    Great video! You are so fun to watch! I just started a garden and I'm so excited! I've actually created a cost analysis spreadsheet to track my garden expenses, retail cost of produce, and how much I harvest to see exactly how much I save my family in cost of produce! I'm trying to share with as many people as possible because gardening is so much fun and can save money too! I'm trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can and share what I learn with others too! Thanks for sharing!!

    Thanks, nice video. I like the fabric grow bags the best, after years of trying various other types of other containers. The air root pruning really makes a big difference in the health of the plants, and I don't have to continually upsize the containers as the plants grow. Only downside is that you really need to stay on top of watering in hot summers. A drip system makes that part easy.

    We.ve found that M&Ms are similar to hydrangea and respond to soil pH. Recall that if your soil is acidic you'll have blue flowers and if your soil is basic you have pink flowers. If you acidify the soil a little bit using tea or vinegar you can increase the proportion of blue M&Ms. By adding lime or wood ash you increase the number of red & orange pips in the pods.

    Can you reuse this year’s container soil for next year’s planting? Or would I need to discard the soil and buy new compost? 🙏🏼

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  4 года назад +1

      If the compost isn't diseased or pest-ridden, you can reuse it. I would still remove it from the pot, then remove any old plant residue, before remixing with some organic fertiliser and perhaps a little more from potting soil. Refill the pots and then, for good measure, top off with a little more fresh potting soil to help start plants off.

    It's was interesting to see how you grow M&Ms. I wonder if you have tried slightly bruising the pods to get blue ones? It may be worth a try.
    My personal favorite from my garden is Liquorish Twists. They have always been my favorite candy but only once in my life (and I was born in 1933) have I been so fortunate as to manage to buy some that were fresh and soft.
    Since I discovered how to grow them in my own garden I have had a never-ending supply of fresh, soft Liquorish Twists.
    Perhaps you could demonstrate their cultivation for others to enjoy.

    where can I get information on how deep containers must be to make sure the vegetables has the best chance of producing the best yield

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  7 лет назад

      There's no gold rule about this. Generally most vegetables need a minimum depth of around 6 inches / 15cm. For root crops such as carrots this will be more like 12 inches / 30cm. While potatoes will need around 24 inches / 60cm as a minimum.

    Blue is a hybrid. Although it is one of the primary colors, and green should be a combination of red and yellow, in horticulture there is excess chlorophyll. The best way to obtain blue is to reverse the process and return to the primary colors by extracting chlorophyll.
    This can be confirmed by the Luther Burbank Gardens, Santa Rosa, California:

    Is it possible to grow beets in bags, layering them, the same way one can do with potatoes?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  7 лет назад +1

      Beets aren't layered, or earthed up, like potatoes are. You simply sow the seeds and then leave them to grow (while watering and feeding of course). Beets can be grown in containers kept in a sunny position. Just fill up the container with good potting soil then sow thinly and cover the seeds over with about a quarter to half inch of potting soil. Water and when the seedlings come up, thin them out so they are about 5-6in apart in each direction, or 3in apart for smaller beets ideal for salads.

    Can you do something to the soil from your garden to kill the weeds, so you can use the soil. It's just that I have so much soil here that buying soil seems ridiculous.

    • @cdogvlog5557
      @cdogvlog5557 8 лет назад

      I mean kill the seeds from the weeds was what I meant to say.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  8 лет назад

      You could try making your potting mix by combining topsoil with garden-made compost or leaf mould. I have heard that you can sterilise soil by microwaving it in batches to kill off any organisms. However, that seems rather extreme and you'd also kill off all the valuable microorganisms in the soil. An alternative would be to part-fill containers with soil then fill the top half with bought-in potting soil, which will be sterile. This would be preferable to using only soil, which in a container would be very heavy and run out of nutrients quickly.

      I am in the tropics and have gone the container route because of pest. Have been using RUclips and asking persons who are gardening for advice. I have mixed my soil with bag mixes, sometimes sand, also vermiculite and perlite I added cinnamon to the mix which kills off certain bacteria. It is a learning process and I use my plants as my gauge.

    • @GrowVeg

      Potatoes need plenty of moisture to grow steadily. Ideally the seed potatoes will have been showing sprouts (chits) when you planted them, this way they are primed to grow away strongly. Take a look at our video on growing potatoes in pots for more tips: ruclips.net/video/wrcPaPtTzHc/видео.html

    Not good to add gravel - it makes large spaces in the containers where the water gets water-logged in the soil and actually prevents drainage.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  8 лет назад +1

      We changed the advice on adding gravel following further research and experience. We now advise not to add gravel - see our video on gardening myths: ruclips.net/video/A_c4VdS3K3c/видео.html and fast forward to 2 mins 15 secs in.

    In Growveg video " 7 Gardening Myths Debunked: Common Gardening Advice That Isn't Right!" #3 tells us NOT to add pottery shards etc to the bottom of a pot to aid drainage. Yet this video you tell us too - What's with the contradiction?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  9 лет назад +2

      We've changed our minds in light of our own growing experience. Several of us on the team (including in this video) always used to add pottery shards but the evidence is thin on this being important unless the soil is particularly heavy (in which case it's probably not the best for containers anyway!) We always aim to give honest real-world gardening advice, so thanks for pointing out our change of tack on this point.
