    Thanks for the video, I have a similar submersible pump for getting water out of our old brick well!

      No problem. The pumps are perfect for decanting and will easily make 1:1 just recirculating the mixture in the tank

    Yes feeding is a lot of work but you've made it look easy when your demonstration of how you do it we usually get our sugar from bookers they usually have an offer on finished at the moment sugars back to £16 bag it was £13. If you are a beekeeper and a member of club you can use bookers. Went to the heather yesterday chucking it down with rain but supers all full but if it continues to rain for next 3 weeks they will eat it.

      Yes Bookers have good offers on throughout the year. Im slightly worried about my bees at the heather. Lightening start but now lots of rainy days. Hope they dont eat it all. Next week looks cold as well! :(

    How does it work with the valve and he pump ? does the pump automatically stop when you close the valve or it does not matter ?

    Haven't read any of the comments below, but have you considered adding hive alive to your syrup. Even though i'm only a hobby beekeeper, i added hive alive to syrup fed this year and it made a huge difference to bee health and hive population.

    Definitely worth using a motorised mixer of some descritpion no matter how much you are doing. I add thymol, Vitamin C, and Citric acid to mine too...just to be posh ;)
    This might be the first year I need to mix a really large amount

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  4 года назад

      Yes. Motorising is so much easier than messing around with spoons and/or heating. Thats sounds a like a very posh mix :)

    • @TalRohan
      @TalRohan 4 года назад +1

      @@BlackMountainHoney Evidently there is a lot of Vitamin C in Nectar so adding some helps with winter longevity and the Citric acid converts a certain amount of the sucrose to glucose which helps stop it crystallising when the bees dry it off ... (ionic inversion not enzymatic)....I read some studies that gave good evidence for it working but I'm not certain for mine as yet since I don't have control hives to compare results.

    I use a plastic drum that size but I use a 1/2hp (anything smaller doesn’t mix 2:1) dirty water submersible in the bottom of the drum to mix. I have it plumbed with 1 1/4” PVC in a loop up through one bung, then a tap & valve to fill containers, then an 1 1/4 ball valve (diverts more pressure to fill containers), then back down the other bung to a 90° elbow at the bottom of the drum. I cut a big opening in the top to add the sugar & water leaving the bungs intact to support plumbing. Also used four 45°’s to make the turn (you lose a lot of pressure turning liquid directly 90°). I do get a tiny bit of undissolved sugar in the center but that’s due to a ridge in the drum bottom. The pump does get hot (120°F thermal switch) and shut off occasionally but at least I know the water is hot. There’s about 1 1/2 gallon of syrup the pump can’t recover that I have to dip out. Hard to explain & you can’t post pictures.

      Sounds like a great set up. I tried running heavy syrup through the submersible pump and it does work but it often blocks and gets really messy. I find the paddle method is pretty much foolproof. I need to get the decanting method a little bit more refined as it can be a bit messy. Im working on a ibc method with a 7hp trash pump using cold water so watch this space!

    Consider using a paddle type mixer on your machine as this will agitate your mix better and faster.
    Check out what is used in the food industry and weld up one yourself. Love the vids.

    Great video. Thanks. Is that an air source heat pump? I've been considering having it installed. Is it warm enough and how do you find the noise?

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  4 года назад

      I could talk ASHP for hours. Worthy of a video hey?! Maybe not. Its really good to be honest. At first it was SO loud, but turns out they hadnt taken the internal packaging from the compressor. Once they removed it, its very quiet indeed. This is Mitsubishis new ultra quiet model. We always have hot water on demand and the radiators are too hot to touch. Not to mention, we get back more in RHI than the cost of purchase and install over 7 years. Absolute no brainer for us. 10/10.

      @@BlackMountainHoney Yes I noticed the heat pump as well, been thinking of getting one but wasn't sure if it is worth the cost. Definitely worthy of a video! ........ I've been buying a trolley full of the 1kg bag from B&M at 56p each, I get some funny looks! Not quite up to the scale for a pallet yet/nowhere to store it but thanks for the info, will bookmark BAKO for the future.

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  4 года назад +1

      @@EN12345 For me it was certainly worth the cost. The renewable heat incentive covers the majority of the cost. We moved over from solid fuel and oil so the heat savings were huge. Not so much if you have mains gas. I keep my pallet of sugar outside but covered from the rain. I buy 1kg packs from Farmfoods throughout the season when i need top ups. 25kg make it so much quicker though. Bookers and Costco often have good deals on 25kg sacks without having to buy a pallet load

      Thanks for getting back. We're hopefully moving into a place with oil fired heating, so it definitely looks to be an option. Cheers.

    This is some serious feeding. I guess the weather and seasons are a bit more bee friendly here in Aus as rarely do this amount of feeding. I find it really interesting trying to get a handle on how you guys have to manage all this stuff with the weather you "enjoy" !
    Not sure what sort of sugar you use but for our cane sugar there is no way get better than 1:1. It's the max cooks get as well when making toffee for the kids. Lasts at least a few days in feeder, anything less and it ferments and the bees aren't happpy

    • @BlackMountainHoney
      @BlackMountainHoney  2 года назад

      2:1 is better for the winter as it gives the bees less work to store it in the frames. This 2 parts sugar to 1 part water. Ha! Definitely don't enjoy it. I HATE our climate. Soggy and tepid.
