Erika's Story - Congestive Heart Failure at 29

  • Erika was just 29 years-old when she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Nearly a year after the birth of her first child, she began to experience shortness of breath along with other concerning symptoms. As her health began to deteriorate, she was immediately referred to Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, where she was treated by interventional cardiologist Manu Pillai, M.D. and cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, Naveed Saqib, M.D., along with a comprehensive team of nurses and affiliated physicians. While in the hospital, the intensive care unit nurses organized her son's 1st birthday party, so the young mother would not miss the once-in-a-lifetime moment. Erika is now back with her family and on her road to recovery. Physicians continue to monitor her closely, and thanks to an advanced technology called the "Life Vest", she will receive a lifesaving shock should her heart ever stop unexpectedly.

I am 20 years old and recently diagnosed with CHF , Back in February (3 mo back) I caught pneumonia and went into a coma this was definitely life changing , I was so scared but my nurses comforted me through it all I am so thankful to have had their support considering I was flown to another state away so had no family with me , This story hits home an made me super emotional , I have a 2 year old son but while being in the hospital I never really though about what was going on outside those walls (I knew my son was taken care of ) all I could think of was how they have family’s at home but they were there saving life’s💕

@Angel Dennis I was diagnosed last year in June. I've come a long way since then. I take my meds and workout. I changed up my eating habits. But from time to time, I may fall off. But I feel my best when I eat right, workout and take my meds. I feel like I used to when I take care of myself. I don't have swelling much at all. I'm not winded or tired when I do things. I just PRAY, TAKE MY MEDS, EAT RIGHT(MORE TIMES THAN NOT) & WORKOUT. I'm trying to get my weight down. Since my diagnosis, I've lost over 70lbs and it's so much better on your heart when you start to lose the weight. It's less work it has to do. I'm just grateful to GOD for how far he's brought me honestly. I thank him for a wonderful
      Cardiologist as well.

An echocardiogram and blood work will definitely show any problems with your heart so if you had those tests done then you should be fine. I was diagnosed with heart failure 12/31/24. Generally speaking, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction ("diastolic HF") is harder to both diagnose and treat compared to HF with reduced ejection fraction. This is because it usually is a problem of stiff walls, eg secondary to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or LV hypertrophy or even restrictive cardiomyopathy.

Yeah cause its rare. You dont find doctors that really care that much about you. They got to much on their plate for one person. Lol. Js.

I don't think you can get rid of it unless it takotsubo cardiomyopathy. That's goes away. Any other heart failure conditions doesn't. Can be treated and slowed down but not cured. Only a heart transplant can cure that.

@@hotlatino7220 a heart transplant might cure the failure but it def adds other problems in your life. Including a cocktail of anti rejection meds. For the most part, all you can hope for is to go into remission, but it will eventually get worst again. It's like cancer, but chronic, and many can live a healthy life if its managed properly. Eventually it will keal. (As Doug would say)

chf doesn't go away when you're diagnosed with it you would probably need treatment for the rest of your life its got the same prognosis as cancer you seem to be acting like it's over

I thought having this disease was as a result of my old age, while I was diagnosed of heart disease Dec. 19 2020, I used series of medication but I was still having the severe pain, until I used an herbal mixture from Dr. Gbenga which I saw on RUclips and I was completely cured, I appreciate Dr. Gbenga for his help
