Rose's portrayal of Kessler is the most convincing! He comes across as a cold, calculating Party Member with an efficiency that is totally devoid of mercy, compassion, or other weakness of the plutocratic mindset! I am sure that many RAF vets of WW2 when they first saw this drama when it was first aired in the late '70s if they had the misfortune to be downed no doubt may have come across such types as Kessler; not a pleasant one by far!!!
A quite remarkable performance from Clifford Rose. Of all the Brits who have played Nazis down the years, he was the only one who really nailed the look and the voice. He nailed Kessler like Gordon Jackson nailed Hudson in the old series of Upstairs Downstairs.
Not the most well known of actors, but Clifford Rose was fantastic as Kessler and played him not as some blood thirsty sadist, but as a calculating, intelligent man who knew how to work people. Obviously it is revealed in the series he is an ardent follower of Hitler with no feelings about his victims, but to him, it is his role in life to carry out Hitler's orders. Also Kessler is shown to have feelings when he has a Belgian mistress in the last series and does everything he can to save her.
..SS Sturmbannfuhrer, the equivalent of Major, seems to be an inappropriate rank for a person holding as much authority as he does. Hopefully the technical advisors to this series managed to do their homework.
One of the very finest performances in British TV history by Clifford Rose as Kessler.
Spellbinding.
Breathtaking acting, notice the total lack of incidental music. People had a attention span then. Superb!
Don't make em like this anymore sadly
Ah! The days when one could hear every word said without straining one's ears!

Agree wholeheartedly about Clifford, I would like to add one other though - Donald Pleasence as Heinrich Himmler
Clifford Rose played Kessler as a three dimensional character, not completely evil which made it seem all the more real.A fine actor
One of the best episodes of Secret Army
I'm watching the series again on Talking Pictures channel, here in the UK
During the "lockdown" I think the Talking Pictures channel has gained millions of viewers.
Me too.
Only one man could play the part of k e s s l e r Clifford Rose brilliant
He WAS Kessler.

Yes,but a Major in the Gestapo. That ranked very high in the Nazi way of things!
@@davidknowles3459 Indeed. Eichmann was only a lieutenant colonel.
The series technical consultant, Group Captain William Randle, escaped from occupied Europe in 1942.
Why were the Germans so kind to this traitor ???
He collaborated with the Nazis
