Regression Manwha typically aren't that bad in the Harem department purely because as the MC regresses he already has one girl he loves and tries to be with/protect again.

@@Rob.N.Yeah, regression kinda trying to do the apposite of isekai. having a chad instead of introvert loser, having alpha female instead of cutesy moe girl and having specific love interest instead of full blow harem. Chinese cultivation stories make my brain hurt more and more everytime I read them. Isekai and regression at the very least have alot of good series, cultivation on the other hand follow the same story beat, the same MC, the same events over and over again and span it sometime to over 1000 chapters. The other genre in Chinese stories are fun though.

Orv is one of The Holy Trinity of novels, it's beloved for a reason, it starts off as a dystopian power up but as the story progresses you get to see a more complicated narrative and the mystery of what is to come. One of these mysteries being who is the author of the novel that Kim Dokja has read throughout most of his life and that now has become his reality. And in his journey to the end of the story will he find what he was looking for? Will he make it to the end with his companions? Will he finally get to see his beloved regressor find happiness?

    Here’s something to sell ya’ll.
ORV is about elaborating on the relationships between the readers, the story, and the author.
Its beyond the “trash”, a theme starts to form and a question began to be presented
For the people or the stories that you care about, what are you willing to do for them?
Stats becomes almost irrelevant as the new power system takes place. That being: Each of their experiences. Each new story builds up on their strength as a whole, and makes them all stronger. In the end, its not about just surviving anymore, but changing the impossible itself, by using all of what we experienced as proof that its possible.
Finally, the final trick of the story is that it blurs the 4th wall and YOU become a part of the universe itself.
Give it a shot, if ya’ll haven’t yet. Check the novel out too, its great and already finished.

What wasn't mentioned in Gigguk's sumary is that TWA isn't just a trashy novel but it's hell bent on tragedy. KDJ's goal is to reach the ending of the story but sparing the MC the 3k+ chapters of hell he has to go through to survive. Because, on top of the story being overall sad, the final chapter is just a promise to whoever has read up to that point that they are able to survive.

aka A Stepmother's Marchen. It is a legitimate contender for one of the best composed series I've read. The characters are interwoven and their impact and view on the setting shifts rapidly with the events she alters. It's more character-driven than most. The official printed releases are quite good too, reframed into manga panels instead of a webtoon.
The female-oriented series of the regression genre are being too easily dismissed, by trying to laugh these off on the whole. Besides Stepmother's Marchen, the three are really missing out on some great revenge-thrillers, which are better than the male-led power fantasies in the genre.

I think one of the big points of interest for ORV that Garnt misses in his explanation, is that Dokja is fairly confident that he only exists in the current timeline, which is the 3rd timeline in the original story.
We don’t know what happens to a world after the “protagonist” regresses, it could be erased, or it could continue on without the strongest human, regardless he’s fucked if the original hero dies.
However, we do know that Dokja probably won’t exist in other timelines since the first and second weren’t changed from the novel.
The fact that it’s the 3rd timeline is then a big deal, because in regression stories the 1st regression is typically either confusing or doesn’t let the hero know if it’s a 1 time use, but the 2nd regression teaches the hero that they can keep doing this, that they can afford to die.
So Dokja is using his understanding of the characters and the story not just to get close to people, get cool loot, and build a strong team. He has to do this while making sure the regressor never feels like he’s be better off trying again, even though this is coming off the back of a particularly depressing 2nd timeline.
    It’s real good stuff.

  • @SDREHXC
    @SDREHXC 4 месяца назад +51

Solo levelling is considered good because it was a lot of western audiences first experience with a story that actually utilizes the “gamer” aspects of the story and keeps it “gamer” throughout the vast majority of it. In a way it’s the first portion of sword art online but it stays that way. The levelling up and stats and being a class and all that stuff is integrated into the story the entire way through more or less even if the power scaling gets insane (much like it would in a game).
It’s definitely not groundbreaking in a sense that it should be critically acclaimed or anything but it does what I described very well and if that clicks with the reader then they’ll enjoy it quite a bit.

Really comedic, beautiful art and goofy faces. I also feel that it has a bit of an old school manga vibe.
On the total opposite side, A Man's Man is also great, but maybe more difficult to read for some. It's mainly about company politics, and has a lot of themes of technology, since all the story that i've read so far happens in the equivalent of Samsung of its world.

If Garnt is down for reading chinese light novels, there are really some bangers out there. My fav one of them is Lord of mysteries, which is also getting an anime/donghua adaptation in 2025. It's an Isekai with mystery (Duh.) and a little bit of horror mixed into it, plus the world building is just chef's kiss with a damn good story and a unique power system. The MC doesn't get op in like 0.5 chapters of reading so that's a plus point too. To those who are tired of unnecessary romance in the story, the story does not even have a speck of romance.
Well, I can't further explain the story without dwelving into spoiler territory so if you are interested from my description, please go and do check out the novel. The first book is completed with 1300+ chapters and the second book is ongoing I think at around 600+ chapters as of right now.

