Asking is a respect thing. I asked my wife's ( now deceased ) Mother and Sister for her hand because her dad had passed away early in her life. Some folks say it's a Southern thing, nope it's a respectful thing. You did good Hunter!!!!

We raised our sons to ask for the blessings of the parents. It’s a great sign of respect for the parents of the future bride. Our oldest did ask and the father of the bride seemed to really appreciate it. Young men, do think of doing this. It will aid in the familial relationship. Congratulations to you two!

I did the respectful thing also and it's also about honor. My then girlfriends family was all together at Thanksgiving and my plan was much like yours, to ask the family. I had a speech that was for her dad and when I took him into the garage to ask him I thought it was going pretty good. I got about half way thru and he starting crying, it shocked me, didn't know what I did wrong, until he smiled and said yes. Making him be and feel that important is the right thing to do. So don't let those comments saying you should have skipped this step spoil your moment and memories, trust me when you look back after years of happy marriage, you'll be happy you did, I am. When you do ask her, be respectful of her also, because her memories of that moment mean more then you think.

I quickly found out that the first (or decisive) person to ask for your daughter's hand is not the father, but her mother. You just have to make the father think he was asked first. 😄And that's how I did it. I first asked her mother when we were alone and over a meal together at a restaurant, my now wife was lured away from her mother (looking at the architecture of the building or something) and I asked him for his daughter's hand.

I think it is so valid to ask, and obviously when it's important to someone that their family be asked, it should absolutely happen! However when you say it should always be done, you lose me. Personally, I'd feel disrespected by my partner asking for my parents approval, because I consider my own approval to be what's most important, and that my family does not/should not dictate who I am with. However, that is so PERSONAL, everyone has a right to choose what is important to them in that situation. So, Its fabulous that you asked, because it was important to libby. But it by no means practiced or expected of every couple.

Asking for blessings even though there is no serious need for it (not any more), I think, signifies an intention that wishes to honor all the parties involved. It carries - for me - a special level of request with all due respect where nothing, except acceptance is possible. I believe the intention from both of you is real. My fiancé that passed away almost 4 years ago, her birthday was on april 23th. We were almost 6 years together(only 1 day less) and she had asked me even to marry her. I miss her still ofcourse. She passed away on march 29, 2019 due to kidneydisease. (Relation started at march 30, 2013)

I asked my wife’s parents also…It was a great moment…
I asked my fiancé’s father for his blessing last May and was told no. Her folks were also of a strong faith and as soon as we started talking, I was being accused of adultery because we live together in the same house. That is none of anyone’s business and he should have just taken my word as soon as I said instead of going into full interrogation mode. I was told that we would need to live separately, have an established career, and my race/religion was brought up because I was “of a different culture”. I felt persecuted for believing in a different denomination of Christianity. On top of it all, her mom caused a scene beforehand by cussing me out at a restaurant for correcting her about some military thing that related to my cousin. After her father and I talked, her mom was berating her, making accusations, and giving the both of us a disgusted look as they both left us. It was a s***show.
Bottom line, I asked her for her hand 1 year later in front of all our friends during a Jiu-jitsu match. We’re both happy and her parents are trying to come back into our lives and pretend it never happened

Yeah that is same here in my country 🇵🇭 when the guy ask the hand of the girl for marriage, he would talk the parents. Not necessarily for approval esp if both are of age but more on respect. In the Philippines we call it “PAMAMANHIKAN”. Basically asking the girl’s hand in marriage. The man with his parents will go to the girl’s house and ask blessing from the head of the family for their daughter’s hand in marriage. A custom we still do out of respect.

Asking is a sign of an honorable man. It's a point of honor between men. I asked both my wife's step-dad and real dad. Nerve wracking? You have no idea.
And I was 36 at the time. I had visions of she can always do better than you, but not worse....being the reply. And they would have been right. I'm a career railroad engineer. Who wants their daughter marrying that? Several checks and stock options later from my broker, they agreed to meet with me. It's a right of passage, and fun, because it's part of the circle of life. So enjoy these moments, and if you're lucky, you only have to go through them once...best to you both...
Considering the current decrease in morality, respect, and common decency, and the rise of wokeness these days, of course Hunter is going to get flack for asking for permission to marry Libby.
