Louis Rossmann I’ll live in the uk watching your vids you are amazing keep up the good work and thank you
That's the most entertaining instruction video I have ever watched! Thank you. (It was enlightening, too.)
lure lock syringe blunt tips
I haven't done component level repair in over 20 yrs. I find it amazing how you guys are able to work with surface mounted devices.
+Douglas Brown Hot air nozzle and fine-tipped tweezers. Magnifiers and microscopes also, if necessary.
ALSO LOTS OF FLUX.
And the stencil is clearly key. Good thing a machine shop can manufacture those.
Nearly seven yers later, still a work of art, Mr. Rossmann...
"I think this is a sexy set of balls." - Louis Rossmann, 2016
Don Francisco this should go on wikipedia top 100 quotes xdd
Matron! Take them away!!
Mrs. Chokesondick: "Present them!"
When it gets cold around the balls it's gonna contract. Louis knows what he's talking about!
There’s just something about the sound of a shop-vac and Louis talking that is soothing to listen to.
i totally agree with what you said about jumper wire at the beginning of your video i have repaired many a dead piece of electronic equipment by using jumper wire. manufacturers will just tell you it cant be repaired so they can sell you something new.
I bought some Amtech flux from Louis a couple of weeks ago - "he's got the good shit...". After dealing with Kingbo and the Chinese knockoffs, getting my hands on the real deal has made my work so much easier. No doubt that this solder paste will yield the same results.
+Kevin Katz Glad to hear it!
There's something really hypnotizing about the way light catches on melting flux. 5:20
I do SMT rework during semester breaks at an EMS factory and I really like you videos. In fact, I'm playing with the idea of offering repair/modding services myself. Not for Apple products, but in general. Game consoles maybe. I'm fairly good with tiny ass SMD soldering and hot air rework. But it doesn't matter how many of your videos I watch, I'm always grossed out by the obscene ammount of flux you use on those boards. I love it! :D I tried it too, it works great. It's just disgusting and a mess to clean up when you're working on brand new boards fresh from the reflow oven and you can't just toss them into an ultrasonic.
watching smd reballing/reflowing is so satisfying!
4:40 its not the value of the jumper wire louis, its the efficiency and knowledge u utilize on fault finding. we get paid based upon that man. u r my hero, from far away in INDIA I learn macbook motherboard repairing from u and earned my living, u r my guru.
You want stainless steel Leur-Lock dispensing tips.. Not entirely sure which gauge you want, but 18 gauge has some difficulty sucking up VG (Vegetable Glycerin, for my DIY vaping liquids hobby), but can dispense it decently with a bit of force (similar with 20G) - which may be what you want for solder paste. I got all mine via Ebay in packs of 12 for pretty cheap. For reference.... I think 8 gauge is the widest available -- and also practically all, if not all, syringes are Leur-Lock or Leur-Slip, with both being the same size and all, but the 'Lock' version has the screw-type connection points to, well, lock it in. :)
To cover your initial bases, I'd probably try a pack each of 16, 18, and 20 gauge - they're cheap enough (~$6-8 each).
you might know this by now but maybe some else doesnt but solder paste tubes and flux tube needle connections are called "luer lock"
Referring to the 17 minute mark. Does that syringe use the luer lock connection for the needles? You can get blunt needles of various gauges off Amazon and Ebay, and there's a good chance you can ask a pharmacy or a hardware store with livestock supplies for needles.
Look up luer lock blunt needles. They can be slipped or screwed onto a syringe.
Louis is the best teacher... i love you video sir... from philippines
DAMN!!! that looked good... you really know your balls
+Douglas Brown Thank you!
The mother of my friend was back in the day a home worker for an electronics manufacturer. Her job was to assemble little coils onto a core and attach the wires to the throuh hole leads. The company gave her a little pot with integrated heater, where she melted the solder (Pb) and diped those prepared coils in order to solder them. She was very fond of her work, because she got payed per pice.
Now the woman has throat cancer, have got her larynx removed.
And out there someware lives happily her former boss who is responsible for all this.
