- In this video I test if it is possible to use umbrellas instead of a parachute. I test it by holding onto two large umbrellas as I jump off of different things into a pool. I compare this to when I'm not holding the umbrella and see how much they slowed me down. Then I talk about if umbrellas could be used to replace a parachute during skydiving!

I did it as a 50 lb 8 year old. Jumped off the top of a slide with the umbrella... it slowed me down, but the umbrella inverted and I fell at full speed halfway down. Didn't hurt as much if I tried it without the umbrella lol

When I was 8, I tried jumping into a giant pile of sand with a big umbrella from 2nd floor. I took the same precautions with strings to avoid it from being bent. But many of the arms broke and it took me like 5 minutes to climb back from inside of the sand pile.

Or it's the complete disregard for the scientific method and wrong information.
He is completely ignoring sources of errors, measuring from the wrong points (He should have measured from the highest point the belt reached until it hit the water, then he could calculate the acceleration he was under with and without the umbrellas, thus get an estimate for the force which the umbrellas slowed him down).
One obvious error source he skipped is that he most likely jumped higher without the umbrellas because of how awkward it is to hold them, thus resulting in a higher speed from the points he measured.
Also, drag is not proportional to velocity, it's proportional to velocity squared. This guy has no clue what he is doing and is just trying to get views by "sounding scientific".

I pondered this in situations of being trapped in a tall burning building, escape via stairs is impossible, and building will either collapse or those trapped will be burned alive. In such cases (including 9/11 and numerous other historic examples) some people jumped rather than go down with the building or be burned alive. If umbrellas like this were available that might make for a survivable (with serious injuries) landing. He said falling with these two umbrellas would give about 30mph impact, I'm guessing that would be survivable.

You need to put a hole in the top of the umbrella to increase the drag coefficient. Otherwise the air efficiently flows around it. It also might save you from having to add the strings.

I just watched this video. You never talked about how large an umbrella would have to be in order to slow you down to a safe speed. So I did some math and calculated that if you had a hexagonal umbrella that was 15ft from side to side, you would have as much surface area that an an expert skydiver could use. I think it could be done!
Parachute unlike umbrella can glide. And right before landing you can use this gliding energy to slow down by flaring. 225 square feet canopy is usually enough for a novice skydiver that weight up to 180-190 pounds. But even if you use the same canopy and weight only around 150, but don't have ability to glide and therefore flare, you most likely gonna break your legs.
He stated 260 sq feet for skydiving towards the end of the video
Leonardo DaVinci designed a parachute that was essentially a giant pyramid covered in linen that was roughly 15ft across. About 10 years ago it was built and tested by a skydiver by suspending it under a hot air balloon and releasing it.
It worked.
DaVinci designed a working parachute _hundreds_ of years before human flight was a reality!

Skydiver here, we actually use a quotient of you weight to sqft of you canopy, in which the more experienced you are, the smaller the quotient you can use. For a 70kg person at an initial level, a 200sqft canopy should be fine :D
