Let them dry out after you pick them, so they are easier to remove from the shell. Then toss them in a crockpot with onions and ham or salt pork. Mmmm.
I like to eat these young . . . just as pods swell a little. I eat them like green beans. A friend calls them black eyed pea beans. They are a favorite. I buy a bag of black eyed peas at the grocery and plant them.
Good video, Scott. I have sown a batch and they are all growing nicely. Will plan to sow more since I have some summer plants starting to finish up producing. Suggestion to get cheap cowpeas - if you are using it as a cover crop, go to your local Indian grocery store and buy a 5 lb bag for like $10! You have plenty to sow and plenty to eat as well. They are among the tastiest dry beans!
Great tip to sow at night! I water in the evening instead of morning so it keeps ground wet for longer time (FL) so it makes perfect sense to me.. I'm pulling mycukes this weekend and will plant some of the black eyes from the pantry.
That Phebe is something else 😂 where's the rat and she went to looking for it. Good girl. I just got my seeds in the other day and I'm itching to plant them but I know I have to wait til after that last frost date. Great video
My favorite purple hull peas!! How long does it take to harvest them? I may plant them but I live in Arkansas and I don't know if I still have enough time to grow them before the cold weather starts.
Scott, I love your channel and have learned a lot from your videos. I have a problem. I planted green beans in a 3' x 4' raised bed and the package was marked bush beans. However, after watching them grow for 5 weeks, I discovered they are pole beans. How would I go about supporting the plants. They are starting to go wild and I need some advice. The square foot gardening book indicated that I could plant bush bean seeds 3" apart so that is what I did. Consequently I have a lot of plants in that bed. HELP!!
hello, i am in Manvel not to far from you, I am a first time gardener as of May 2022, I have posted some videos also, but my question is what type of pipe and size is arched across the bed?
You said its okay to over seed occasionally because you can come back and thin. By that do you mean just snipping some off or are you relocating the sprouted seed?
Hi Scott , I'm growing purple hull peas in raised beds I'm getting lots of peas I have a question for you, what can I do with the hulls after I take out the peas other than feed them to chickens or cows. If you have a few suggestions they will be appreciated
I just planted seeds and did something I've never done before (quite literally the dumbest thing I've ever done) and that was adding a tiny bit of fertilizer on top of the soil and then watered. I planted purple hull peas btw. I very rarely use fertilizer and decided to use it this once. It was the miracle gro shake and feed. Please don't tell me I've burned my seeds?? I'm paranoid now. Help? Lol
Why did you torch the bees first? Don't you kill off beneficial insects and bacteria that way? And my dog responds to "where's the chipmunk", my garden nemisis
Torching is a very efficient way to kill of surface weeds and unsprouted weed seeds. It only effects the top half inch or so of soil. Doesn't harm the insect population.
Dear Phoebe, "Rats!? Where where!" Exit stage right! Gotta love that dog! 😄💕
Good luck with your cowpea plantings. Be well!
Never planted or have eaten this type of pea. It looks more like a bean. Looks easy maybe next season once I figure out how to eat them 🤣❤️
Let them dry out after you pick them, so they are easier to remove from the shell. Then toss them in a crockpot with onions and ham or salt pork. Mmmm.
Oh my, I started to laugh as soon as you said 'rat", Phoebe's head started swiveling around like " where, where??" 😅
You read my mind, I am about to plant some purplehull peas myself if it ever stops raining!
I planted some about 3 1/2 weeks ago so its time I sow more this weekend. Thanks for the reminder.
I just ordered one pound from Gurneys, $14.99. I'm looking forward to planting. I enjoyed your video. Thank You. Friday, 1/7/22
Scott are purple hull peas are doing good. You should have good crop. God bless y’all.

I planted some dried Blackeye peas for eating from Walmart as a cover crop. They are growing like crazy in Zone 7.

Planting mine today!! I'm going to try them in a bed amongst my okra and eggplant. See if they will grow under those plants.
Is that a rattle snake I hear in your video? I’m awake watching your videos back to back at 3 A.M. Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden.
Probably cicadas.
That Phebe is something else 😂 where's the rat and she went to looking for it. Good girl. I just got my seeds in the other day and I'm itching to plant them but I know I have to wait til after that last frost date. Great video
Thank you Scott
I planted mine yesterday; heirloom speckled variety
Just planted some today I got from the grocery store
I had to film my video early in the morning because of the heat. It’s way too hot in Houston to be out in the sun in the middle of the day.
My favorite purple hull peas!! How long does it take to harvest them? I may plant them but I live in Arkansas and I don't know if I still have enough time to grow them before the cold weather starts.
These are supposed to be 80 days. All cowpeas are really fast producers.
I just planted my cowpeas in starter trays and they sprouted overnight.

Hey Scott, can u do a video on grow hazel nuts, oak trees, coconuts, papaya? 😃
Sorry, I can't grow those easily here... except oaks, and they just grow whether I want them to or not.
My tomato’s have grown, they are very good
Morning! Will the peas bloom again? And produce more peas. Or do I need to replant?
If you keep them picked, they will keep producing.
LOL my dogs know the word " rat " too❤
I am harvesting my purple hulls now thanks to this video! Do you ever grow butter beans?
No, just grew some lima this year though.
nice video, thanks! Are you going to try and get away with a Fall tomato planting?
Nope. I'll be planting other fall crops that will make it through winter. Ordering seeds in August, not sure what yet.
hello, i am in Manvel not to far from you, I am a first time gardener as of May 2022, I have posted some videos also, but my question is what type of pipe and size is arched across the bed?
3/4 inch PVC secured on 12" lengths of rebar driven into the ground half way.
I need seeds for the purple hulls
You said its okay to over seed occasionally because you can come back and thin. By that do you mean just snipping some off or are you relocating the sprouted seed?
just plucking out the ones I don't want. They go to the compost.
xoxo
I am in central Florida when should I plant these peas, in sand? I am zone zone 9a also.
Now is a great time. :-)
Do PH peas only produce one crop or will they set another round if left in the ground?
I've had them produce a couple of crops, more like a really long set of pods.
Hi Scott , I'm growing purple hull peas in raised beds I'm getting lots of peas I have a question for you, what can I do with the hulls after I take out the peas other than feed them to chickens or cows. If you have a few suggestions they will be appreciated
Not much, I add them to the compost.
Cows luv the hull
are cowpeas the only beans that do well in the heat or are there other dry beans that can take it?
Lima’s seem to be heat tolerant too. :-)
My peas have vines on them and they are tangled up is that okay
Sure, that's normal.

Probably be just fine. Those purple hull peas will appreciate it.
@@ScottHead Ty! They seemed to really appreciate it. I planted 4 days ago and they've already sprouted. Haha Guess I need to just stop worrying. 😄
So they don't need any fertilizer?
No, but it doesn't hurt.
@Scott Head what fertilizer do you recommend triple 10 or triple 13
How’s the sugar cane?
Still small, I'll have a look at it tonight when I go to my son's place.
Why did you burn, the ground?
Flame weeding. Kills weeds and weed seeds.
@@ScottHead came here to ask this!! Didn’t see another video on it & just found you!!
How much does this much yeild?
Depends on if you pick constantly. It will produce three or four flushes of peas and maybe a gallon of dried beans for a 4x4 foot plot over a season.
How much is in a flush.....I normally just got them out of memaws freezer but she's gone now. I did try Google but it was no help 😂
My dachshund Max is on those rats
