    The first Etude anticipates the sonorities of some of Ligeti's Etudes! Really remarkable.

    Brilliant composition. When you keep in mind this is from 1926 it's even more impressive. It still sounds so modern today

    These pieces really are superb. They sound like some Alban Berg, blended with the luminescent piano music of Georges Enesco, all with foundation of Schulhoff's jazz "style" (for want of a more precise word)(if one can discern a "style" across his oeuvre (not certain)). Thanks for posting this. 👌

      Agree. Sounds like a fusion of jazz rhythm with impressionistic harmonies (especially the second sounds like some of Debussy's preludes from 2nd book), sometimes polytonality. Excellent stuff!

    Wow, he predicts Kapustin with this! Especially at the measures at 1:46. Or let's say, he inspired him. 9:29 is similar to the beginning of Kapustin's Sonata No. 2, and 11:30 to the last measures of the finale!

    Unter Etüden versteht man im Allgemeinen ja Übungsstücke. Ich weiß nicht, welchen Nutzen praktische Unterhaltungsmusiker der damaligen Zeit aus diesen polytonalen Ausarbeitungen hätten ziehen sollen. Erwin Schulhoff war halt eher ein Kind der Wiener Schule, als des Jazz...
