Luke, seeing that you seem to be very much into reading and history, I was wondering if you could make a more detailed video about the civil war (bringing this up since I listened to your video about Albion's seed). I have trouble believing much of what is being told about the war, and having been to Gettysburg to see the rebel actors with their valid points, I grew very curious to hear a point of view coming from somebody who has a deeper understanding of American history. Perhaps a connection with some of Charles Adams work would be interesting to see. Thanks!
I initially watched on PeerTube, but came here to comment because I don't have my own instance (yet). Unaboomer is probably the most dangerous person to RUclips and Google right now. Teaching people how to self-host their mail server and their video instances and how to become internet landlords. I mean, there have been others before him, but for some reason, Luke just has this charm that kinda makes you actually listen and start doing your own stuff. He is literally Uncle Ted of RUclips. I have been messing around yesterday with Matrix Synapse, but I need a mail server, so guess which video I'm going to go back to? (wink, wink, nugde, nugde) I messed with Synapse on a Raspberry Pi 2 (running Void), it's not hard. I am going to make a better PC dedicated to virtualization soon enough and start hosting my own stuff. I don't want to host everything on my main PC (albeit I'm running it 24/7 and on a UPS). Maybe in the future I'll dedicate an adequately-sized VM and storage to Luke to do his stuff, but only after I will make a HA Cluster (not hard either). But maybe until then, someone else would have already donated on-premise resources.
@@Jalae Have you even read my comment about self-hosting on hardware I own? You probably didn't finish the first paragraph before vigorously typing that comment.
@@Jalae In the US, it's not as affordable to self-host as in other parts of the world. Expensive internet plans, cost of electricity depending on the zone if you don't use efficient hardware, cost of the hardware itself... Unless you get those for free, or unless you value having those things in your own yard more than the additional money you spend, then that's the only alternative. And for a VPS it's less likely that their hardware will fail, because they organize redundant infrastructure (be it hardware or software). And it's cheaper to rent space in a VPS / VPC and at least not be entirely dependent on them. If they suck, you just transfer your VMs / setup to another one. But with gmail or facebook, there is only 1 provider of those services and if they decide to take you out, you're done. If the VPS Provider kicks you out, you move to another. I prefer having things under my control and my bandwidth usage isn't going to be that big, so I prefer self-hosting. In Luke's case with a few hundred to a few thousand people on his website, it matters more. Not to mention PeerTube, which, unless the users are doing WebTorrent seeding, it will either be very slow or very costly. Again, being an internet landlord means that you control your software and the access to it. In FAANG's case, you don't have any saying in how it works and if you can access them. The hardware doesn't matter, because the software can be moved anywhere else.
for peertube I suggest you look at scaleway pricing, you get a bandwidth cap at 3-500Mbps but there's no datacap, and they support block storage so you can just get more storage cheaply that way if you find that you need a lot of compute power, hetzner has cheap dedicated servers at just €40 / month (albeit without ECC) where you get 20TB datacap and 1Gbps. The only good american host I know of is BuyVM, though their kvm vps's are kinda weak, still uncapped data, and with probably the best block storage you can get it's great for video streaming, as long as you don't have to transcode it on the same machine. Hope that helps a bit
Have you considered using a CDN in-front of your content? That should reduce the bandwidth requirement and data transfer costs are usually much more affordable from the CDN.
I used Contabo as a VPS to host a minecraft server and was pretty happy for the price, plus it has unlimited bandwith, though I don't know if they'll limit it if you consume a lot of data at a time.
OVH has "unlimited" bandwidth. I asked support about it once and they told me that it's unlimited until it becomes a problem, then they'll contact you. But maybe look into a seedbox VPS. They're fairly cheap for the bandwidth and storage.
Just checked hetzner, their “cloud” servers are dirt cheap and offer 20 TB of traffic per month. Their dedicated servers start from about 40 euros per month and have unlimited bandwidth. They do only host from Germany and Finland.
In my opinion the biggest problem with PeerTube right now is lack of a general catalogue. That's where LBRY beats PeerTube - if you type stuff in a search box, you'll actually find it. I can't find my videos on PeerTube using web search. The only way I can watch them is by finding my Mastodon posts with them being linked (that's why I pinned a post with that link to my profile). I've never had an issue so I've never had to contact support, but I've heard that if you have a major issue with your server it's better to just nuke it and rent a new one. A step up would be SoYouStart, another company of OVH, more expensive but higher bandwidth (250-500), better hardware, and better support. Just looked it up as well, SoYouStart is actually running a decent sale right now for some of their servers, and those deal prices are set, as in that's the monthly cost until you cancel the plan. Then obviously you can go OVH for even better all around, up to 1 Gbps uplink.
