I am renewing my spring/summer capsule and this is very helpful. I love wearing hats instead of sunscreen because lots of sunscreen products are actually causing skin cancer. Some items I used to wear just got too old and I need to replace them. Sadly, I do not have local ethical stores and I am skeptical about purchasing online. I would love to see what you got already for summer/spring.
I'm inspired to do this after hearing some you tubers on the same philosophy I had always been conscious but you tubers have opened my eyes even more so time to do more for the environment , my self etc
So very helpful, thank you! I have found it overwhelming at times to get this capsule thing organized, as I was starting from ground zero really, but hearing you say that it does take time was a nice welcome relief that I don't need to have this all done by yesterday! You are very inspiring!
I also now live in germany, i do not have a capsule wardrobe, but last autumn i reduced a lot it using the 333project. I found more convincing having 6 months together, the weather here can change too quickly! One day is hot and the next is snow u.u
Really great tips! I've just realised that I don't have a lot of summer pieces, but I also have lots of things I've not been wearing....I'm not sure if it's just because I forget about pieces when they're out of sight in my drawers because I remember loving the same when I see them again, but I definitely wear way more of my hanged clothing than my drawer-ed clothing (even though it's folded konmari style so I can see everything WHEN I open the drawer...! ha). I don't actually do the capsule wardrobe (or, I guess, I have one single, small "all season" capsule...hah), but these tips are great for me to remember while I rethink a few things about my wardrobe. Thanks for sharing! :)
I'm exploring the capsule wardrobe idea! I feel that I already gravitate and wear the same things anyway but I'd like to make it more intentional. Great video!
I've loved your channel for a while now and I love this video! What you're saying in this vid really resonates with me as I'm moving forward on my journey to live a more minimal lifestyle/surround myself with only the things that spark joy etc. Have you read the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying up by Marie Kondo? If not there's this part in it where she suggests keeping all or most of your clothing unpacked/hanging up in your closet etc. regardless of season. I think her reasoning was pretty solid and I may leave a quote for your here after this comment, but the reason I bring it up is because I think leaving all of your clothing out instead of packing it away can really help with the capsule wardrobe planning etc! Because you can see all at once what you have with less stress/the anxiety that can come sometimes come with having to unpack what you've stored away! I think it would be especially helpful for the transitional period between seasons as well. Or those situations where the indoor and outdoor climate are opposites. For example that thick/chunky winter sweater may be just right in the middle of the summer when you're sitting in a super cold building! Just some food for thought. Also I highly recommend the book if you haven't read it already ^_^
I just started using Capsules by Cladwell. You have to pay $15 up front for three months, but once you're in there is a wealth of information about ethically produced clothes! You walk through setting a timeline for the capsule, making a color palette, and determining the kinds of activities you will do. I love how they encourage you to shop your own closet first, and then make a shopping list. If you have a pencil skirt on your shopping list, for example, they provide recommendations for websites that produce clothes that are fair trade, environmentally friendly, etc.
It might be new. I looked into Cladwell a little while ago and don't remember it then. It's actually what got me to sign up this time because I was getting overwhelmed trying to track down information about companies. Projectjust.com, which you mentioned in another video, has been really helpful too btw :)
Great idea to assess your closet and see what pieces you need, rather than just shopping and picking up anything.....(like me)...I have about 100 handbags....yet nothing to wear.......You are so organized! I admire that! Maybe you can help me....fashionista
I like that you give yourself some leeway when doing this. I know some people will stick w a piece that doesn't make sense just because they chose it in the beginning. It seemed impractical to me because following this is to help and assist you to figure out what works and what doesn't. I like your style~ :)
Thanks for sharing! I'm trying to build a wardrobe of basics that works for business casual and super casual weekends lol This really helped me think it through logically! I use pinterest for outfit ideas all the time. I am not at all good at making nice outfits, so pinterest is super helpful for me :-)
I've had some successful finds that I love wearing & have become new favorite pieces, so thanks for all your hard work sharing all this with us. I get inspired everytime I watch a new vid, it's so fun! I just need to find where I put that list of pieces I still want to add. Thanks!
I really enjoy your videos, they've made really consider where the products I buy come from and how/what goes into making them. I live in the UK where the seasons are becoming less and less conventional, particularly this time of year where you'd be expecting to be reverting to a spring/summer wardrobe but actually you still need a lot of the items from your winter wardrobe - resulting in your winter wardrobe being in use perhaps longer than anticipated. Is this something you've come across whilst living in Europe?
After the video where you about MUD jeans I bought one pear of them and recomended your channel to them so they would notice you made a video about their brand :)
Do you ever shop all season and not find what you're looking for to fill the hole in your wardrobe? Or maybe find it at the very end of the season and only wear it once or not at all, meanwhile really noticing that item missing all season long? How do you deal with type of scenario?
you're such an inspiration! I'm slowly preparing to start a capsule wardrobe this winter but I have a problem: I love dresses. Everyone talks about mixing/matching the different pieces in the wardrobe, bottom and tops... My ideal wardrobe would be made of dresses only. And then I'd just have to pick the shoes and bag/backpack to go with it. I hate wasting my time thinking about what I'm gonna hear today for thus occasion and that's why I'm considering a capsule with max 40pieces. Of course they can't all be dresses, but do you think it would defeat the purpose if like 60% of the pieces are dresses?
I loved this video Erin! Spring 2016's capsule was my third capsule ever, and I found it unexpectedly hard to put together, because I guess that I haven't been used to work with clothes appropriate for warmer climates in quite a while. I made a cross country move a few months ago, and I am still trying to figure out what can work for me now... This "step by step" video will be super helpful for future plannings and to make me understand what should I eventually swap in this actual one!! Ps: now that you have been using this camera for a while, how do you like it? I am thinking to invest in a good camera in the future months and I am looking for suggestions/recommendations 😊
Happy you found it helpful! I find spring really difficult too. I think it's the hardest season to plan for, the weather is all over the place! I'm happy with the camera! It has some great features but I definitely need to invest in a better lens which I'm currently saving for. The lens it came with it great for filming outdoors, but much too dark inside. I end up having to really mess around with the lighting during editing. So I don't know if I would recommend it unless you also wanted to buy an additional lens...
Erin I think someone has asked this question before, but how do you get rid of clothes? I have pants with holes in them that i've tried repairing to no avail, and nice shoes that I've taken to numerous shoe repairs and no one wants to/does not know how to repair them so they've been sitting. I hate throwing things away, but that seems like my only option.
Anything that is beyond repair I recommend giving to a textile recycling centre. Some cities have bins for textile recycling where you can drop clothes off, but if you don't have those try contacting your local thrift stores. Some will give clothes that can't be sold to a textile recycler and will also accept clothing for recycling and if they don't take the clothes they might still know of recycling centres near you. Good luck!
I donate the majority of items, some nicer or more expensive pieces I'll try to sell at a consignment store, and if there's anything too worn that can't be donated I give it to a textile recycling centre.

