    That's really interesting about not needing to shred cardboard. I recently had really thick cardboard that wouldn't go through my shredder. I ended up putting on top of my direct compost trench outside that I started. I'll put thick cardboard in my bins in the future.

    I ran a 10 gallon bin for a year with white paper only. The worms survived and thrived just as well as all my other bins. Worms don't seem to care what you give them, as long as it is something that is bio degradable, they have enough oxygen, and enough moisture.

    For the no grit bin it could be done side by side with a grit bin so your bedding but without grit and one with your normal bedding
    And the same weight of worms see which does better for weight of worms after 6 months obviously with smaller bins

  • @marlenen6130
    @marlenen6130 3 года назад

    I totally get what you mean by enjoying the busy work! I checked in on all my bins today, although I fed them food a few days ago. I fluffed up the hungry bin and the middle where I fed was warm, so I spread it around. The towels were dry too, so I put a little worm chow on top, covered with towels and wet it down. I have about 10 gallons of harvested castings in my wheelbarrow in my garage. I have a large spinach container in the middle where I’ve been dropping bigger material, cocoons, worms. I keep mixing it and since I have a little plastic covering part of it, lots and lots of baby worms have been emerging, so I’m not gonna sift it for a while. When it gets a little dryer, I’ll put it in my buckets with vent holes and let them finish the castings since I’m not in need of them right now.
    I just ordered the vermibag lil mammoth and hoping to get some African Nightcrawlers. I think I’ll put the massive amount of blue worms in it too, since they like it warm too. That will help me get down to less active bins, but bigger bins. I’ll still keep trays of near finished compost around cuz I prefer to separate it down into 75% and 90% finished, and will sift the top too.
    Have you considered pulling out the dried up avocados and hard items and putting it through the blender to add to your dry worm chow? It would get those things out of your way a little faster, and I do think that the dry worm chow does help build their size up. I have have lots of ENC that are huge and fat and I try to keep them together so they breed up their size, verses mixing them with the smaller ENC, if I can help it.

    • @PlantObsessed
      @PlantObsessed  3 года назад +1

      I kind of like watching how.long the hard items take sort of naturally. I did have my titan project going to breed bigger ENC that was ended when the rat ate half of them. Now that I have the North East worms ENC maybe I can restart that

      @@PlantObsessed I just bought a vermibag lil mammoth from someone commenting on yours or AV’s channel and waiting for delivery, so my plan is to get some African Nightcrawlers from Northeast worms! I can’t wait, and I plan on keeping that in the garage, so I can pop out anytime I want to play in it, lol. Whenever I get stressed, I go to my worm shed to decompress. Folding laundry settles me down late at night too. I’m embracing patterns of my behavior and understanding I don’t have to change everything, I just need to be mindful of what they are and why-and can use them to my advantage. I can’t always avoid stresses, but I can deal with it in a positive healthy way.

    The lasagna bin is fascinating. Two questions: 1) I note that it is rather dry. Do you not add moisture at all? (other than from the spoiled melon) 2) Would soaking it like you do your shredded cardboard with the molasses, etc. to begin the breaking down process not be a good idea?
    I'm thinking seriously about trying this as I don't have a shredder that will shred cardboard, nor is purchasing one a viable option at the moment. Cutting it up with scissors is tiresome, and I've noted shredded paper has not been working well in the bin I tried it.

    • @PlantObsessed
