Heart` and `Spirit of the Radio`
Bacchus was the Roman god of wine (along with fertility and agriculture), so your observation about “drunkenness” is spot-on.
No thumbs down--and fittingly so! Well done!
Very nice , I like the way you two read between the lines.
"Caress of Steel" Rush's 3rd album, came out in 1975, when Rush was in their early 20's...

Great album it just wasn't radio-friendly at the time so the record company was just about ready to pull the plug
It's pronounced "Bakkus Plateau". Bacchus was the God of Wine. Also known as Dionysis in Greek Mythology.
They called it done the tubes tour, but they refused to cave in to the record label and created 2112. The rest is history.
Please give a review of the album by Nektar. The album is called Remember the Future. Also the name of the song. Thank you.
Part three, the music reminds me of the game Diablo, the first one

Big Rush fan here, and I have to say it's one of my least-liked pieces from them. It flirts with being great, but needs polishing. It was experimental, like some of the pieces preceding it, but they were still learning and it shows. It doesn't quite form itself into a smooth coherent whole. There's a world of difference between that and "2112". 2112 flows smoothly and seamlessly from beginning to end, and it always keeps you engaged and interested. You have to listen to 2112! It's passion and energy formed into sound! It's not just one of Rush's best pieces, it's a masterpiece that will be listened to for as long as people listen to rock music.
well said
this is one of their greatest imo
It's missing that spark that makes a Rush song great. It's a good song but not a great one. Well said Robert .
That's crazy talk, the debut album RULES. Rutsey is perfectly competent, and they lay out some great funky hard jams! Working Man put them on the map.
@@gelsol to each, his own. I prefer the complex time signatures, intricate precussion (not just drums), and meaningful lyrics Neil brought with him. With Rutsey, they were just another AC/DC and Kiss.
Surfeit I like the first album. Yeah it’s generic but it’s still good. To me it seemed to draw from Led Zep, Deep Purple and Ten Years After.
That album rocks & grooves like crazy. It's just different than the rest of their stuff. Still good. I love the production
