I feel their breakup was ultimately about Sophie wanting to be in England and preferring English ways and English friends. Covid was hard on her to be isolated with a new baby in the US having post partum blues. Joe’s “I don’t care if I tell embarrassing stories” is very non-posh English and probably embarrassed her among her English friends. He tried with agreeing to a house in England but they had already drifted too far apart.
