Not sure how else Marvin Orie could have interpreted that to be fair.... Then gets a yellow for it, harsh.
It’s ambiguous, but basically refs have different ways of indicating to the players something, so “ball is out” means the defending team can play it, “ball is available” means the attacking scrum half can play it, they do this to make sure they don’t try milk a penalty like defender not rolling or interfering with the ball in the ruck
@@stehanf Agree...the ambiguity doesn't help. It's not like he's clearly adressing either side in that call. Total lottery for defending team whether ball is out, counter ruck is on...etc
I can kind of see what you mean, but ‘ball is available’ is only a prompt for the 9 on attack to use it, it doesn’t mean the ball is out or free to play for the other team, and it was a very clear penalty.

He was telling Connacht the ball was available, not the Stormers. If he had said the ball was out, Stormers could have picked it up.

If you are late to the breakdown and you cant clearout the opponent legally then it doesnt give you licence to torpedo in a high speed and do it illegally. The answer to Aki's question is "Be there earlier".
