I've listened to the song over a thousand times in my life, but never realized the drums were what made it so unbelievably powerful. I'm an idiot and now a huge fan of Danny Carey. Tool is really the perfect package.
1 year before i was amazed only by fast doublekicks and blastbeats. Now i think i found the definition of good drumming watching this guy giving his soul on every Tool song.
apparently i am not allowed to have sex, well if so, still better than getting bombed (out), or have no arms or legs, or end up demented a F****ck :( ;) :)
It's not just the technique, it's the music theory of this section. It plays in the "negative space", opposite of what the rest of the song had been playing. It's fucking brilliant in composition. Technique-wise, his aggressive, hard-hitting playing is what we've come to expect from this drumming God.
You're one to something brotha! I always was at a loss of words when it came down to Danny's drumming.. But especially in this passage of the song - how his song bounces and plays in the subtractive realm of what the instruments and the vocals are doing... Its just really inspiring and awesome to see. I come back to this video all of the time to get inspired and fired up again!
I think what makes that part great is how well it fits inbetween all of the instruments and the vocals. Just awesome how it matches the integrity and sonic flow and direction of the song - the crash just elevates the finality of the song.... Just pure genius and awesomeness
Yeah, it kind of sucks when he plays it live because he has to play the drum part with one hand and the gong with the other, and you can hear the difference. The studio version is sickkkk tho...
And notice that guys that use gongs are pAisTe guys. Danny Carey, Carl Palmer, John Bonham, Alex Van Halen, even Neil Peart uses zildjian&Sabian cymbals, you see in photos that he used a pAisTe gong. They have No Equal. World class symphonic.
1:06! I always talk about this one little moment. He strikes the cymbal behind him with both hands. It may seem small but it's fucking epic. I've never seen another drummer do it. It's always the moment that makes me come back to this video.
He hits the one behind him with his left hand and the one infront of him with his right; strikes 2 of them at once it looks like to me. Still the best part other than the gong bit though, yes.
Every so often I come back to re-watch this video. I’ve probably viewed it 1,000 times. Just to confirm my conviction that Danny Carey and Tool are the best god damned heavy rock band that have ever and will ever be. Hands down.
He does hit quite hard, but Aquiles Priester and Marco Minnemann are almost certainly the hardest hitters. Also, Jukka, formerly of Nightwish, beats the shit out of his drums too.
That picking up the mallet for the gong is just amazzzzzing so he fills the beat up for the previous bars cuts the beat in half so he can pick the mallet striking the gong ontime nd hitting the downbeat while not missing a beat , no rushing no dragging just too good lol
One of the few heavy style drummers that doesn't just fall back on blast beats and fills. The technique is not to be fucked with. So much emotion and groove to his playing.
I have to be totally honest. I was never a big fan of double bass pedal metal drummers, a lot of them sound like they're doing the same 32nd style beats. That was until I heard Danny and although I have neuropathy and it's very hard for me to even try to play drums which is why I play guitar now. Everytime I watch his videos or listen to a tool song it makes me want to try an go back to drumming he's amazing he's phenomenal
I took my ex wife to see the Lateralus tour all those years ago. She lost a lot of hearing in her left ear. Thanks TOOL. I had this song in my head for about a year after. The timing changes are what makes it for me, like Neil Peart of course.
If there’s a better drummer alive I haven’t heard them yet. This dude is just unfairly talented. And as a matter of fact every member of that band is. You take any of the 4 members away then Tool isn’t Tool anymore. Can’t wait for the new album. Finally. My honest to God prediction is it’s gonna be their best album ever. Truly believe that.
I have been listening to Tool from their club days all the way till now and also a fan of APC and just realized that a big portion of this song is also the same in Judith that is fucking awesome 😉👍🏁
Danny once said in an interview that he hits harder than most drummers do. He attacks 'em hard. The drum shells that he uses allows him more volume the harder he hits. In some thinner shell kits it's quite the opposite. The harder you hit, the less tone and power you get. Rather, you just get a loud, dull "thud". I believe it now.
Thing i really love about this video is how the dryms are mic'd and processed. You got these guys out there that thing they need 15 mics for a 5 piece kit and 6 dbx 266xl gate conpressors, and these guys used 2 overhead mics and 2 kick mics and achieved the sound they did.
This is so inspiring to me. I tell ya I'd pay good money to see a Danny Carey solo concert. @the vid creator, thanks for doing this. I appreciate having the song track on it for reference, but it could be a mixed a little lower. ;)
The cymbals need a cigarette after that performance
haha!
It's cause he uses them sweet sounds paistes for a reason a carton of cigarettes after that orgy
Man you made my day! Ahaha
Brilliant 😂😂👌
Haha. Yes. Even the shells of this kit are made from bronze cymbals. Wouldn't wanna move that thing.
1:39 will forever me my favourite part. Thats insane to swap out a gong hit and continue the main beat as if nothing happened.
That gong hit was insane!
that one armed gong strike is bad ass
Yah I know right
and tastefull
Absolutely love that aggressive hit at 0:55
Dude his arm moves at the speed of light!!
The swing at 1:08 does it for me
Haha I rewatched that hit like 4 times. Caught me off guard at first
HUGE same

