This film (please see all the parts) and the radio programme from which it is drawn represent the highest level of achievement that has been reached in celebration of people and their way of life. It's a world that has always changed and which will continue. Capturing it at one point in time and not losing the sense of history and place; just genius. But don't forget the people who contributed themselves for our edification and appreciation.
at 07:48 minutes into this film i discovered a picture of my Great, Great, Grandfather Edward (Ned) Ellis. He was the skipper of the lowestoft life boat at the time this photograph was taken. he famously posed for the Lifebuoy toilet soap adverts in 1905/6 for lifebuoys advertising campaign. any lifebuoy adverts you see are all relative to Ned. He was awarded a medal of bravery for the saving of lives in a shipping disaster off lowestoft. I am extremely proud of him. from his great great grandson martin. Ned's son George moved to Grimsby he died as skipper of a mine sweeper in WW1 sailing out of Newhaven, he had a son Herbert also a skipper sailing out of Grimsby, who had a son William a ships rigger, who had a son Martin, Me I am the first in the line of Ellis's from lowestoft, from around 1700, not to go to sea or work on the Docks
The brilliant eyes of these old seamen, so striking, came from a lifetime of long-sighted perspective over the sea. Far-seeing men are what we need, and lack, today.
I wish I could get a cd of all the old fisherman’s songs as they are a part of our heritage that is rapidly disappearing and as the old fishermen are now passing on , unfortunately our heritage is passing with them
The original masters have long been lost. The programmes were only aired a few times. These recordings were made from the only surviving films in the archives, hence the time codes. These were copied to analogue VHS, then digitised very many years later. Subtitles were never provided, likely not even thought of.. What we have here are remarkable survivors.
This is a digital copy of the only extant version of this film from the dusty archives, hence the time codes. Its a very rare survival. If someone wants to add subtitles go ahead. The regional dialects are typical of fishing communities - now alas mostly all gone.
I wish I could understand what they're saying... english is not my mother tongue but even if it was I doubt I could understand this lol You should've put subtitles
+Ricky Reynolds I think you'll find if you apply your mind to the problem, the "Capitalist freedom to fish" is not what these men were involved in. They were engaged in one of the most dangerous industries in the world, scraping a living from the sea. Fishing pre-dates capitalism, communism and all of these modern blind faith religions by many thousands of years. It hasn't become much less dangerous over the years I might add. It has traditionally provided the life blood for communities for centuries, until laissez faire captalism, and 5 year plan communism destroyed the shoals of herring by fishing them without regard for their real worth. "Grab as much as possible, buy low, sell high" or "follow the plan of our great leader" and the hell with tomorrow. Don't think the Russian "Klondykers" in their huge fishing trawlers were any less to blame than the monstrous great fish factories of Spain. Well tomorrow has come, and the fishing stocks have been depleted to the point where some may well never recover. Well done all you who treat the environment as a "resouce" a "wealth generator" or whatever other unimaginative sound bite fits with your "ism". Now go back and watch the documentary again and learn something from it rather than spouting buzzwords.
Ewan was a great singer - and a good man.

You should write what you know of them, lest their stories and history be lost. Fascinating stuff, thanks.
Thanks for upload great song and photos..faces like that don't come from watchingTV!

I love this documentary. Thank you.

Tremendous great work so happy to find this truth beyond fiction
Thanks John

thanks for sharing, very interesting
thank you
Where can I purchase a sweater like that? What brand is it? I really dig his fisherman chic style.
LL Bean has replicas
it wasn’t fashion, but function. now anyone can look like something they aren’t
@@earinsound well put
When he says wicked old men you are looking at my great great great grandfather holding the cards. Dont think he was that wicked.
sign me up, this guy is a god, he has forever changed my life, his music is the soul of man made carnate, a sage, diviner, a vision
Hi ! I'm wondering, where could I get the original movie ? Is there any platform where I can see it online or buy it ! Thanks
These are as far you can get to the originals. Thanks to Jim C. for the original VHS tapes.
Sweet film, but it does deserves subtitles...

Luke Kelly's version of this song is by far the best (apart from mine).
agree
Well it's a slightly forced use of the term "irony" young Ricky. Fishing can, and should, be part of a sustainable planned economy.

Not 'should have' - perhaps 'could have.' But even to English folk the regional dialects are hard to fathom.
@@chrisbrady3979 Nah they're not.
Kind of ironic. A Communist wanna-b-Dictator`s music Ewan MacColl, and a movie about the freedom of a Capitalist freedom to fish.
We can see Ricky's taste in music from his RUclips channel. Kind of ironic that it all sucks.
