Seems to me that if you have buckets that size you'd want them to be spread out more. Especially in rdwc! Those trees will grow absolutely huge. I don't really see the need for buckets larger than 20 liters on that amount of space.
I was getting better results with Hydro during the winter months, but it is far too hot here in the summer time. Temperature management wasn't practice. So I went back to organic.
Are you switching back during the winter? Or did you stay soil. I'm soil now. It's easy and I'm ready to take a stab at this. Just have the same hot water and no chiller issue you do.
@@Jackpunx69 yeah, I have a mother I take clones from, and since it is legal here I grow outdoors in the summer and do the hydroponics in winter months. Works out great. I can generally get two 3 month cycles in during the winter before it gets too warm for growing in the tent.
@@Playingwith3D thanks for the reply. Lots of information.. I live in so cal. And my room is upstairs.. so I'm fighting co2 and heat. I've been able to stay in the low 80s in the tent.. they are pretty happy. I know I'll be disappointed if I try to run hydro or dwc and I rot the roots. I guess I'll wait .. Thanks again
@@Jackpunx69 I have had root rot problems before, and I've managed to save the plant every time. I change out the rez, clean it with bleach, tear all the brown roots off, right up to the cup. New nutes and cool clean water in the rez, it will stunt its growth for about 2 weeks but its better than losing an otherwise healthy girl.
when the roots have grown and blocked some of the pipe the water flow will find the least resistance and you may have flow just on one side..it would be better to have a tee on the pump and feed direct into the first 2 pots and you will then have an even flow
Hydro goes almost three times faster than soil make sure you keep the water between 65 and 68°, I use pH perfect micro grow and Bloom last all week separate buckets so you can clean it out each week don't be lazy
I think your soil pots are too narrow and deep as roots like to also spread. This is not a problem with hydro. Also your hydro setup has more wattage so the comparison isn't fair. Were you looking to do a fair comparrison?
He should be ok with 18L pots for the test, the plants will still get to 3-4ft tall. I run my peppers in flood and drain cos they dont like permanently submerged feet ;) If you check the 2 varieties he`s growing the "Basket of Fire F1" only grows to a foot tall and the "Tokyo Hot F1" to 2ft. They will look lost in the 18Lpots let alone the 34L RDWC ;)
What is the Ppfd for both grow tents under each light I know one has six lights and one has four lights but if the ppfd is the same it doesn't matter. this is minus the fact that I believe the soil containers are too narrow
The tents look to be a similar size but I could be wrong. Hey Shane, what is the PPFD of both tents? If the PPFD is the same then the only thing I can think of is the smaller pot size for soil. Hydro plants under lights can grow to over 4ft high x 4 ft wide each if you let them. Small soil pots won't allow the same growth. But as long as PPFD is the same, it will at least be sort of fair minus the pot size for soil. I really want to know which is better from an unbiased comparison. I hear hydro doesn't taste as good though with peppers, tomatoes and such which I'm grwing now. I also heard pot doesn't smoke as good with hydro either. I'd rather have a smaller better plant than a bigger slightly not as good one.
I find hydro peppers taste just as good as those grown in soil. I grow toms outdoors with high pressure aero every season and they taste great. You`ll find toms grown in hydro or aero are far less susceptable to blight, which can be a real bonus in a blight risk area. I did a side by side one year and the soil toms were hit a full 10 weeks before the ones in aero showed the first sign. I`d recommend giving hydro a go, if only to do your own taste test ;)
The test is not for yield bust just to compare growing methods and processes. The RDWC fits nicely in a 5 x 5 and the PPFD avreage will be the same for both tents. I don't expect the plants to fill wither tent so it should be pretty even.
Hey, This system is recirculating which means the nutrients are cycled through the system, it's a more balanced way which eliminates nutrient settlement in the tank.
This couldnt have come at a better time! I'm growing soil 4x4 tent. I live in so California.. it's hot. I'm gun shy with out the chiller. In the hottest part of the day I'm low 80s. .. other then that. I'm dying to try it. There is am additive that is supposed to help with the warm water. Any thoughts on it? I'll be watching Thank you Mark
Soil vs hydro can't be compared ..soil tales 5 weeks in veg . Hydro 3 to fill a 3x3 area. Soil finishes with 400watts in a 3x3 and hydro needs 600 to finish due to its size and speed and rate of food / water transperations. Youd have to compare water amounts used/ time / watts / and npk amounts in grams used . This is no where near a comparison. It's just a side by side grow of 2 different ways to do it . Lol
