I met Francois in the basement back room of some club in the meat market (14th St NYC), this was circa 1990. So I ventured downstairs cuz I just wasn't feeling the main upstairs room vibe, and found this empty room with incredible music being played. No one in that room but the DJ, a red light, and the sound. I must have danced alone for a good 3 hours before anyone else joined me, by the end of the night, I'd say there were probably 6 people in that room who danced with me all night. A shame I thought... but then...
At the end of the night, or shall I say day (it ended a 8am), I went to the DJ and thanked him for a wonderful evening. I barely drank that night or did any sort of drugs, I just danced the entire time. I told him how I wished more people had been down there to experience his selection and journey (man, he played some remixes I never heard and drop some new stuff as well). He brought me in close, whispered in my ear and said, "the night was perfect". He went to on to tell me, he preferred to play to an empty room to a few people who appreciated the music. Something to the effect "i would rather play for 1 person who appreciates the music, than 1000 people who have no clue". He shook my hand, gave me a hug, and told me to never stop dancing. I really appreciated that moment. I then asked for his name.... "Francois. Francois Kevorkian". I nearly pissed my pants. I thought to myself, these people upstairs had no clue they had a legend in their very own basement, or they did know and didn't care. But then I remember what Francois said... "the night was perfect." Indeed it was Francois, indeed it was. Thanks to you and your musical journey.

Francois, I will never forget you were one of the very few people who actually took the time to see and listen to a young 18 year old skinny kid wanna be songwriter in 1982. This was during the days when you could drop by unannounced at record labels. I was visiting at the time and decided to see what would happen and went to several labels. I'll never forget your graciousness.
Glad you are still doing well. You are a part of the foundation of Prelude.

Incredible vibes (it seems like you can feel a partial imaginative approximation of what it would have felt like to live in and be of that time and place) and very inspiring, both in regards to creativity and just in getting through the battle that is every day life. Gratitude for creating this very important historical record and a timeless music listening experience!

Hello there Mr.K,I have been following dance music for quite a long time, spinning in the underground, crate digging, and used to hit the clubs, before I started working the turntables.I was just having a conversation with a friend also pivotal in the DJ/production world, about some of these JOhnnyComeLately folks, trying to insert themselves in a timeline they were not a part of.There's someone who is making content about people who made tracks with his recordings.Like I explained to him and his cohorts, when HipHop and dance/club music came out, they were not even recognized, until DJs like Frankie Crocker spun the material on commercial radio.Forty years later, now folks are falling out from nowhere claiming they have been hipHop/Househeads,from day one, which is a lie.It took spinning breaks back and forth on the turntables, and creating 12" records/remixes to bring to light many records which could be found in the dollar bins.Anyway, right now I am jamming in bed to Can YOU Handle it???...banger,,That guitar work..Those keys, and then Sharon talks to us,then sings us into heaven..Keep on spinning and bringing us some REAL history...From the Boogie Down Bronx, and I see you Louie Vega, who I finally met in person a few years back,at the skating rink I was working at,HotSkates...

Just been listening to a collection of Sharon Redd's disco hits. It's that PRELUDE SOUND. I saw her live once at Circus Disco in L.A. and she got so into performing she accidentally wrapped herself up in her microphone cord! Somebody unwound it for her. She laughed, we laughed, and we loved her. My favorite dance singles on Prelude: "Keep on Jumpin'", "Searching to Find the One", "Caught Up (in a One Night Love Affair" ( the group was Inner Life , but the lead was Jocelyn Brown, baby!) , and "Beat the Street". I loved this label ! So did DJs 'cause I heard them a lot here in L.A. back in the day when dance music took us all to "church"!

Funhouse rarely gets a mention in conversations of classic NYC clubs, but it was really another venue, where it was more diverse of the city, yes it was mostly kids from Queens and Brooklyn,Latino,Italian mostly. It could be rough at times, but their hulk like security made sure to put a stop to anything before it got out of control.Jonathan Fearing was their first dj and then Jellybean really put it on the map by playing most of these songs on here, plus more experimental stuff like Man Parrish,Kraftwerk,Arthur Bakers tracks and some New wave sounds along with Paradise Garage classics .Jellybean doesn’t get enough credit for bringing all these people together under one roof in a time that was deemed dangerous in NYC.It’s why most people never went home before the sun came out ,😁it was safer then go home at 4 am in an area that was a little sketchy back then, but it’s full of galleries now.👍🏼
