    My favorite part about this scene is that Missandei corrects Dany's translation, and Dany lets her. A lesser ruler, like Cersei or Joffrey, would've been offended by the interruption and maybe even punished the person, but Missandei speaks with such confidence because she knows that Daenerys respects her and her opinion. It really shows how connected Dany is to her people and how different she is from previous and present rulers. Such solid characterization that got shucked out the window

    • @brooklynbud1138
      @brooklynbud1138 2 года назад +393

      Dany was also surrounded by "yes men" and "yes women" ever since her days in the Dothraki Sea proclaiming her as some kind of Messiah. Over time, this is reinforced and boosts her ego to the point of having a god complex. Even her closest lover - the honorable-to-a-fault Jon Snow - couldn't reassure her with genuine, good-faith reassurances that she and she alone was the queen he chose, willingly. Dany's suspicions were right; many in Westeros would never accept her, for good reason.
      Remember, Westeros people remember the Targaryens, especially the latter rulers, as cruel, monstrous, and insane. If Adolf Hitler had a daughter - no matter how genuinely kind, thoughtful, intelligent, or empathetic she was - came to Germany and wanted to assume power, wouldn't you think the German people would have a legitimate right to be suspicious or reject her, given her father was legitimately insane? Consider the broader perspective.
      The characterization was right on point. With Jorah, Dario, and Varys dead, and with Missandei, Jon Snow, and Tyrion out of sight during the Battle of Kings Landing, Dany was alone riding her dragon when she saw the Red Keep. Nobody to advise her. Nobody to coax her out of the madness that was always there. Nobody to reassure her to do the right thing. She had every chance to do the right thing. Ultimately, she didn't. Above all the people who loved her, above her sense of duty to those that trusted her and her will to "break the wheel", it was power she truly wanted. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. She gave in to her worst instincts. At her core, what Dany cared about more than ANYTHING else was touching the Iron Throne. Jon absolutely made the right choice, even if it would haunt him personally for the rest of his life.
      As Master Aemon (Targaryen) said himself: "Love is the death of duty." Jon Snow willingly gave up his title of King in the North to serve the greater good. Dany willingly gave up everything and everyone that had ever loved to pursue her one true love: the Iron Throne. Jon Snow is ice: cold, hard, uncomfortable but always true. Danaerys Targaryen is fire: passionate, intense, and warm, but lethal if not kindled and harnessed correctly.

    Gods, Melisandre's valyrian sounds so soothing to the ear. I don't even know if its good, but I just know that she's speaks smoothly. It sounds foreign, exotic, but regal all at the same time. Beautiful fantasy language. And when she reverts back to common tongue, it actually feels like the character's secondary language. This may be a credit to the actress. That, or english may well be her actual secondary language. It probably is, she is too convincing.

    Daenerys should have never left the Essos/Meereen. She rose from beggar to a Khaleesi to a Queen, and she was beloved by a lot of her subjects because she tried to do what she thought was right, particularly as it came to slavery. She reignited her own dynasty. Trying to take the Iron Throne was a mistake. She went from being viewed in a positive light as "Mhysa" and the Breaker of Chains to simply a Targaryen conqueror. English is many people’s mother (and ONLY) tongue and they can’t tell the difference between their, they’re and there or it’s and its or your and you’re. Say “pacifically”. There’s so much more.
      Yeah she had a good education but it’s her “mother tongue” while she has spent her entire life speaking a dozen devolved variants of it. There is evidence that Valyrian culture did have a patriarchal aspect so it wouldn’t surprise me if this tiny little grammar mistake could be missed by her.
      Also, she probably learned high Valyrian like third hand fleeing across Essos. If she had been taught by old school Targs in King’s Landing or even as a scholar in Valyria I’d think that a bad mistake but she’s not.
      Missabdei on the other hand, while a slave, is a translator by career to a very rich man living around near old Valyria. She probably had access to much more expensive education and materials.

He’ll let you do that, and he’ll even hold you within arms reach so you can do it more easily. His army is irrelevant. They’ll allow you to run past all of them and kill their leader. He said "ally", no ally bend the knee, you become ally because you have a common enemy or similar interest, if you ask to bend the knee means you don't look for an ally, you look forward to subdue the person.
    In the previous countries where slavery was going on, she was a good fit as a queen, but in a country based on alliencies, different kingdoms and chavalery she was unfitting. She tasted it in the north with Sansa, she saw what a family that rules for generation can be loved and trusted by people. Sansa was raised noble, but she also suffered shit because of her status, that why she wanted to be a queen alone, so no-one could ever control her. Same for Dany. Being a queen of the entire South, with the stark in the north she could have created a future of prosperity.

    That would've made more sense than her seeing the ruins of King's Landing and innocents becoming casualties, it was uncharacteristic of her to do that unless they built her character up for that which they didn't. So far, she was only ruthless to armed men who were against her.

    I think one of her biggest mistakes on the show was entering Westeros as a conqueror and usurper, demanding everyone bend the knee or die. She should have come in, making allies first, and then worry about the Iron Throne later. Identifying herself as everyone's Queen immediately put people off because her family was overthrown for good reason. She was still young and could have taken her time to gain everyone's trust. Forcing John Snow to "bend the knee" was stupid. It weakened Jon Snow in the eyes of his people (whom had just named him King in the North) and made Daenerys an incredibly untrustworthy newcomer. Trying to attack too early (Casterly Rock) divided her forces and led to severe losses in Dorn and High Garden. She should have gathered more allies first and then attacked as a united front. The Iron Bank may have even been a good place for Daenerys to visit, herself, and bolster support there. She turned out to be a terrible diplomat.