@@Banana_Split_Cream_Bunsyou forgot Led fucking Zeppelin
Honestly man, the drummer and bassist are what makes tool in my opinion. Danny is the engine of the band
sandro Lopez and justin is the transmission
I know what you mean! It took me years to realize that Tool is essentially a bass+drums band.
Majestuoso
I hope that kit was 18.
It definitely got smashed
...It said it was 18
me toooooo
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
If it wasn’t, it is now.
1 year before i was amazed only by fast doublekicks and blastbeats. Now i think i found the definition of good drumming watching this guy giving his soul on every Tool song.
If you want to see really good drumming then, check out Virgil Donati, Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl.
apparently i am not allowed to have sex, well if so, still better than getting bombed (out), or have no arms or legs, or end up demented a F****ck :( ;) :)
Agreed. These guys have captured lighting in a bottle. I'd wait another decade for a new album without a single complaint lol.
Same...
@@wickedpissadeyou are almost halfway through, only 6y to go :D
that gong hit is unbelievable, i must have replayed it 100 times by now
Every year, I will play this video. To remind myself that God does exist.
@@Banana_Split_Cream_Buns there are a lot of gods

Yes! Lets! How awesome!
Wow. How did I not see that the first time I seen this??
That was actually a very impressive use of the gong WOW

this guy is so great! yet so humble! he will remain an ICON for years to come!
The rug really ties the room together.
(can't wait for Aug 30th)
Just needs a couple of cushions in the corner
Yeah, well, that's just your opinion man :) I appreciate your taste. Tool and the Big Lebowski - can you get better than that?
i have come back to this clip on YT about 30 times over the last 8 years or so. gets better everytime.
A drum kit fit 4the LEGEND Danny has become. His skills are mystical separating himself from a guy into a breathing legend
He is my favorite percussionist to date!!! worth every penny to see/hear just him in concert! WOW!

Just met him earlier today. Really great and nice guy!
Can we take the time to appreciate how hard he hits at 0:54?
That poor bass and crash
Chalklett Kayke dude you cant even see his arm move its so damn fast!!!!
He hit that crash like you'd hit someone that just kicked your dog
I think that without a drummer like Dany Carey nobody would be able to compose a song of this level.
I never get tired of watching this
Danny Carey is a god.
danny and jimmy chamberlin are the best drummers from the 90s era absolute monsters
Dave Abbruzzese
grohl too
oh and Tim Alexander
Danny Carey and Brann Dailor.
Portnoy too
I swear Danny has to be the hardest hitting drummer in rock history
He does hit quite hard, but Aquiles Priester and Marco Minnemann are almost certainly the hardest hitters. Also, Jukka, formerly of Nightwish, beats the shit out of his drums too.
THEE BEST hands down❣️
THE consequential band of the last 30 years. THE engine of consequence.
This dude and Jimmy Chamberlin always blow my mind.
Yep. My 2 favourite drummers of all time aswell.
Throw Josh Freese into that mix and you have my top three.
Add a tablespoon of Matt Cameron and imo you got the top 3 homies in modern drumming.
Im not a drummer but to me this is a song built from drums what a jewel
That picking up the mallet for the gong is just amazzzzzing so he fills the beat up for the previous bars cuts the beat in half so he can pick the mallet striking the gong ontime nd hitting the downbeat while not missing a beat , no rushing no dragging just too good lol

I just peed a little
Notice, no single stroke fills, all RR/LL... sounds like a machine gun
There were quite a few single stroke rolls in there sir, but it doesn’t matter. Incredible
its stored in the balls
Not me . i only SHIT MYSELF
behold an underrated drummer
I know. Best of the 90s if you ask me. Only one I can think that's even close is Travis Barker but they're two different styles of drumming
Only Travis Barker? What about Dave Grohl?!
Paweł Dąbrowski Dave Grohl is nowhere even close to Danny's level on drums. He's good, don't get me wrong, but he's no Danny.
I can think in other drummers like JImmy Chamberlin, Danny peters, Dale Crover but Dave Grohl? Travis? those are overrated....
Alex Guerra I totally agree. What I meant is that Dave is closer than Travis.
Always loved this video. Killer drummer.
Danny Carey, drummer of the year (every year,,, forever).
One of the top 5 contemporary drummers.
Face to so much, Love you Danny

That double cymbal crash at 0:56 ... you basically feel afraid for the cymbals - as much for the possibility of them toppling over as getting cracked.
Such a sick looking drum kit
