      Isn't this the default basically features of every tiling window managers? what's revolutionary/new here?
      ok, maybe not for some bad or minimal ones, like dwm, but anything like awesomewm, qtile ... hyprland(with window rules)

      @@vaisakh_km it's not on Gnome, it's not in Plasma, and Cosmic isn't a twm, but a normal desktop, so i'd say it's pretty much new (for Linux at least)

      @@mii_beta i would say, cosmic is a tiling window manager... others doesn't have because those are floating window managers
      but using a tiling extentions for those to make it tiling will give this features
      but for those who just using a desktop enviroment, without much customization like windows or mac, this would be a new feature

    Once dropped a window on top of another and they stacked, couldn't get them out

    This is really cool. I would love if I could spawn the windows in some premade layouts like BSPWM.

    you could do the same with any window manager
    for example Hyprland has floating dynamic and tiling
    cosmic laying between DE & WM

      tbf, hyprland is one of the most complete wm (btw wm on wayland are actually wayland compositors ;-), so it's not fair to use it as a comparison lol

      i didnt know you could that on HL, i only used it for a for few hours anyway; thats a diff though, Cosmic makes it easier both on set up and discoverability of the features, that should be the same as HL; although HL is much smoother currently (when opening new windows or when moving them etc)

    Hi @mii_beta - could you please do a video on tiling extensions for gnome? I've tried asking reddit which is the most stable, closest to wm like hyprland, can do per workspace tiling, extension currently available for gnome.... the problem is every time I make a post about tiling extensions in r/gnome the post gets removed by a mod... no idea why.

    im literally afraid of tiling after i watch the last clip

  • @NeroPawn
    @NeroPawn 7 месяцев назад +1

    Too much complexity involved, manual tiling will always have layout issues, can't center windows, can't partially overlap windows, have to toggle between tiling and floating mode and the list goes on. After dealing with the shortcomings I do believe extensions like gTile and Tactile are better solutions, but due to their nature they might break in newer gnome releases

    • @mii_beta
      @mii_beta  7 месяцев назад +7

      how that's any complex? you can switch on/off the auto-tiling per workspace ..cant get much simpler

    • @NeroPawn
      @NeroPawn 7 месяцев назад

      What I mean is that you have to keep track in your head of current workpace mode, this introduce friction, a better solution are tiling areas that coexist with floating windows, you have tiling and floating without compromise, at most 3 key presses to toggle any window. first key is to show tiling area second two keys to select a rectangular area, DONE.

    • @mii_beta
      @mii_beta  7 месяцев назад +1

      @@NeroPawn you can tile on a floating workspace too, for example by pushing a window to an edge or with a shortcut; but auto-tiling is a completely different thing; personally not a fan, but there is a large percentage of developers that are using it ...plus Brodie 😱

    • @esn2618
      @esn2618 7 месяцев назад

      Also you can set either floating or tiling mode on all workspaces so it will be everywhere the same

    • @NeroPawn
      @NeroPawn 7 месяцев назад +1

      I'm not a fan as well, heck I'm not a fan of manual i3/sway like tiling nor hyperland like tiling, and the pop os solution feels like i3. I think on-demand tiling is the future, stuff like gTile and tactile, but there's no point in beating a dead horse, can't change people's opinion in the internet, but would be super cool if you could showcase tactile considering the ammount of people you reach a ytber, can't found a single video on yt about it 😑
