    I think you should make a video and post it regardless if you find one or fifteen sheds . It's about the adventure and the person taking you along for it as much if not more then the finding part... I miss the old days of froggin catching snappers trappin and then of course the rattlesnake and deer hunting videos ice the cake 😀 congrats on some great finds john!!!

    Nice find. I understand how your brother could walk right by it and not see it. I built a shed several years ago, was using a speed clamp to hold some parts in place as I built it. I lost a pad off the clamp, was pretty sure it was around that shed. I searched and searched but couldn't find it. Walked out there a few days ago and there was that pad laying in plain sight!

    We are woodlot owners as well and what you've described about selective harvest is exactly what we see in the 2nd -5th years of new growth. We cut a 100 acres of old beautiful Spruce out of a 500 acre piece that never had deer in at all. Cripes they are like rabbits in there now and the monsters that have moved in. WOW - we have never seen such big deer as we've seen the last 2 years. Absolute giants.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  Год назад

      We have a lot of spruce too. Almost 40 acres. We might cut them soon. They provide little cover now that they are sparsing out and getting mature.

    Me and the dog found a match set of a 10pt very similar to those in one of my food plots the first week of January this year. The buck was a huge deer I saw once in daylight during the rut. I'm guessing it's a 140in deer. The deer I have was easily 21in inside maybe 22 and carry alittle bit more mass. They will both be some big ole boy's next season.

    Something you said that I agree with is you can't let other shed hunters influence you. It gets so tempting to start looking when you see dudes posting antlers in January/February, but if deep down you know it's too early, don't do it. Just be patient.

  • @davidadams763
    @davidadams763 Год назад +1

    Very nice buck anywhere! Good mass, nice mains, love the points. The only thing holding it back from being a 150 is the Short G2s and a bit more spread. I think you are pretty much on with your spread number. So my guess is low 140,s. Also I think you are right to back off until mid March for your area. Winter is a stressful time for deer, we need to be mindful of that. Ever consider putting up some stands on the fringes of your legged area. Seems like it might pay off, especially for a late season hunt?

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  Год назад +1

      We do have one stand over looking the logged area. My dad used to hunt it before we put up the new deer shanties. The double ladder stand is still there and overlooks the area where the sheds were. But it just never seemed to produce. It seemed like most of the deer hung out near our foodplots on the opposite side of the property. I will set some trail cams in there next summer and see what's moving through.

    • @davidadams763
      @davidadams763 Год назад

      Good plan. We are working on where to reposition some of our cams to. Hopefully your cams will show where to re position the stand to. This big guy must have a bedding area somewhere and if you are not currently getting many photos of him then he might just be using a thick crappy part of the logged area. probably not much daylight movement except in the rut. Looking forward to what you find out.

  • @snipnickfesin
    @snipnickfesin Год назад

    You can measure the exact width of the spread using a little ingenuity. You have the antlers from the deer in the photo, you can measure the G2 or G3 tines and get the exact length of the tines, then by using your photo editing tools can apply that measurement scaled down to the antler in the photos and using that as a measuring stick you can get the measurement of the spread pretty darn accurately.

    Great Videos John. Greetings from Nova Scotia. It's great that the big boy is still alive. In my camp if my dad had a crack and missed at a tank like that I would tell the boys (especially if I had an assassin like Ron) he is off limits so my dad could get him next year. We've done that at ours. This year we have a cam shot of an absolute giant brown racked 275-300lb -14pt of which we also saw later at 250yds away in some balsams. Yes I have proof. I've told the gang he's mine.
    As landowners and shephards of our flock of studs we have to some privilege - right. It'll be great fun for pops next year if that guy hangs around. Get after Ronny! to lay off - lol. Godspeed John.

      I have in the past. If too much is detached from the skull it could hurt the deer next season but I've seen it and If part of it is smooth I'd say it would be ok.
