I’ve been a mtg player for 22 years. And a Canadian retailer for wizards for 20. I love the game but haven’t been able to bring myself to play competitively in two years because of the dumpster fire of sets. I quit standard, quit pioneer. Literally nothing interesting to me or has any synergy with what I play. Then Wizards putting ridiculous restrictions on being a wpn store, player base size, number of events required, engagement of players. I dropped that too cause the effort vs the rewards isn’t worth the work and let the other retailers in the area fulfil the watered down tournament scene. They are messing with the game too much. Adding things from other games. It doesn’t feel like mtg to me anymore and I’ve had so many customers say the same. Seriously considering selling my power and just playing commander as it’s the only fun I’ve had playing in a long time. I try to fulfill the needs and wants of customers for singles but it’s literally not worth opening product to sell 50 cent rares and loose money on boxes. I have packs on my shelf going back to chronicles. I’ve put everything I have into it. They are just devaluing their own game with all the variants, and loosing customer faith. Almost makes me want to go back to the fow tcg. At least I expect the cards to be cheap. Really disappointed in wizards as a long term fan as a player and a retailer. Not sure how long before I jump ship. I’ve stuck with it for so long.
Kaldheim is my favorite set in a while flavor wise. The full art pathways are Beautifu not to mention some really awesome unique cards, the foretell mechanic is underrated.
I really didn't think strixhaven was bad and I liked the Japanese art in the collectors. I think the mystical archives were stupid but the set in general I thought was decent
As someone who stopped collecting a long time ago but still plays with friends and stuff I can tell you there is a correlation to the power level of the sets and the up and down arrows you've drawn lol.
Almost like their is a direct correlation between the state of the game and the value of cards. Just like crypto coins, magic cards are worthless when you realize any value is artificially created intentionally... without a working game the cards are worthless...Keep putting profits ahead of game state... Wizards likes to shoot their foot too much to survive into the future... New generations wont play these obviously stupid games overpriced for no reason aside greed...

Great cards in the set and the commander decks. Solid unccommons that go into lots of different decks in all formats. Mystical archives was too many trash cards and the land cycle was trash.
WotC will never admit it, but Mystical Archive cards were supposed to be Harry Potter cards, but because Rowling is toxic to the people that work for WotC that they had to pull back. If they would have stuck with it, Strixhaven would be still printing cash like Modern Horizons II.
i thought strixhaven actually had some banger cards in the set not just the reprints. but yeah, both the alt art reprints were great in that set as well.
I feel since Baulders Gate did so bad *popularity wise* It won't get much prints from its initial release, making the cards go higher in price as the months and years goes by.
Very long term maybe. Part of the issue is it stands out as a terrible set with very little in the way of good cards even compared to the awful sets we got in the last 5 months of last year.

Is it possible that more and more players are transitioning to playing Standard on Arena (pretty much forced everyone to in 2020) and now it’s shifted the paper mindset to Commander and any of the non standard formats?
Standard itself is the reason it's dying. Covid did overall harm. Standard isn't an eternal format, the rotation to create balance is a myth. The reason why Pioneer even exists is because people like standard, they just don't like the expense and rotation. Cards becoming worthless doesn't sound appealing to anyone.
Rudy, you have the influence to make Jacksonville Florida magic like the Seattle of the east coast. You could make a ton of money if you opened a real store and held tournaments and events. We can always buy the cards because we like them and we can play a fun game with them. I know collectables are a legitimate investment, but, and Rudy is well aware of this, not every investment gives a return. Sealed MTG product has been a pretty stellar investment for a long time now. It's difficult to find a legal ROI as good as what MTG has been. Also talk about a great run for what was essentially an even dorkier game than pen and paper D and D. Back when I was around high school age I got into the Decipher Star Wars ccg but pretty much refused to have anything to do with MTG. I bought the Star Wars stuff because I grew up with it and not for an investment, but if you would have asked me back then which game would still be around and which would be worth money I would have said Star Wars because well, it's Star Wars. Didn't figure MTG would last 5 years. Of course with the Star Wars ccg it was just about doomed from the start to not last all that long since it's based on an IP that has limited characters and ideas to draw from, even if there was quite alot of it. MTG doesn't have that issue. They can keep creating new stuff for as long as they can create them. Anyways I digress. WotC has been pulling a few dick moves lately and I really question the quality of the leadership along with some of who they hired. I played Arena a little bit and it's pretty great save for the way it extracts money from players which is par for the course for the format, but all they have to do in order to keep making money is just put out good stuff. What pisses me off is that stores are not selling boxes and the prices don't tank in my country. The only products worth to buy are 2020 boxes that are half the price of anything that comes out today.
Give it another 2 years. Magic and Pokemon will be worth more than ever If u have sealed product. New or old. Box it up. Tape it up. And bring back out in two years.
Oddballs you didn't touch on that I'm interested in hearing about are Mystery Booster and Double Feature. Double Feature seems SUPER TOXIC, but also like it's the bastard child of such hated sets it could eventually be a goldmine.
