This song is Joseph's internal debate about whether or not he should marry her and stick by her side, as she just told him that she was pregnant with the Messiah. Now obviously he's a bit conflicted about this lmao, because she could easily be lying to him and it would stain his family's reputation if he were to get involved with her. Now in the Bible, an Angel came and told Joseph that what Mary was speaking (being a virgin but being pregnant) is the truth. I would love to have seen Gabriel come and talk to Joseph but also I think this is an amazing scene. Also in biblical times, Joseph had every right to stone Mary for being “unfaithful” but he didn’t want to do that so he was originally going to have her I guess shunned. Push her away from him.
