I built the Elmyra 2 few weeks back, but I somehow messed up a couple of SMT components. Martin over at Neutral Labs was very helpful as I traced the problems down. And I finally got it working. All's well that ends well. And now I'm saturated in four channels of squonky ouchy bliss!
Great build! If I ever need any help with production, I'll reach out to you. ;) As for the preset cards having no effect, they work in conjunction with the OUCH circuit. There's a section in the manual about it: "Preset cards and components used in the slots on the front panel exhibit an effect in combination with the BITE and CHOKE controls, and the effect they impose on the sound is dependent on the source audio. Play different types of sound and/or set BITE to maximum and CHOKE to middle position and you should hear noticeable changes in sound by swapping preset cards."
Loved building mine a couple of weeks ago. It is a really great little synth, and capable of a lot more that the distorted drone noises you’d expect. I’ve a lot to discover and it seems we have several firmware changes to come. Martin is a really helpful chap. I had an issue (I thought) with mine only ever triggering full tilt on the touchpads. Turns out the usb mains adapter I was using (an old iPhone one) was causing the issue. Switched that and happy days.
@@MoltenMusicTech Oh yes. You should have to press both plates to get a sound, and a light touch (usually to the side) can greatly reduce the volume and envelope of the note. Definitely try a different power supply. I was told that the problem is common when attached to a computer (or something heavily computerised like my iPhone charger).
@@MoltenMusicTech Yeah. I see why they didn’t, what with their environmental concerns (as the rest is made from local components, bio plastic and local hardwoods).
First of all, thank you very much for this great video on how to setup this synth DIY, with it I managed as a complete soldering newie to build it up....but while turning it on, only the pads seem to work properly when touched in orange, but no sound is coming out while on the left side one LED is flashing continiously after a while... I have been in contact with Martin from Neutral Labs for quite while sending him pictures from the PSB etc. Hi checked and said it seemed ok so far and ask me to re-install firmware to solve the problem. I did ( it only worked through windows though btw.) as instructed in the manual....but no change after turning it on again... by chance I left the micro usb in and change the jumper from upload back to operation, now the leds seem to operate in a normal way and work when you push the related button...also the LEDs seem to flashing on the frequence of the related knob...so somehow the related components seem to be soldered correctly but this only is for the LEDs on the sides...pads are not operating etc. when micro-usb powered... I f have just gone back the Neutral to ask if they can check my unit directly as I have no further clue where to search...quite frustrating if you have finished a synth yourself and not a single noise or sound comes out of it yet... Any advise what could cause this is much appreciated...
The DIY dilema is that you might spend hours building something and then it doesn't work. There's very little you can do except go through the soldering again, recheck every joint, take out and re-place the chips etc. It's a weird box and I have no idea if mine's working correctly.
Hello Robin, I am a devoted watcher of your channel, thanks for the wonderful content! If I may ask an off-topic question... what camera and lens are you using?
Thanks! The main camera is a Lumix GH5 with regular Leica lens that you buy it with - a 12-60 is it? I'm not a camera expert but it's revolutionised my video game. The overhead is a Sony Handycam (AX53?) which seems to be perfectly adequate although I'd love to have two GH5s... although it's a chunky camera and would probably get in the way. I sometimes use a Canon EOS70D which was the first proper camera i bought but i didnt realise it has a 30 minute video restriction - nothing is more frustrating than realising your camera stopped filming 5 minutes ago. However, I have a great 50mm short lens for it that just looks stunning as an alternative angle when shooting jams and it also takes better stills than the Lumix. But I've worked out how to set up the GH5 to take decent video and that's made all the difference.
Sorry to hear that you don't like it. If you have any specific feedback, I'd be happy to hear it. Always open for recommendations. In fact, there's already a long wish list by users (and myself) for future updates.
I think I need to be tested. I just spent an hour watching something I have no intention of repeating. Hey ho, it's all fun!
Very tempting. It would go great with my bit ranger.👽

That’s interesting, I thought that the touchplates seemed to be full on/off without anything in between - maybe I’ll try another source of power.

Not including the power supply could be a bit of a flaw then

You are so fun to listen too
Definitely my next build

good job Rob ! tbh for the money i m not blown away. i can deeply recommend eowave quadrantid swarm synth. that is mental….
It’s not really my thing so I struggle a bit with how best to demo it. It’s definitely fun once you’re in the zone.
@MoltenMusicTech yeah, i can imagine. Than again, i never wanted Lyra, before i heard and saw one ;P

It sounds kind of 8-bitey. Lots of aliasing?
It's a noise machine so.... who can tell?
