So that's how you made the guitars in our track so HUGE!! Brilliant stuff Doc!... We are releasing it in June, can't wait!! 🤘🤩🤘
Great job guys!!!
Dude… so great. I appreciate you helping us all make synths out of this technique!
Thanks Asa!
Couldn't the bass essentially be playing those synth tracks (with similar effects on the bass) to produce the same effect?
It COULD, but then it would just be a part of the baseline, instead of something that only exists to subtly thicken the guitars
The overall effect to the song would be very different
Thanks that’s very cool. There’s another trick. I often do, which is too double the root of the chord with Piano one or two (or Both) octaves below. Compress the hell out of the piano to take away the attack and it adds a great sustain underneath the guitar.
I love production hacks (for lack of a better term) like this. After having a great song to work with, It’s all about standing out from the pack, and there’s no rules. The pros do whatever it takes to make a great song, and we all should do the same.
I've been a fan of your channel since day one, great advice! But today I came across Goodbye June and The Warning songs which you had produced (I was not aware of that before!) and was blown away by the production before even knowing that you were the producer. Hats off, huge respect Sir.
Thanks Pete. I actually didn’t produce The Warning. My great friend and mentor David Bendeth did. I did work on the record though! Goodbye June I did produce and it was a blast. They are great guys and super talented. The album was doing great and getting really good traction and then Covid hit and ruined the momentum. I have very fond memories of that record and really love some of the songs on it!
I've been playing around with this concept after seeing Kain Churko and Mick Gordon doing something similar. 🤘🤘 Thanks for giving me more ideas on how to do it. You are the man. Easily one of my top favorite RUclips channels right now.
Thanks Nexus!
Howard Benson is known to double guitar parts with synths, but he's never shown how he does it exactly. It would be great is Spectrasonics did a special extension pack with all kinds of electric guitar sounds (including feedback loops, e-bow sounds etc.) to create these layers.
Yes I’ve worked with Howard several times and that is true.
@@BobbyHuff Cool! Reveal ALL his secrets!!! We won't tell anyone ;-)
Killer ideas as always. I believe you have also done a video explaining how Mutt uses keys to bring out arpeggiating guitars which was killer as well. Thank you!
Thanks Pete! Yes you are correct. This video is more about the dirty synths and big guitars.
@@BobbyHuff I dig it, some nice fat bottom gits! They make my world go round.
I LOVE using this technique. Makes the guitars so beefy!
Agreed Gene!
Very cool! Now I need to figure out how to play the guitar tracks into midi in protools…
So good, I had to watch it twice! Thanks Dr Bob!
I actually had a similar idea after watching Sylvia Massey's pickle and octaver tricks a few years ago. I got interesting results out of pitch shifting the fully re-amped audio down because the octave shift also grabs the high frequency fizz and pulls it into that slightly crunchier territory giving it some of that synthy quality especially with the right EQ pass filters. There's a lot of lo-fi analog synth territory to plumb from destroying guitar signals before or after the amp and mixing them back in.
Ive heard this trick on few of the Black Keys songs...great one Thanks Bob for pointing that out!
Check out all those flavors of Dr. Bob magic! Great trick- now you've got me thinking! 🗝️
Hahahaha Thanks Giselle!
The Mutt Lange Guitar Secret = Here is a Rockman FX, use it on all tracks, okey? :)
Your channel provides a wealth of information in easy to digest morsels.
Thanks Meghan!
Bobby, thank you for all of the amazing videos!
Thanks for watching man!
Pretty sure ZZ Top did this on Eliminator/Afterburner/Recycler. Great method!
Very possible!
Blown away. This is awesome
Every time you teach us more about how to be sonic sculptors! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Signed Michaelangelo.... LOL
Thanks Michael!!
Another hidden gem! Thank you.
Subscribed immediately.
Awesome! More weight, less fizz :) Mono is definitely our pal
sometimes... i use mono delay on vox occasionally to help
define stage depth. Rock on! bro :) 💚

I’m digging this idea. Way different video than i thought. I thought you were going to say to have ten guitar tracks stacked and blended.
Hahaha! Thanks Dana!
This is what I’ve been looking for all this time! Been a huge fan of your work and videos for a long time. The guitars on this video sounded amazing even before the added synth. Do you have a video on your process to great sounding distorted guitars.? I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
Some great sounds there that really fatten up the guitar. Do you think it might get in the way of the bass as it seems it might be going into the bass frequencies?..... cheers.
Great point. If the bass is playing a fill I will switch to the opposite octave in the guitar keyboard part so they don't clash.
Great stuff Bobby! I will have to try this technique out.... among the other great things you show us! Cheers man!
Thanks Junkie!
You know, back in the hair daze, I swore I heard what sounded like an electric guitar unplugged and miced uo (prolly at the 12th fret you know) but it was in perfect sync with the roaring marshas. And thought they must have miced up the guitar in a quiet room such as the control room while the amps cranked away elsewhere. - never tried it, what say you?
Great Job Man ❤❤❤
Great stuff as always Doc, Thank you!
Great stuff Doc. Thanks for your time!
Thanks Matthew!
Another great tip Bobby! The track sounds killer!
Thanks Mike!
Bob, Always a good one.
Heck yeah Bobby! That’s what I’m talking about 😜😜😜
Thanks Jeff!
Interesting stuff Bobby! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Red!
This is pretty badass
Not to say that I was doing that, but I have been doubling my guitars with a moog patch tucked under at times. I guess I'm not crazy😅😅. (Okay I actually am) Always love your content. Thank you
Did you play the synth by hand then render midi to audio? Or did you use the audio to midi feature then render?
Played by hand. Quantized it. Rendered to audio.
Wow, another great tip, thanx
Could you work on Mutt’s production for Britney’s “Don’t let me be the last to know” track?
HUGE gem! 💎💎💎🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Daniel!
Nice trick!! Thank you as always BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOB!!!!
Cool.
So cool!!
What do you charge for mixing?
sound advice 👍
Great stuff, Doc! Mutt must be calling you up for ideas by now?
Hahahaha! I think he’s just fine.
ANY relation to Mary?
I want to hear this song!!!
Sister Scarlet is the band. “Dreams Come Alive,” is the song. Out June 2!
One day I’ll be the first to comment…
Hahaha
Did Mutt Lange actually use this? What tracks and proof do you have? Or is this click bait?
Yes. I have stems of his tracks.
Dr. Bob doesn't click bait 🙄
@@viol8rmusic thanks! You are correct! I would never waste anyone’s valuable time…
@bobbyhuff comes with the receipts
Aww man,,, I'm gonna be the guy, lol... WHy do something we can't replicate live ? We all like fury in some songs, but when you add this, I would miss it playing live... So how does one reproduce this live and get he same results. Synth pedal get there? See man, sorry I had to be that guy lol... But I'm in if it can be reproduced, other wise I wouldn't want it, even though it really adds lol.
If you along with tracks it would be easy to add.
@@BobbyHuff Thanks Doctor Bob!!! Love all the things you show man! I would think most love working with you. You have some killer releases!!!
Yucky synth, but cool technique
Thanks... Ii think...haha.
I'm not convinced, Doc. This is what I would call overproduced wash which Def Lep and Lange are indeed the masters of. Thanks, bro.
It's music, not a competition
