Thanks Daric, getting back into the Bass after I gave up on it years ago as a teenager. I am now more determined to learn this instrument as I have gotten older and more disciplined. Thanks for the metronome instructions I use it whenever I practice.
I was struggling with how to hold my bass with the strap. I realized that to find your sweet spot for playing effectively was to make sure your left thumb placement was accurate. I also realized that shifting your fingers over a hair to fret a note was a help as long as you fretted the note correctly.
Thank you. I like these simple examples to playing. Trying to figure out how to make my playing better. After 7 years of self learning songs. With no music understanding. And a stack of music theory and practice books. I just can't comprehend most of it or it seems so burdensome that I won't do it. A lot of online guys say way to much. To much information to digest. Short sweet to the point. Thank you✌️✌️
I had to go to my bathroom mirror and see how was holding my bass and fretting my fingerboard on the neck. I also was looking to see if I was doing my index/middle finger technique correctly. I am going to get into a routine of practicing this exercises in front of a mirror about 20 times a day to work on the small pieces to this exercises with a metronome. GOT TO SEE MYSELF DOING THIS!
I've been using this technique for years via the great Victor Wooten as well. Let me say: this works! USE IT! Studio sessions will thank you, especially when you play with a click. Live sessions will go great, even with a click! I used to hang out with a lot of classical percussionists who would tell me, "If you can hear the metronome, you are wrong." Obviously that's not 100% of the case with bass, but they had a point. The more I work on stuff I think I know, I try to slow it down and really get a feel for the spaces in between the notes with the click/metronome. There's nothing more honest than playing with a metronome. Do it! You'll thank yourself later.
Derek my name is James I got to tell you I watch this video I liked it you got a lot of good ideas this is the kind of thing that I tell a lot of people I'm going to complish musician I've been playing for well over 40 years and my first guitar at the age of five I was already playing and singing by the age of 8 had my first band a little after 13 years old but my first metronome just before I was 13 years old I've been studying music theory for 30 years and I'm very accomplished and what I just saw what I just watched was very very cool I think you're a really great teacher I have two friends of mine that have been playing bass guitar specifically I'm a guitarist for almost as long as I have and they just haven't got it I can't figure out why but watching your video I think I'm going to send it to them and then I will go to their house as I usually do and we'll rehearse and I'll ask them if they worked on it thank you for this video it's really great I love it. Keep up the good work brother!
Thank you so much for this video, all the informations that you provided is truly a great resource to have in mind! As a beginner, it’s extremely helpful. But I have a question, how do i know which bass notes will be played in between of the metronome beats, instead of coinciding with them? Because sometimes the bass doesn’t just go straightforward, but has a groove.. And is it different when playing with drums?
Awesome Daric. Thanks. 💪 I've been a 4 strings bass guitar player since i started playing (five years). Now, i have to do with a 5 strings. Could you help me find a way to get accustom to a 5 strings bass? Exercises or whatever. It'll be really cool. Keep on going, man. Thanks for all. Stay blessed.
Hey man i loved the idea, but i do think the explanation was a little off. If i should suggest anything it would be to first show, the point you're trying to make. which means play the 16th notes then the 16th over the 8th notes click and then the 16th notes over the quarter click. After you have done that, break it down and do your explanation, it gives a better understanding on why this way of practice works and what benefit will come out of it. Cause i do agree with you it is an AMAZING way to learn and practice time. Hope what i ment makes sense? :) cheers
Hey daric I know this video is a year old, but my question is if I were to set the metronome to 4-4 or even more difficult do i just play the Sam's note over and over or would i play something different like i normally would, this is a beginners question but I just want to understand this more, thanks for the content.
man im sorry if you've answered this lots but do you think I should start on 4 or 5 string bass? I have small hands and and I think the weight of a 5 string may be an issue, what you think?
callmedeno I am going to add my 2 cents only because I struggled with this same question when I started playing 3 years ago. The most important thing to consider is play what is most comfortable for you. That goes for the number of strings, but also every other aspect of a bass you choose to learn on. My ultimate decision to start on a four string came down to this mindset....many, many, many incredible bassists and basslines were recorded on a four string, since the invention of the bass guitar and it's introduction to the world of music. Secondly, I felt the simpler that I could keep my learning, the better off I'd be. Meaning one less string, 21 less (or 24) notes to try to memorize when learning the fretboard. Thirdly, like you I have hands on the smaller side so a 4 string neck just felt so much more natural in my hands, and this may be the most important of all the decision makers. Ultimately once you "master" the 4 string instrument and the overall role of a bass within a band, switching to a 5er will be much, much easier. I hope this is helpful for your decision...Dave

We need more lessons like this because it is the small things that determine your bass playing proficiency and efficiency. 👈🏿
This was great, short and to the point. Got me to use my internal clock in sync with the external beat. Thank you!
First time bass player, in training...fired up...thanks for this video....I just purchased a Metronome, too!!
Hey Daric, awesome working from sixteenth notes to quarter notes. Never thought of that! Makes very good sense.

Helped out a lot. Thanks man
Very important and many don’t understand this. Not easy but can be done

Thanks man made sense. I played a little 22 years ago and decided to learn it in a more disciplined fashion. This was a huge help! Awesome sauce!
Thanks for your clear-cut video. I'm going to pass this along to a student who has struggled with timing issues.