I'm Italian and I love your videos. I don't understand all your words, but the meaning of your thinks. Thanks a lot. See you next video.
Thank you!

Just created my capsule wardrobe! Documented it on camera too!

What a stupendeous idea to write in a journal what pieces you want to wear? Where were you 20 years ago? So glad I found your channel!
Your hair is sooo beautiful!

Hi Verena just found your channel 😊 I'm understanding things better now, thanks muchly X
Loved this! Very inspiring.
Your hair looks so beautiful!!

That's really exciting! Is it a new feature? I don't think they had that when I looked into it.

Saw you in the documentary Minimalism. It was awesome! Thanks for all you do.
Oh exciting! It's not out here yet unfortunately, I can't wait to see it :)
Really great video! Thanks for sharing!!

I agree! There's no point in keeping things that aren't working.
Thanks! :)

i love the sound of your voice omg
Really? Haha I still find it so strange listening to myself, but I guess we all sound different than we think :)

That's wonderful to hear! Thanks so much :D
Thanks for this useful and great video! You look gorgeous as always!
Aw thanks!
Could you make a video about repairing your damaged clothes instead of getting rid of them? ☺ i would love to watch it xx
I talk a bit about that and show some updates and mending I've done in last year's haulternative video ruclips.net/video/ys42Mb36DVw/видео.html :)
+My Green Closet that's great!! thank you, i didn't notice it 😊😊your videos have inspired me a lot 😊

Have you tried the closet space app?
Did you check out the ballerina flats from Ethletics?
Where did you get the cardigan you're wearing? I just love it!
Thanks! It's secondhand from the thrift store, so unfortunately I can't recommend a brand/store to find it.

If you love wearing dresses, have mainly dresses! You can always try it out and see how it works, if you need to adjust what you include you can :)

+My Green Closet Thank you so much!
I'm curious, how do you "get rid of" your cloths? do you just toss them, put them on ebay, or toss them in a donation bin?
I donate the majority of items, some nicer or more expensive pieces I'll try to sell at a consignment store, and if there's anything too worn that can't be donated I give it to a textile recycling centre.
thanks :) I have never heard of a Center like that.
How do you dispose of worn clothes? Thanks for the video!

My Green Closet Oh perfect! Thanks so much for that info!
Watched two of your videos now and still haven't heard your name. Why not welcome new watchers and introduce yourself in each video?
A lot of viewers actually don't like that and click away, people generally seem to want to get straight into the content. There's more about me on the channel "about" tab though :)
This is jus to much effort😞