“6.9” years 😂 I remember buying shadows and conspiracy 2 from you back then , I remember getting some Pokémon too . Sun and moon ? Breakpoint idk . Anyways ya I forgot I even had conspiracy in my closet until u brought it up . Thanks again ❤
honest truth I think that weather set does good really has to do with the power level of the set .... if there are strong cards that can be played in commander ( the only format people buy for in paper ) then the set will do good otherwise it will tank
On the prerelease weekend of Baldurs Gate, I asked my LGS staff what the set boxes cost. They said they keep it roughly “at cost” for prerelease and then it’ll “probably go up.” Yeah right, I dodged a bullet on that one
My Distro who will remain unnamed, dropped our DM2 from 36 CBs to 5, and 60 Draft to 6. I have a feeling it's because we cancelled 1 case of CM2 of draft and 1 CB for Cm2, AFTER release. We couldn't afford it anymore as literally nothing sold. He even told us that a hobby distributor in the..."south" was dropping accounts if Lgs didn't take everything. Which we did until the stuff after release that someone said they'd buy till they seen how trash it was. Our rep from this hobby place in the south, said for Masters 22, order mqx amount and presale. We did and got 7% of what we ordered. We would have been screwed with negative reviews had I not been weary about what he said we would get. Honestly, the distros are to the point where they aren't needed. I can get everything for damn near the same price from someone who isn't a wholesaler. Probably gonna tell them to gfy.
stay the course man i spend as much as i can and work hard we had our difference but i respect you more than anyone for being real and only real ones know you know your shit
I liked Crimson Vow :( I picked up a lot of cheap singles from it : ) Kaldheim still surprises me because it was a great set, it had a really cool showcase style, and yet the value has sort of just sat there stagnated. On the plus side it hasn't tanked, and I foresee it only rising long term, its just a matter of by how much and how quickly.
i actually thought Adventures of the forgotten realm was going to be trash but really it was one of the best sets ive seen recently and i spent like 300$ just on singles a couple months ago
AFR is my #1 underrated pick. MID is #2. Just feels like there's a lot people haven't realized with the cards. I have a gut feeling the commander format is going to be what pushes it up.
Who would have imagined giving a bunch of Timmys a giant check to buy MTG cards would create a bubble in demand, and therefore prices? WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT!?
I feel it’s pretty silly to make that correlation, less than 40% of Americans received stimulus payments, and a majority of those people used the money to settle bills as per the available data. The amount of people who got the check and sunk it into MTG is negligible at best. The prevailing economic theory is the free time the pandemic afforded people got them to revisit old interests or find new ones. Then a lot of those people left for multiple reasons but I’m sure one of them must be the prices.
@@SMTHNWSSN There was also a huge boom for crypto at the time, and the moment that started to look sketchy, people were dumping a lot of money into whatever unregulated commodities they could find. Collectibles across the board went up as a very large amount of money went into them.
2019: biggest investment ever in organized play from Wozzy 2020: everyone is playing standard arena thinking they will be MPL and products sell like crazy 2020: Wizards poops on organized play 2021: nobody cares about standard and arena anymore, nobody buys anything 2021: Wizards restarts organized play 2022: people restart playing arena and buy standard boxes It’s just a coincidence.

Why the negativity? Rudy, I will answer this question for you even though you don't seem to see it. There is no creativity anymore. Where are the good new cards? Why are we chasing reprints? Nothing inspired has come out of WoTC since Eldraine (ok MH2MAN you get a pass too). Every set is just rehashed or bad mechanics. Literal boxes of shit. Doesn't feel like they're even trying anymore. Lore is irrelevant now. Where are the novels and great stories? Can't do it, might offend someone. War of the Spark was so exciting. What's gonna happen to my baby, Liliana? I can't speak for investors or people that buy/sell sealed product but my group and everyone I talk with seem to have the same feeling. Your next video should be has WoTC run out of gas? Where are the NEW great ideas, cards, themes? Love this channel and you too, Rudy! Just giving my take on the state of wizard cards.
Magic isn't worthless because it's a fun game that I like to play. Why would I give a fuck if cards are cheap? I'll just save money and play my favorite game for cheaper. It's literally just cardboard values don't mean anything
I have always said they AFR and Kaldhiem were/are good sets to play. That’s right play. So the draft boxes are where it is at. There are sets out there that are not that fantastic to play but are good to collect. That, I think, is the difference and new sets should be looked at as play the game sets or collector sets. That makes the choice of draft or flashy. In a few years time, like a nice utility wine but at the same time rare, people will still want to play. Yes play kaldhiem or AFR and will pay more to enjoy. I also think that Bald Gate will be a set that people will want to play vs collect.
Did Streets of New Capenna really tanked? I didn’t saw any box openings on this channel, but on my playgroup bubble the set was a success. There’s still cards from it that we want but didn’t went down in price enough (Smuggler’s Share for ex)
Rudy, as wizards resets its plans after this vacuum, do you think they will look at what has been profitable for them in recent times and realise that it's double masters 2022 or bust for future products? Can we as consumers expect to see prices like these as commonplace for the future sets?
