Wolves have sacked head coach Gary O'Neil after defeat at home to Ipswich on Saturday, Sky Sports News understands.
The dramatic 2-1 loss at Molineux, which was followed by a scuffle that saw Rayan Ait-Nouri pulled away from the pitch, left Wolves 19th in the Premier League table.

Did Gary O'Neil deserve more time at Wolves?
No, he deserves a better club
More time ? 3 wins in the last 30 games ?
Nope. Not a chance.

I'm not a Wolves supporter, but how does a manager survive at a club that sells their best players but brings in nobody🤷🏽♂️
I don't know about tht
Agree
I’ve not got a clue what’s going on at my club. All the sales have been because of trying to keep within FFP regulations. But we have clawed millions back and I’m thinking surely we have gotten within the regulations? I do think O’Neil should’ve been given longer because the man is working with signing cheap scraps or the players that he inherited - those of which who haven’t already left. He needed a chance with a proper budget but our board clearly doesn’t think so anymore
We did bring players in but two defenders got injured and we had no cover. Two players we brought in are for the future but have played. O'Neil was all over the place.
Im a forest fan and hear that wolves want nuno back 😂 😂😂
As a Newcastle fan can I enquire if Sky will be showing the same concern for Gary O'Neils mental health that they are doing for poor old Pep?
Owners done him no favours whatsoever. Everything he was eluding to in his last interview was correct. Fact is, they keep selling their best players and not replacing them. Doesn't matter how good of a coach you are, if you don't have the quality of players required, its going to be tough. He alluded to which players are obviously the quality required. 2 seasons ago at Wolves you could of named 4 or 5 more than the ones he named, in terms of genuine PL quality players. If I was a manager, I wouldnt be in a rush to take the Wolves job unless I was desperate, tbh. From the outside looking in, it seems like the owners will happily sell key members of your side as soon as they see fit.
Kilman was replaced from within by an arguably better centre back, Mosquera, who'd been sent out on development loans and had a successful season at Villarreal last season. Neto can't be replaced, he is a completely unique player, but we signed 3 forward players, two wingers in Forbs and Gomes and a number 9 (which we were desperate for) in Strand Larsen. Outsiders are just regurgitating the same old rubbish O'Neil used as an excuse and perpetuated by the media. Fact check.
His last interview was self-serving nonsense. He said we'd done all we could when losing 2-1 to Ipswich. In the 2 matches since, those same players have shown that with a bit of organisation and not having misery guts Gary O'Fail talking them down every match, 2 wins, 0 goals conceded. So what he said was utter rubbish.
All those who wanted Nuno sacked...hows it going now? Nuno and some of the Players that played under him are doing well, Gibbs White, Jota, Jimenez, Traore to name a few. When the wheels came off under Nuno,we were in no danger of being relegated. Was just a rough patch. Now, we lose another good Manager that had both hands tied behind his back. Even if we manage to pull off one of the greatest escapes in PL history, we'll be back at the bottom next Season at Xmas if we've still got the same owners.
Spot on.
The players were all down to some dodgy link between the owners and Jorge Mendes
I’m surprised by Nottingham Forrest where did this happen
I’m a Brentford supporter. I love Thomas but one day I feel selling a player will be too much and we’ll end up
Like Southampton
There were hardly any who really wanted Nuno sacked.
I would honestly give Gary oneill a chance at Everton ,,he has had the rug pulled from under him at Bournemouth and Wolves. Sold best players with no replacements and expect him to do well. He never stood a chance. I feel for the guy. He is a good coach
Sean Dyche will keep you up, he's quality at it. When the new owners come and potential to take it a few steps higher then maybe new manager needed.
For now Dyche is man for the job, just took a point away from the Emirates.
😂
Bournemouth and Wolves improved once Gary O'Fail and his endless list of excuses for his poor management were kicked out of their clubs. Actually, yes, Everton would be good for him as it gives Wolves a better chance of staying up and Everton going down! But even though Everton are a bit of a shambles, I don't think they are that daft as to employ a serial failure hyped up by his mates in the media. Surely they learnt that lesson appointing Lampard?
I am sad it didnt work out for Gary. I am sad it didnt work out for Wolves. But it was inevitable. Unfortunately it ran its course and I agree what was said here by Darren Lewis. If you ask a car mechanic to fix a car with a spoon, regardless of the qualities of that mechanic your car will not be fixed. Gary needed to go for himself and Wolves but the issue is far far deeper.