    • @OfAshesPhoenix
      @OfAshesPhoenix 10 месяцев назад +9

      Did we watch the same show?
      She had allies, Dorne, Iron Islands and Highgarden, three powerful regions, and even then she was hesitant to attack people because Tyrion advised her to sit and do nothing. This caused her the loss of Dorne and Iron Islands. Only then did she attack the Lannister army. And even then, she allowed them to return home after bending the knee rather than take them all as POW, or take the vows of the Night's Watch if they don't want to.
      Why should she not demand that Jon bends the knee? Would any other ruler let Jon just chill as KiTN? Would Stannis or Tywin? No, of course not. Jon ended up bending the knee because she saved his life, not because she demanded it. She then sacrificed half of her armies to defend his home, proving that she earned his loyalty.

If the unsullied prove unable to take the red keep, burn that down too (though its not good after all she needs somewhere to rule from).

Surrendering the North to her even though he knew the lords of the North would not be happy about it was just plain stupid . He psyched her up by telling her she deserves to lead them and that the Northerners would come to accept her as their queen once they saw her valor and selflessness. But when they rejected her and straight up disrespected her openly on multiple occasions he just stood by and did nothing to defend her. Even after she proved her worth by fighting bravely to defend them at the cost of her armies and dragons, they refused to acknowledge her as their queen because they preferred a Stark to lead them.

      they dont know that, if the lannister army is within the walls of KL, she will have to burn through the entire city to kill them, its smarter for dany to draw the lannister army out in the open and then kill it off - so that when she does attack KL, the lannuister army WITHIN the ciy street is less numerous than her unsullied. As the dothraki are usuless in KL streets if the lannister army is shielded and speared

      You mean the whole time in Essos she wasn't talking about conquering Westeros and claiming the Iron Throne. I seem to remember in Qarth telling someone she will reclaim what is hers with fire and blood. She's been obsessed with ruling for many seasons. The ramped it more when she got to Westeros which makes sense.

    • @god-in-schizoid-mind3120
      @god-in-schizoid-mind3120 2 года назад +5

      @Yowatsapp 05 a part of her story has always been about conquering Westeros though. They constantly brought up that she is the last Targaryen and heir to the throne. After her brother dies she is even trying to convince Khal Drogo to go to Westeros, even telling Jorah Mormont to convince him. And yes you brought up Mareen and she made the choice to go liberate the slaves there. But it was just a stopping point. When she first meets tyrion even he tells her to stay, trying to explain to her she made things better there. But she says no, she wants to go home, and by going home that's conquering Westeros. The bending the knee concept is getting the lords to pledge fealty to her. She can not rule Westeros without having the lords bend the knee. Allies or enemies, for her to rule they have to bend the knee to her.. She returned to Westeros to subjugate it, it's not like she wanted a Democracy, she wanted to be queen. They ramped it up more when she arrived in Westeros because it makes since. I do agree the writers fucked up alot. But in that instance I don't think so. I think had the show been fleshed out more, some things would have been better. Other things were just bad by the end.

      @@theboss-nm9et you dodos forget the Starks and a small handful are really the only exception to the GENERAL GOAL OF CONQUERING in this show. Game of Thrones would be the title, gents. Her obsession with demanding nothing BUT a bent knee without discourse or compromise was what i meant. "oh no, Daenerys got angry with that pedantic spice merchant super early in her campaign when everything was against her in the beginning - #madqueen." Think of Robert Baratheon...."FEAR AND BLOOD!"...Stannis...all the major houses of Westeros scheming and plotting to get ahead. Yeah...Daenerys is a part of this insane medieval world. Tyrion and Varys, the Starks, and the others are wise and reasonable, but they also aren't trying to unseat everything. The thing that's annoying is the earlier seasons having actual debate and discourse about her decisions. Her attempts to liberate slaves and gather ships and armies were met with assassination attempts, strange wizards, and counterattacks. And her mistake with the masters was....actually discussed and regretted and addressed. I'd be disinterested in her journey if it was flawless and without doubt or error. But once the Westeros seasons began, she becomes one note. Never forget, even the Starks and the more benevolent characters acknowledged a certain brutality and power to keep the peace. It's constant mantras about keeping a barbaric world in check....and the end lesson is that it will take a long time to guide it out of that. Recognize what a show is and what it's showing you, yeah?

    Melisandre always knew that that "prince" mentioned in the prophecy was Jon Snow but didn't tell it Daenerys not to offend her. She truely believed in Jon Snow.

      but in that case, Jon didn't fullfilled the prophecy; he just united the north and did nothing more than that.

      @@ftw001 yes i agree with you but i think this is scriptwriters' fault. We learnt that Jon Snow was the rightful heir to the iron throne but it changed nothing. He was stabbed in the heart and came back from the dead. At that moment, Melisandre believed that he was the prince promised, that the God of Light had chosen him, and probably all the audience did. But that scene just turned into nothing. I wish there was a different ending for the series. I'd like to see Jon Snow on that throne, not Bran.
