This never actually crossed my mind! Interesting find! People tend to pull apart this movie in ways Kubrick himself probably couldn’t have even thought about, but this definitely seems like a deliberate little detail or subliminal message on his part. Look forward to more videos like this !
Great video! I’ve never seen anyone make these observations before. I agree with most of it, except the part about Grady calling Jack ‘the important one’, I thought that was a bit of a stretch. I do agree that the imagery of the worker leaving the room as Danny and the Grady-like workman move closer to Jack is definitely an important observation and has foreshadowing qualities. But hey that’s film analysis is about, bringing new ideas to the table and discussing them. Keep them coming! (:
This film has to be the most analyzed movie in history but i cant get enough of it. Some are overeaching but there are many observations are really interesting. Kubrick was great and i would like to think he did leave clues for us to dissect.🙂
Excellent observations. With Kubrick, this could be true what you are saying. The scene where Jack calls Wendy from the hotel, if you look in the background to the right, there seems to be an older version of Jack looking at the maze, again, like you say in the same body position that Jack is in later when he is looking at the maze. Kubrick was amazing, and he was able to I think, put intention themes into this film, like The Wendy Theory and the Apollo theme, just to name a few.
The thing to me that hurt this movie was every time Jack came in contact with a ghost like this scene with Grady, he acts like it's perfectly natural. What the hell is that? Why isn't he scared shitless, running for the hills?
Because ghosts are not real, he basically always talks to himself. In every scene where ghosts are present, there are always some form of reflection surface. For example - mirrors in the bar behind Lloyd the barmen, mirrors in the toilet room behind Grady and finally metal door surface when Jack is locked up and we later hear Grady’s voice. All this time Jack talks to himself in front of the mirror, essentially mentally blocking his own reflection
I heard that in the book: Holloran tried to use his shining ability against Jack because Jack seemed troubled. But when he tried to see in his head, he was immediatley blocket out; It was as if Jack was using (Something) to hide something.
This is brilliant! Yes, if that “extra” was moving in line with Danny’s entrance, it’s bc Kubrick directed him to do so. Also, it almost seems like Grady is running away from Danny, like he’s scarred of him. Danny is after all the biggest threat to the evil hotel, which enlists the weak minded Jack to combat him.
Some work - theatre and screen - not many - but a few - have so many interpretations - who am I to say you are wrong - in fact I think what you have said to be most interesting
What an amazing insight! It was a subliminal message that would for some reason make the fact that Jack met Grady before seem to make sense at a subconscious level.
I have got poisoning from Cheeseburger, but I will write my opinion after return from the hospital. Sorry for this comment, it's one of the things for me to do to remember.
According to Hubrick i was told that there wasn't any ghosts in this particular story and maybe they had jack look at this Grady guy to signal that later he would hallucinate that Grady character being real. Hope explained that clear enough
He didn't, the door handle is an emergency release lock designed to keep someone from locking themselves in a closet or freezer. Rob Ager names the make and model in one of his videos. Jack let himself out
@@aaronhendrickson2793 When Wendy pulls Jack to the door, she tries to open the door but can't until she pulls out a pin which prevents the handle from opening the door. After she pulls Jack into the room and leaves, she secures the pin back in place. The emergency release lock is blocked by that pin. Thus... Wendy, Danny.....Grady or someone/something must pull that pin out before the door will open in any manner. This is approximately 1 hour and 51 minutes into the film (at least my version of the film) Incidentally, while it does not show her doing so....Wendy has also engaged the deadbolt. if you glance above the door handle, there is a deadbolt and that is also in place. Unless someone/something has removed the pin and also disengaged the deadbolt, it is impossible for Jack to open that door. EDIT: Just wanted to mention that I'm a massive fan of Rob Ager and think his videos are amazing.....but he's mistaken in this instance and all you must do is watch the film and pause to clearly see everything I've just described.
UTTER NONSENSE and reading in. Kubrick was meticulous, yeah…but this is just reaching! People did this with Hitchcock films too. In fact concerning Kubrick’s 2001 one viewer wrote him saying he knew why Kubrick called it the HAL 9000. That HAL was the preceding letters of IBM. Kubrick was intrigued and amused by this, but didn’t intend it. It was just a happy coincidence. People need to stop reading in all this crazy stuff and conspiracy theories and just enjoy a well made movie.
I believe I read, in pre-internet days, that the computers were marked IBM and IBM did not like the idea of a computer killing people, so they made Kubrick change it. But at one point in the movie, you can see an IBM logo they didn't remove. IDK, and have never seen the IBM logo, but IF that story is true, it would make the coincidence of H-A-L = I-B-M more unlikely to be an accident.
Oh Christ, still more bullshit theories about a Kubrick film. At 62, and a lifelong cinema nut and having learned all I could about many directors, I consider myself quite the Kubrick appreciator especially as he's a fave. No, I never see him crafting such crap in his visionary work. Let the man test in peace, okay?

Notice the chandelier in the foreground is above Grady and is working (shining) casting him in light whilst the rear of the room has no light working.

well spotted. plus the men in the background aren't that clear which makes one more curious! thanks for this. subscribed

Yes, I think you are right. And Grady is standing under the swastika. But Grady has an English accent.

Another point that can be connected to the restroom scene is the red colour of the couches

Interesting theory. However the Gold room scene was cut from the UK version of the film so was it that important?
Kubrick himself said that the movie is about the reincarnation cycle. The ending of the movie clearly indicates this.
very good
Someone would have mentioned it in behind the scenes takes and whatnot.
It's all about the 7 sisters, the ice maidens 😅

Look at the scene with Danny and wendy eating there lunch and to Danny's right is a camera on the table and wendy's cig box has taken a new lOOk😅

Boring. Go watch the hobbit
If so why not use the same actor ?
That would be too obvious for Kubrick I think.
hmm
🤣
I feel like if this was Kubrick's intention, he would have had Philip Stone play that role.
Well, Jack is kind of bald himself, so I don't think the young guy could be mirroring HIM. Maybe that is Danny's future self.