Should have happened a month ago. We got no chance of staying up under Fosun.
GON had lost all judgement and authority. Players out of control, not performing, and now they need a good kicking. But let's not forget Jeff Shi and Fosun's role in this calamity. They also need to sack themselves. The question is now, who on earth is going to want this poisoned chalice
of a job ❓
Its a joke wolves kept him for this long. 3 wins in 26 games. 11 of those games were with these top players you all think we sold and even hen we only beat luton. Terrible terrible managment.
Hard done by? He played a system which didn't suit the players, changed it each week, played guys out of position and we have got weaker because of his tactics. Yes, the owners need a kick up the arse but we have a talented bunch of players who O'Neil seems to have lost.
... is the correct answer. As any sensible Wolves supporter who watched us become more of a shambles over time under O'Neil will know. It's no surprise that getting a manager who can do the basics and we have improved 500% virtually overnight. The negativity O'Neil spouted about the players for months was insufferable and he did it to cover his own failings. Bad judgement by the pundits who have fallen for it, too. SHows how little they know about anything outside the Big 6.
O'Neil lost the dressing room
You won't be saying that when Wolves are playing Millwall in the Championship next season will you.
No because it won't be relevant in the future 🤣
Kaveh is the college student who was writing 1000 words for a 2 mark Question.
Bro what that isn’t the managers fault that you sold all his best players like Neto and Nunez and more players and you never let him buy anyone else and you gave him such a bad squad, to be honest he should go to a better club.
Neto was injured constantly, Nunez wasn’t impactful at Wolves. You’re spinning a false narrative
Reminds me when MK Don's narrowly missed out on promotion. The board sold their best players and when they subsequently struggled the manager who did no wrong paid the price for the chairman's actions.
But it’s MK Dons so that was the best result 😂
Its Bloody Fosun that should be gone. They are killing MY club.
I remember when we got crucified for sacking GON last season, it was difficult to justify cos he kept us up, but I was never convinced by him and his style of play has a low ceiling
Yes the players behaviour showed there was plenty going on behind the scenes. That kind of behaviour is not what you do when you respect the manager 😢😢😢😢😢
Not Gary’s fault wolves sold all their best players and bought nobody good 😂
If the player's fighting opposing team ,instead of fighting for result i think the manager would be in a better position this morning.
Already lost by that point
Ten haag chance to be coaching to wolves is not high, ten haag still without coaching club
Ten Hag is too good for Wolves, he will be the next Bayern coach
@@Yow531 or maybe leverkusen coach
@@Yow531 Why Bayern. Isn't Kompany there?
Is it O'Neills falut that most of Wolves best players have been sold, maybe owners should own it and just sell up
Some of the blame should be on GON because of the results and the lack of discipline in the last two games after it ended, but I think most people commenting here are aware of the ownership situation in Wolves, there’s a lot of videos from last year that talks about why Wolves are in a downward spiral. I think Wolves have enough quality, especially in the attack and midfield to escape relegation but they need to act quickly
@@christophercamacho8074 GON took over a great team, that has been taken apart - Neto, Kilman, Nunes - the owners have lost interest , its hard to care when owners don't. Sell up.
@ I don’t think you’re understanding my point. 3 wins in 26 PL games is a sackable offense. I said that the owners should take most of the blame at least 75% of that but they don’t dictate the results on the pitch when GON has to be accountable for. No matter if you’re Pep or GON, 3 in 26 is shocking and you have to be sacked for that
@@christophercamacho8074 the problem is bigger than GON - if you think Periera will turn it around,, lets just keave it ther - club only going one way for me.
@@thebaz_dublin Still think that Pereira can't turn it around? Is that your final answer? Even if he doesn't, the fact is that O'Neil is an awful manager who pours out these lame excuses for failure and the media lap it up uncritically. Seems they don't like Wolves owners, for some reason, too.
Hard to see Wolves surviving, not cause of the manager but the downward spiral their owners have lead them into over the past 3 years. Would have to be one heck of an appointment to keep them up, and if the rest of their decisions are anything to go by I wouldn't be expecting much.
Another British coach gone. Will be interesting to see who takes the role.
Wolves Watford Bolton Reading Leeds Blackburn Sheffield Leicester Southampton where All good football teams once upon a time some of them very good
Should get Kevin Muscat. He is doing amazing things, and he knows wolves.