Baldur's gate is trash. EV is somewhere around $30-40 for a set box. There will be no reprint. Eventually people will fire sell baldurs gate boxes for closer to $50. They will have to reprint double masters to get any sales. They only have to answer to the shareholders just wait and see. All those expensive reprints in double masters will crash hard. Sell them while you can
My cards are only worthless to me when I can't find someone to play cards with.

Sucks
lets go brandon
You only lose when you sell. Stay the course.
@@KassSaiYaJiN if you die from starvation that’s a bigger loss lol.
"This is a serious video." Thanks for the laugh Rudy!
What pisses me off is that stores are not selling boxes and the prices don't tank in my country. The only products worth to buy are 2020 boxes that are half the price of anything that comes out today.
Give it another 2 years. Magic and Pokemon will be worth more than ever
If u have sealed product. New or old. Box it up. Tape it up. And bring back out in two years.
Why 2 specifically? Curious on your rationale
@@connorwills9862 the sealed product will be out of print and most sets increase in value once it’s done being printed.
The market cycle never lies
I could have bought diamond mox for like 60-80$ in 2016 now it’s $500 + it’s not ever going to drop!
Oddballs you didn't touch on that I'm interested in hearing about are Mystery Booster and Double Feature. Double Feature seems SUPER TOXIC, but also like it's the bastard child of such hated sets it could eventually be a goldmine.
Mystery Booster Convention Edition was doing really well last time I checked.
That ending was damn near poetic, inspiring even, well said
Pink Visor and Whiteboard-Videos are the best!
Pmsl .. love it Ruby. With enough cashflow you will rock it dude!
Love ya lots Mr.Rudy.
A calm voice of reason in what are typically unreasonable surroundings.
There's a fun juxtaposition of talking about power levels and value while standing next to a stack of sealed Fallen Empire.
I see the rudy with the visor I know it's gonna be goooood!
Gotta love the passion on display here.
Rudy Mode -> Legendary!!!
stay the course man i spend as much as i can and work hard we had our difference but i respect you more than anyone for being real and only real ones know you know your shit
WHERE WAS COMMANDER LEGENDS 1??????
What is up with that Phallic fountain
Oh yes thank you Rudy i love to learn everyday this is awesome
Rudy loves the special arrow and fireworks 😂
I liked Crimson Vow :( I picked up a lot of cheap singles from it : ) Kaldheim still surprises me because it was a great set, it had a really cool showcase style, and yet the value has sort of just sat there stagnated. On the plus side it hasn't tanked, and I foresee it only rising long term, its just a matter of by how much and how quickly.
Can't wait to get all the old school 93 94 cards I always wanted
MOM, CREEPY UNCLE RUDY IS DRAWING ART AGAIN!!!
i actually thought Adventures of the forgotten realm was going to be trash but really it was one of the best sets ive seen recently and i spent like 300$ just on singles a couple months ago
AFR is my #1 underrated pick. MID is #2. Just feels like there's a lot people haven't realized with the cards. I have a gut feeling the commander format is going to be what pushes it up.
At least AFR boxes weren't expensive. Baldur's Gate boxes are way overpriced.
@@Wft-bu5zc yeah
Good video, nice recap of all the products they've pumped out recently, so much of it is forgettable.
Last set I bought a fatpack of was ixilan... and some modern horizons boosters
Rudy when are we getting a best of outtakes & bloopers comp?
Damn I love the whiteboard videos such good info from these
2019: biggest investment ever in organized play from Wozzy
2020: everyone is playing standard arena thinking they will be MPL and products sell like crazy
2020: Wizards poops on organized play
2021: nobody cares about standard and arena anymore, nobody buys anything
2021: Wizards restarts organized play
2022: people restart playing arena and buy standard boxes
It’s just a coincidence.
Didn’t even mention “Double f^stin” 🤜 🤛……..I mean “feature”
5:41 - "... Although were using the Commander Legends name, we're gonna kinda fuck ya" 🤣
Edit: 6:15 "We're gonna have to make a very special arrow" 🤣🤣🤣
Edit: 6:24 "Fireworks" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love your take on this.
Rudy, ever thought about doing some voice acting for video games? I think you would make an awesome 'cranky shop keeper'. 😁
Magic isn't worthless because it's a fun game that I like to play. Why would I give a fuck if cards are cheap? I'll just save money and play my favorite game for cheaper. It's literally just cardboard values don't mean anything
The MTGFinance goons ain't trying to hear none of that "I'm here to have fun" talk.
About the ending of the video - of course You are right. The sun always comes up.
But i guess - not everyone got that much capital to buy everything.
Like it with your hair combed!
What happened at 7:27 in the audio? lol
Sell them while you can
There you go, Rudy, catch the falling knife! HA! Love you man.
In a blackout non electric sources if entertainment will be valuable.
need more of these types of videos
I see a whiteboard!!! Is there a visor!? Ahhhhh there it is...
I can shorten Rudy Poo's video. 2020 Stimulus money = Collectible's shooting up in price. No more FREE money = Everything is tanking in price....
Will definitely buy some AFR if you are able to get it!