Indeed, Lord of the Mysteries, Release that Witch, and Guardians of Dafeng are actually really outstanding to the point that made me interested in Chinese novels. Chinese novels absolutely slaps, Tian Guan Ci Fu character and backstory is insane even if it does have romance that i skipped some parts, but the world building and philosophy is just peak. But i have to say donghua adaptation usually fails its novel counterpart.

"Father, I don't want this Marriage" is actually really good. It had parts in which I just couldn't stop laughing. But I would call that more of a shojo genre. While Japanese Manga are quite text heavy (the medium is focused on books) - Korean manhwa is more on the (colorful) visual side of things (because they are meant to be read online). And in both you see a different culture.

  • @name2865-n2y
    @name2865-n2y 3 месяца назад +3

I've finally figured out a way to explain Omniscient Reader Viewpoint for people curious, taken me ages to put it into words. It's not a perfect summary, but this is just what I think of it.
There's no romance, it's got plenty of action in it as it's a death game style, but it focuses very heavily on maintaining the bonds the mc has with people, but also how he makes himself and others suffer by constantly risking his life so everyone can survive and reach a happy ending, but he can't stop, because there's no way for even a single person to be happy without sacrifice, so he'll always choose himself.
It can be hard to notice it as it's rarely super obvious. People aren't bawling their eyes out all the time, it's mostly internally psychological pain, but after reading so much of it, I think they portrayed it really well.
The webtoon hasn't gotten far enough to truly show this yet imo, but in the webnovel, and still some parts of the webtoon, you can notice it.
*Also, genuinely, I think it has the most emotional ending out of any story I've ever watched or read.*
imo, people should read the webnovel first, then if they find it too boring, do webtoon and then come back to it, or do webtoon first and then do webnovel to catch up on what webtoon doesn't have yet.

Japan - Isekai (go to a different world, usually fantasy-esque, MC is often nerdy or an outsider in their original world, but those nerdy skills make them overpowered in the new world, and they usually end up with a harem)
Korea - Regression (go back to one's past with future memories/experiences/skills, MC's main purpose is to fix their past mistakes and triumph over their antagonists)
China - Transmigration (go into the world of a book, specifically one that the MC has read beforehand, and usually becomes a side character (that dies early in the book), an underdog character (that is suffering from abuse), or a villain (who will die by the book protagonist's hands in the future), MC's main goal is to change their circumstances to something better and not suffer/die)
All 3 countries have stories in all 3 "genres," but if you're asking what's the hallmark of each country, then I think this is the list.
Classic Isekai MCs usually start off wimpy and become strong.
Classic Regression MCs are usually smart and resourceful.
Classic Transmigration MCs are a mixed bag, some use their knowledge of the book to their advantage, while some still mess things up but it ends up being okay because they somehow changed the genre of the book with their actions (usually just by being nice(r) to the protagonist of the book).

Want something that combines all three big genres?
A Regressor's Tale of Cultivation has Isekai, Regression, AND cultivation, all executed extremely well.
This story details the life of a man who isekai'ed to another world with his colleagues. While all his colleagues have seemingly insane talent, having reached high cultivation and martial arts, he alone had to work hard making soap just to live....
He felt indignant, dying at mere age of 50, asking the heavens why he was blessed with nothing.
That was, until he regressed back to when they just isekai'ed.
From then on, it becomes a slow burn of one of the greatest novels I've read in my life.

I know we're talking about manhwas but orv and lord of the mysteries novels are so fucking good (and lout of count's family is great too but I just finished the first book so I think its bias to praise it HAHAGDHAGSD)
ORV has great characters and systems in play, of course there's dokja (i'll never get over the word play of his name) and how he actually handles all the scenarios thrown to him by the star stream and the constellations. It's scary to touch it at first since there is so much to actually 'learn' but the authors made a great job incorporating the needed information without info dumping (but I had to look up some mythos and historical names since I wasn't that well aware of some constellations and scenarios like the hwarangs and the korean peninsula constellations)
I think i'm somewhat a nerd or geek since I really liked the historical aspects they incorporated with the system. The greek gods, fucking buddha, there were movies on the theatre level, and more! If you're a wide reader or even a huge consumer of media then you'll definitely enjoy ORV.

Imagine it's like magi but instead of towers, caves with dungeons with different depth levels arose all over the world. Mc a kid that was born in a very deep level somehow got ownership of one of those said dungeons. He levels his dungeon up like a you do in a tower defense game. It's a pretty different take to thewhole saturated dungeon/tower/level genre, it leans more into the game aspect. I think the art is very cute.

Which btw it's a title that doesn't make sense cuz it's in Chinese and idk why they didn't localize the title better in English but it's actually a pretty decent one

I hate the fact that “regression is like rogue-like” is so accurate. This feels like cursed knowledge.

Fantasie of a Stepmother is actually pretty good. Brilliant art, solid characters and interesting plot. Highly recommend 10/10

The thing about manhwa is the solo leveling rype manhwa are just action power fantasy but there are genuinely good onss like the devils boy which are more story based or leviathan is goatwd most people don't actually read the good manuwa cause its not shitty power fantasy

Gigguk forgot to mention the part about who the regressor is on ORV. 🤣
ORV's MC(Kim Dokja) reads a regression novel called Three Ways to Survive a Ruined World, whose protagonist has regressed more than 1,864 times.