Serves you right for Muscat that
I don't think wolves have a better squad than where they are
Me neither.
@jeanlundi2141 Looks like you were both wrong. You have to take the nonsense spoken by pundits with a pinch of salt. They protected O'Neil because he's English and there's so few English managers at elite level. (none, arguably). Add on that they know little outside of the Big 6. Wolves player dealing is little different to Palace, Bournemouth, Brentford, Fulham, Brighton etc. The *all* have to sell their best players to the richest clubs. Yet they don't flop to 19th. Like them, Wolves have some good new signings, 3 Brazilian internationals and several other players who will attract the attention of the Big 6 know they have a real manager to improve them.
@@OrangeNash Wolves have quality. But so do other clubs fighting for the same positions. The PL is very competitive, as competitive as it has ever been in terms of quality players.
Expected to compete while selling their best players and a shoestring budget
So....Everton
Doesnt matter who is in charge with that squad. now you will lose a few whilst new Manager is "assessing" the squad.
This type of pressure while being a well paid millionaire would give me many nights of comfortable sleep knowing my fans will be watching the price of milk and bread. Chin up our kid take that car out for a spin have a few months off and have a good Christmas with those jo malone candles on jn your pool room
Who’s the favourites to replace him, wolves fans? No one standing out for me
It's been diminishing returns for Wolves year on year. Sell best players with no investment. Recipe for disaster.
Loved GON last season and gave us some great memories but ever since we lost to Coventry in the cup, its been downhill and he sadly had to go. However, he is only partly to blame for the position the club is in. 5 years ago we were pushing to break the top 6 and maybe even top 4 but the owners Fosun have systematically destroyed the club and turned an entire city and fanbase against them
Should have mentioned as well, I absolutely do NOT trust them to make a good appointment on the back of this. They want a manager who is happy with no money to spend which means someone with not enough experience to get us out of the mess we are in
Why is Jeff Shi not getting fired as it’s down to him selling their star players
not a surprise considering the results
The right move to make. No question.
A couple of years ago Jorge Mendes was gifting them players that they had no realistic chance of signing under normal circumstances. The whole thing seemed dodgy from the start.
Even the players are fighting each other.
But, the team has had a bad fixture list.
It’s the premier league, all fixtures are tough!
If you take cunha out that team that team is championship quality, what do wolves seriously expect here
That's sad...
Free Hee-Chan. He's their best player and he's not getting anything. He doesn't deserve to be in the Championship. Get him to Madrid, Bayern or Barcelona.
Madrid? Barcelona?😂He couldn’t even get a start in RB Leipzig!! He didn’t even score for them.
You’re deluded
War is over wolves fans
Gareth Southgate and Graham Potter are available.
I think the interview with Match Of The Day last night as well was the nail in the coffin.
Wolves should be appointing ten haag, it should be ten haag
Ten Hag is too good for Wolves, he will be the next Bayern coach
Somewhere in the North East, people were woken from their slumber by the sound of an Irish man cheering
To be fair to him, wolves did not do him any favours by not having replacements for outgoing key players
Its solskjaer he was in the crowd yesterday
To watch his mate Kieran McKenna. McKenna was a coach at unite under Ole
supporting ipswich ahahahahahah
OGS would guarantee relegation
@@adrianbennett3761No to OGS no better than Gary O'Neil
Ron Atkinson also made an appearance....
Albeit on the big screen at half time..,😂😂😂
Whoever takes over though. They still have the same players. The same defence.
Ur spot on even the game earlier in the season against Man U they were hard done with the goal keeper incident!
To quote Withnal "what forker said that!"
Feel sorry for him
The revolving door of EPL for British managers. Why can't the brits, with few exceptions, are so poor in managing and playing the game they claim to have invented, wrongly so, in all likelihood.
As much as I like O'Neil and think that he may well of found the solution to keep Wolves up in the end.....- the bottom line is Wolves were leaking goals for fun.
40 in 16 games is just outrageous.
The Ipswich winner summed it up yesterday didnt it. Shocking defending with your Gaffer's job on the line 🤷
As a Liverpool fan, i respect him much, hope he find out a better job
ps tbh,.he shd be sacked even 1:1 draw, showing top mgt never give him times again
He was bound to be sacked after the comments he made about his players after the match.
