Let’s be honest, more people watch college women’s basketball than the wnba.

You’re right. This is why the big stars have more earning potential in college. What can the WNBA do to increase viewership?

@@downtothewire513, they just broke the single season record for viewership, ticket sales, attendance and so on and so forth...so they must be doing something right.

WNBA players don't even prioritize their League.
While everyone in the USA is watching Pro AND college basketball during BASKETBALL season, WNBA players *insist* on playing their season during the summer months so that they won't conflict with European leagues for a more lucrative personal paycheck. So while basketball is in front of every TV in college, the pros, even in Europe, the WNBA is nowhere around to take advantage of that.
And if the WNBA ever did propose moving their league play to a normal Fall-Winter schedule so that there'd be increased exposure and relevance, it's the WNBA players themselves who would fight that proposal vehemently.
Thus, why should viewers of sports prioritize the WNBA when their own players won't?

Great viewpoint and well said. The players could very well be the main reason for the continued mediocrity of the league. They are also very against doing away with the age restriction. I think that would bring a much needed spark of creativity to the league.

I think it has more to do with the NBA/WNBA not wanting the 2 leagues conflicting with one another (or really, they don't want the WNBA to get crushed by the NBA). I don't think the players necessarily pushed for it, but they do kinda benenfit because it means they can play overseas as well.

@@LCsaint22 , that would have been a fair position for WNBA players to take.
But, there are newspaper articles where the WNBA players acknowledge that they were the ones who wanted a summer schedule so that they could play overseas when the European & other leagues play.
The bosses of the WNBA put in a "prioritization" rule in the 2020 CBA that says if they miss the start of training camp, they will be fined. If they miss the start of the regular season, they will be suspended for the year.
In 2024, the restrictions get tougher: if players don't report to the start of training camp, they will be suspended for the whole season.
You can Google "marquee sports network wnba prioritization" for some player quotes voicing that they don't like this rule. It is intended to stop more players doing like Diana Taurasi, who chose to miss/deprioritize the entire 2015 WNBA season because of the better money she could earn playing in Europe.
Whether or not the NBA thinks that the WNBA will get clobbered with dismal TV ratings & attendance numbers by playing during basketball season (everyone knows they will), it is the players in the WNBA who prefer to keep things just as they are.
The WNBA is not their primary employer, it's just a summer job...which is a direct quote from Candace Parker herself.

@@downtothewire513, yep. Google "marquee sports network wnba prioritization" for clear evidence that WNBA players consider their League to be a lower priority.
Diana Taurusi missed the entire 2015 WNBA season to play overseas...that's hardly credibility for her if she ever started telling people to come watch the WNBA.

@@AfroDeesiac from their perspective, I can see why that makes sense. If the money isn't there then why would they prioritize the WNBA? At the end of the day, its a business decision. I've never prioritized staying with an employeer "just because" or because of loyalty. If I can do the same job somewhere else, where they meet all my criteria for feeling fufilled in my role/career, AND they pay more money, why would I stay? Out of loyalty? Nope. I'm gonna go where I'm happy, and paid.
