Thanks so much for recommended A little luck. I love Claudia Piñeyro books and the way she describes Argentinian society. I’m from Buenos Aires, from the same neighbour as the main character. Also like you I live in the UK because I’m married with a Scotsman. The woman story was so moving, the way a tragedy can change a life completely. Thanks for not spoiling the argument but always making me feel an itch for reading. I read it in the original Spanish, who played with English words, hope the translation was good.
I had House of Doors as my top pick for the Booker, but then I read Prophet Song so now I'm in a dilemma. It was a terrific book and now I can't decide which is the more likely winner. I hope they are both short listed. As for Western Lane, I thought it was okay but not mind blowing. I'm on to book 8 of the longlist now, the Sebastian Barry.
My friend I have just received my copy of your book: 50 Books to Read if you are an armchair detective. What a delightful way to review some of my favorites!!! I hope lots of folks receive one as a Christmas or BDay present. No I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve for us next..... hummm, classics ??
I'm working my way through the Booker longlist; "Study for Obedience," "If I Survive You," and "Western Lane" are all coming up soon. I'm about halfway through "This Other Eden." Thank you as always, Eric.
I’m sorry you didn’t like The Discomfort of Evening. I thought it was so good and really stuck with me. Looking Forward to their next one. Some of my favorites this month were Someone Alice McDermott. The Summer Book Tove Jansson TR Thomas Teal. Optic Nerve Maria Gainza TR Thomas Bunstead. The Dust Never Settles Karina Lickorish Quinn ( Which I Hope more people discover) Strange Weather In Tokyo Hiromi Kawakami TRAllison Markin Powell
Hey Eric! Thank you for your reviews, I always enjoy them. For the Booker, in August, I have read Western Lane, If I Survive You, Pearl and Old God's Time. Your review of Western Lane was spot on to me, it's exactly how I found it. I am from Jamaica so I found it easy to relate to story line, but found in some sections the writing to be a little clumsy, almost as though someone else was writing sections.... I just started A spell of Good Things: A novel.... can't remember if you read that one already.... Cheers!
Great reading vlog. I have Western Lane on hold. I'm interested in reading If I Survive You. I did read If I Lie with You - it was an OK read, I wouldn't mind watching the movie, I hope I come across it.
Of the ones I've read so far The House of Doors is no. 1; the Other Eden no.2; If I survive you no.3 and am really enjoying A Spell of Good Things but haven't finished it yet. Maybe things will change when I've read them all.
Just watched another booktuber who completely trashed Western Lane- they call him the Angry Londoner. Prophet Song sounds like the best of your lot. Am currently reading Underworld which I'm really enjoying.
I’ve lots of books on the go through August but only finished 3. I Am Not Raymond Wallace Pachinko All The Little Bird Hearts ( excellent) I have about an hour left on The Bee Sting For September I’ve have plans for taking part in #shortyseptember & #straya New books for September Prophets Song The Wren, The Wren ( Ann Enright) So Late In The Day ( Claire Keegan) 🍀👋☘️📖📚📕☕️🇮🇪
The Booker longlist is so different this year. I am seeing such mixed reactions to it and having mixed reactions as well. I am hoping to read Study for Disobedience and Prophet Song this weekend. If I Survive You did not quite work for me, although I agree it’s opening section is strong. And Western Lane was fine but I did not find it noteworthy. Favorite August reads for me were Ann Patchett’s Tom Lake and Colson Whitehead’s Crook Manifesto. Both brilliant.

I haven't read any of the Booker long list so far but I am more interested in Pearl, how to build a boat and all the little bird hearts.
I am very interested in Ascension! I love good speculative fiction and am very curious when they manage to reach into the literary world
It’s so good!
Would love a second book from prophet song

Yeah it seems much more a mixed bag than most years.