If you lose to lowly Ipswich who are one of the worst squads to ever grace the PL you shouldn’t be suprised to be sacked.
Taxi 🚕for Steve Copper 😅😂😎👍
I am not a Wolves but I like the way they play.
Dump ground three poor stands and the team an owners.
He's got big money in the Bank who cares 😅
I hope they appoint another person better than O’Neill.
3 wins in 25 , despite the owners not bankrolling the club , the results were simply not good enough . Ive been a fan of oneal , but hes out of ideas , and didnt learn from the set peice defending etc . The problem isnt helped by the run of fixtures that we have been 'blessed' with this season 😂, multiple dubious decisions going against us and lack of squad development.
Could be too little too late.
Wolves have got some very difficult games coming up and are already 4 points adrift of safety.
Jose M for Me - Proven Prem winner in Cups and Titles . Give Jose M a 3 year Deal . Jose also attracts from other Clubs in UK and Europe .
The inevitable has happened. Been coming for a while. But It needed to be done. Wolves are in utter free fall and they need a change to have any chance of survival in the premier league gary o neil will comeback stronger.
He's a very good manager. He'll be fine.
3 wins in 30 thats all im going to say
And he has been doing so well lately 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good. We’ll be getting relegated anyway but how this never happened sooner is beyond me.
Owners need to leave as well my team deserve better than this
Loosing again Ipswich was always gking to be the final nail in the coffin. The Team has let him down.
English coaching in crisis
White replacement theory
I knew the club was gonna sack him straight after defeat
Wheres' the investment? 2 Brazilian internation midfielders. A Brazilian forward who is currently one of the best players in the league. A young Norwegian striker. Ait Nouri, wing back coveted by many elite clubs. .. so on and so on. Ask Bournemouth fans, they know the truth too, that O'Neil is an awful manager. How he stayed so long, winning just 3 matches in 30, is probably because he gets a free pass from pundits who don't seem to have a clue about clubs outside the Sky 6. They all repeat his excuses.
Wolves board need to take responsibility why give him a 5 year contract at the start of the season … I’m not GON fan but should of been given time , they have a good squad and shouldn’t be near the bottom from AFC Bournemouth fan
Won't be surprised if Wolves get relegated at the end of the season.
Yeah it obviously beyond him no doubt
Of course, I knew yesterday was the final straw.
I really could have bet my head and house on his sacking
That's wolves relegated, then, a great club but a poison chalice
I think wolves is always an entertaining team and rooting for them in every game except vs my team.something is not right about players execution vs him.what happened to the Korean player?he was good😢
I thought he was the up and coming English manager?
Maybe he should’ve learned more about improving his team instead of exposing Big Ange Spurs tactics on Sky Sports last season….
He was living to fight onother day
I knew this is coming👌👌👌
I feel sorry for the guy, maybe a wage cut on these over paid premo's that need a reality bloody check!
It’s too bad that Shi hasn’t gone with him. Fosun need to sell up and find new owners as they have no credibility whatsoever.
Wolves waz a good football team when nuno edspirto santo waz managing them after tht there where total garbage
did it to himself with those comments after the game
Why??
Hope his ex players will be sacked for attacking staff on the pitch yesterday!
Should’ve been sacked 2 months earlier not had more time also Wolves need a Portugese speaking manager imo would get Pedro Caixinha
He’s a good manager the ownership took his players away. He will get another job deserves it. Southampton like wolves haven’t bought well. They amazingly made it to premiership but didn’t buy. David Moyes or big Sam? I think Southampton are cooked. But there are pieces with wolves. Ipswich I don’t see making it either. You have blow the bank and sign amazing players these haven’t really hence they are where they are
Thank the Lord 🎉
Just a basket case club
About time Ipswich Town had some luck blue army 💙
Sell best players again manager didn’t stand chance bc Beckenham Xmas!.
What did wolves expect, sell there best players and dont bring anyone else in has never worked for any club before
We literally did though. Mosquera came back from multiple development loans after a great season for Villarreal in La Liga to replace Kilman. Neto was irreplaceable but we signed 2 new wingers and a number 9 with the money we got for him. You're spouting the rubbish excuse from O'Neil without fact checking it.
Hopefully they get Moyes b4 TFG sack dyche I don’t want a dinosaur replacing another dinosaur
Jeff Shi is a joke and definitely does make it up as he goes along.
Wayne rooney won't be far behind...