If you can't get the water to stay cool and get an empty water bottle fill it up put it in the freezer and then throw it in the bucket get a water temperature gauge for a fish tank tied to a string and hang it in the bucket
MIGRO I think yours is the 34 litre bucket system you mentioned in another comment? They come in 50cm or 75cm pot centres just wondered which your is ? Also your migro 600 light what average temperature does it run at, I understand theirs variables to how hot it runs different environments etc, but when you were doing your soil vs hydro test what was the average temp in the 5x5 tent? Thanks.
The alien is a nice setup. My only opinion is that your air pump and electronics should be off the floor and higher than the system. In case of a power failure, the water won't siphon back into the air pump
why does alien not sel 30 liter round pots solo ? with a lid and net in one ? why the damn green netpots??? i dont Want root rot cause those things let light in a lot. and i dont want to clean a system like that, just 4 solo buckets of 30 liters pleas
Hi, yeah the Alien kit could squeeze into a 4x4 with the mixing tank outsid but we wanted a bit of room for filming around the setup. The test is not really about yield results and more about the positives and negatives of running each system (water management, costs etc).
Hello, for that size veg area a MIGRO 100 would be too much. A MIGRO 100 covers 3ft x 3ft for Veg. I would suggest a HLG 65Watt 4K board. Very nice little light, good price and perfect for that size.
I’ve been growing for more than 10 years; if you have a business in which you need to fulfill a certain weight, go hydro,, but if you want the best flavor, go soil or what is Called living soil which is full microbial filled media.
Can leave it for as long as your header tank lasts, depending on the stage your plants are at they will use varying amounts of water, that's for you to figure out how long you can leave it.
I went back to soil because Hydroponics was too much work and far too expensive as far as the bills go plus all the materials and supplies you have to have like pumps heaters coolers sprayers all kinds of stuff air stones. With the lights I get it around 2 to $300 a month with the Hydroponics it was six to seven hundred dollars. I'm also disabled so the work of Hydroponics was too much for me to because it just everyday you were had to be down there for an hour and a half or else it be too much, a jungle and you wouldn't be able to do anything and you get disease and all kinds of problems from there.
Hydro gives me a headache all those chemicals I never smoke that. I only grow organic it's a lot harder but it tastes so much better and the high is so much smoother. It's kind of like getting a regular cigar and having $100 cigar.
Soil is far more forgiving and thus on average has better taste for that reason. Although, all being equal hydro has the potential to taste better as you can directly add certain nutrients at certain times (potassium and phosphorus). The plant doesn’t distinguish between “organic” and “chemical” fertilizers. The organic fad with the fake science and anti “chemical” rhetoric needs to die. The main reason for organic is the ease of growing and far more forgiving process of growing. I do soil, soilless and hydro and soil is definitely the easiest and hydro is by far the most difficult to get dialed in. If you can have a beginning to end grow with zero problems in hydro, you will absolutely have a better yield and equal or better flavor. Although, that’s actually quite difficult to do.
Gamercatsz absolutley in veg especially id say i could have a clone ready 2 flower in about 2 or 3 weeks but in soil it would take same clone atleast 2 weeks longer for same structure now im not saying its not possible just from my personal experiences hydro is way faster and more vigorous but its prob worth the wait to have cleaner more tastefully buds in the end in soil
Dave is correct. "Organic" nutrients have to be broken down into the same exact base chemical compounds as synthetic nutrients, before the plant can even uptake them... So the "organic is better" talk is misinformation and frankly incorrect.

Hi shane looking forward to seeing this entire series, good job man!
Thanks, it's my first time running RDWC so I am along for the ride too!
Hi Shane, did you stick with this? Did you like it? Thanks?
Looking forward to this series

Ditch your fabric and go air ;)
Great vidéo, thanks you 🙏

can someone explain the pros and cons of this system vs a system that just uses 1 big tank with 4 holes in it?
Hey,
This system is recirculating which means the nutrients are cycled through the system, it's a more balanced way which eliminates nutrient settlement in the tank.

Why is everything black as it sucks the heat in ????

What’s the spacing between your pot centres on the rdwc alien system?
About 1m. The systen will squeeze into a 4x4

This one is 34L buckets.
Cant wait to see the basket of fire in a 34L bucket, they only grow to a foot tall ;)

Good point, they are just out on the floor so they are visible.

Dont forget to factor in the time spent checking, adjusting PH and EC, topping up and changing out the nutes. Drain to waste is a lot less work ;)
