I learned the hard way, without using a jack the first time. After both bolts were out, the old shock still needed to be pried out. Hitting it with a small mallet the back end collapsed on my arm(between the tire and back plastic shell). Just scaped skin, but I didn't think that the shock carries all that weight by itself. The new shock will need to be lined up to the holes by slowing jacking up the frame. I did all this with four tires down. To make it easier, in my case, to get the top bolt off I took out the air filter and the casing its in.

I have a Recon 250 on the ground is the shock under pressure and if so how do you jack it up, relieve the pressure and take out the old shock this video doesn't cover that

Put a jack on saw horse to get it right where you want it.

another way to hold it would be to use a strap andhook it onto the grab bar then rap int around your rafters in your garage

I plan on doing this to the 250ex my wife rides, I really hate working on a dirty item, always wash before work especially if your opening the motor

@dirtrider955 That I'm not sure about? I would measure both of them if you have one laying around. If they are within 1/2 inch of each other than I would say go for it.,
