Part 6: IPO...Just Kidding
WeWork had spent nine years chasing lightning-fast growth, burning billions of dollars, and expanding around the world. In 2019, the company reached a turning point: WeWork needed even more cash, and Adam Neumann decided to take his company public with a massive IPO. But suddenly, in the span of a few weeks, his plan crashed spectacularly. The almost-IPO flopped and WeWork became a laughingstock. In this episode, reporter Ellen Huet asks: How did the company's fortune flip so fast, and why didn't they see it coming?

😭 This podcast series had ended😂. Bloomberg please continue making series
Like this which covers years of research, reporting for other startups.
More seasons of Foundering are on the way, stay tuned!
@@business I've enjoyed this a lot, it's well put together and pleasant to listen to.
Congratulations to Ellen Huet and her team at Bloomberg. This was so good! Please consider doing more series like this with in-depth reporting on companies. They don't even have to be big scandals, just some deep insights.
At a time when business 'news' simply shills corporate interests, this series' storytelling from the perspective of the everyday person has been fascinating, inspired, and empowering. Good stuff!
I want SoftBank to front me $16 billion bucks.......I'm a Redwood Farmer and the crop will be ready in five hundred years or so but It's totally gonna pay off.
Hahahaaha this is hilarious
Buy a turtleneck and clothing like Steve Jobs, and says as many times as possible about "disruption", "reinventing", "reimagining". It worked for Theranos and Wirecard 😂
It may work, you are possibly thinking about genome modification to Costal Redwoods to just 1 year!!! Tell Masa this
{{ As you can see, the 500th decimal of Pi is 2. However, Pi starts with 3 which is also a digit. Thus, if you start at 3, then 500 digit is 1. In another word, 1 year instead of 500 years}}
“I’m listening” - Masayoshi Son
sounds like something masa son would be interested in
Go for it, trying reaching a stage where he will be interested in talking to you and then convince him. You sure you can do it? I don’t think anyone is stopping you.
The story of people dressing as Adam Neumann for Halloween and carrying Softbank checks cracked me up
Kinda sad for when this series ends!! Would love to see more
Was about to type the same comment and saw you beat me to it 🤪
There will be more seasons of Foundering coming - stay tuned!
@@business by when?
@@business just heard your EP 7 podcast and it's just AWESOME!
theranos, juicero, so much potential with this podcoast series!!!!!
Pure Food & Wine. Even Anna Delvey/sorokin & the banks etc which effectively backed her.
Next up, please make the Wirecard story 💜
I agree would be very interesting
Long story short, Adam got lucky meeting masayoshi. Masayoshi got unlucky meeting Adam 😂
Bloomberg 👍👍👍👍👍👍⭐
We don't work
Adam is a genius. No, not the good kind. The kind with 1.7bn.
Psychopath as well.
Love this series!!!
Adam Neumann, Elizabeth Holmes and Keith Raniere walk into a bar ……
Were there any survivors?
Lets go! This is awesome stuff! You guys inspire me to make content
Weldone👏🏾👏🏾... I really enjoyed this series. Thanks
The quality of this is 100!!
he actually said "We are the world's first physical social network"...
It’s hilarious to me; that these weasel words exist: that a “physical social network” is a _physical_ network and that’s basically having people around you which is a _community_ so he’s saying he’s the _creator_ of the world’s community. 😆😹😹
I thought cities beat them to that lol.
Adam, a conman met with Rebecca, a con woman.
Adam Newman, Elizabeth Holmes.. they all come in threes, who'll be the third?
Really good an well researched series
Quality content. It would have attracted more people even with simple static animation or photo slides though
It’s a podcast. I think the biggest part of the audience listened on audio-only platforms. A lot of podcasters repost to RUclips because they know most of us just have it playing in the background while WeWork.
MEWORK should had been the name of the company,
Is there an rss for an audio podcast of bloomberg quicktakes? When you try to look it up you find RSS feeds that ended in 2018
If only they hit the ipo I bet you they”d be worth 500billion now regardless if they was loseing money which is half the stock market lol
This guy is beating the shit out of his table! 🤣
Here I thought he was just a narcissist but the whole bit about his Messiah-complex takes the cake. And speaking of "cake", I hope he gets his just desserts one day sooner than later.
I want to be like Adam Neumann, a barefoot messiah preaching goodness, throwing parties and having millions by doing that!
He has over a billion to do this- & the houses….I’d be happy with a visitor cottage in the Hamptons as well as the Mercedes & Porsche (toy) cars their children ‘drove.’
What’s stopping you then?
Pls make this a series of analyzing shitty startup that the media loves
The problem is; they ARE the media! Bloomberg loved all these fraudulent companies (Wework, Theranos, Nikolas etc) and never stopped talking about them and elevating them to a higher status ('groundbreaking', 'innovative', 'disruptive', 'revolutionary' etc). As media businesses, they are not punished for getting things wrong (they make money from sales/ratings) and elevating them made more profits for them regardless how untrue it was! The media then make even more money when they ultimately collapse and are exposed as frauds; as nothing sells like bad news, remember!
@@guppy0112 o.O gg US media is scary
@@guppy0112 except bloom berg has always been pretty critical of wework, so you obviously haven't actually been reading any of their articles, just going off a vague paranoia about mainstream media
No CC?
As Scott Galloway said ... WeWTF!
Masabfslt betrayed after people mocked WeWorks S1 filing due to the discovery in the structure of the business and powers of Adam. Well if Masa had done Due Diligence instead of hopping in the car and doing the deal in 28minutes tryna act like a superstar he wouldnt be surprised
The title got me hahaha. What a troll
What is an IPO?
Initial public offering. When a company starts going onto the stock exchange.
Initial Public Offering. It’s when a privately owned company enters the stock exchange allowing the public to buy shares of the business for the first time. Not all companies become publicly owned, and I prefer to deal with the ones that are privately owned because I’m not a communist.
This guy is a sociopath just like other CEO's I guess that what takes these days
A dishonest Israeli?
no way.
fine milk
Not gonna lie, Adam is obviously a great businessman. And if you disagree show me YOUR billion dollars
There are also plenty of thieves on the run.