+Louis Rossmann For your needles go to All Spec's website and search for "loctite dispensing needles" Just look for one that is the same color as you've been using... the color correlates to the wire gauge of the needle. CML Supply on Amazon also has a dispensing needle assortment available.
22:45 "And my stencil just got sucked up in my air filter. Great"
It's these little things that honestly really bugs me.
Hey louis, just wanted to let you know that LinusTechTips was talking about one of your videos on the WAN Show for Jan 22nd of this year. It's at around 17:50 in the show
+GlaciatorGaming Shame Linus did not mention Louis directly would have been great for this channel.
+GlaciatorGaming I found it! Thanks.
+ASTRO MAN Ehh I'm not much of a social media/marketing person. You can tell, people don't even remember my name!
+Louis Rossmann Regardless of him not mentioning your name I still ended up finding the video and i'm falling in love with your videos. Keep it up!
+Louis Rossmann Your work speaks for itself should do ok on your own :) especially being noticed by a big RUclipsr.
With other channel promotion seen many smaller channels get bigger from recommendation from other big players on youtube.
if you keep your channel straight and to the point as you already do, you seem to have a "grounded"/pun philosophy and a no bullshit attitude your marketing is fine :)
Hi, Louis. the needles for the solder paste: dentists throw them away all the time as they empty the ceramic syringes for tooth repair. (source: it's what I use..)
Thanks for this video Louis Rossmann.🐈
Hi Luis from Nick, You are the best, thanks for fantastic explanation, sorry for question: F2117LP20H RVR is the same or not F2117LP20H V yes V? Thanks you are the best.
Sorry if its idiot question's.
I see often syringe flux but without nothing to push the flux in the needle. So what you use to push the flux in the syringe ?
Also what is the temperature of your working station ?
And what temperature of your iron solder with wick ?
Since stencil are expensive (we can't buy all of them) does exist like general stencil we can buy ?
Do you think you can clean your stencil in ultrasonic cleaner ?
Really appreciate you share your knowledge with us.
Share is so rare today and even rich want make sharing criminal.
Thanks for all your teaching.
I'd say you are really freaking good on what you did. Hats Off..And those equipment especially that scope is just one of dream, than just using a magnifying glass the ruined my entire eye as year passes by. Just before I have a 20/20 vision on what I do. But now, I can't do that stuff anymore. I can't see a damn thing smaller than .5mm of a ball..
Another great video Louis, I start to think I should try a board fix myself.
Question, wich is why I want to try myself: If I have a special board, no laptop motherboard but a special gameconsole board. What would be a reason not to help a customer replace a bga chip that he also provides, offers whatever money you need for it and atleast align it the same way but if the board is bad or chip, doesnt matter.
I have some clues but why would most repair shops dont take this risk? "simple" "southbridge" replacement, customer even has the chip from a donor. and it doesnt matter if the replacement doesnt work. (I hope it will, but ill take the risk)
Louis, sometimes i wonder how much you would save a year if you didn't use so much damn flux lol. good video, and a very clean reball
more flux = more successful jobs = more money and less bad reviews from clients
The needle looks a lot like the ones that come with ink refill kits metal pink plastic connector to go to syringe tip. Also medical supplies stores used for irrigation of wounds if you were still interested
Ur videos are clear as crystal..I am an beginner could post a video about how to know the path in a pcb or could you send a link for a video that it tells you about path of a pcb
Best video I've watched all week. subbed 4 life.
Gotta wonder if there is a way to mark the board before taking off the chip. Or maybe a cold stencil. But it obviously positions itself due to capillary action, equalizing.
Would you even think about trying this lead free?
LMAO! "I tried to convince them to sell it in these..." Like he's got so much pull with the manufacturer that they made a special size for him. This size of tube has been on eBay for years.
Very classy, trash-talking the competition, as well.
I do appreciate the tutorial, though. I ended up liking the tutorial, despite my initial comments. Thank you, sir.
I can help you find literally anything on the internet.
Little rubber squeegee would help with applying paste.
Fine needles are available on ebay.

You'd be surprised at how easy it is to deal with US manufacturers in this way! Especially if you're willing to provide/deliver the cartridges. SMT used to provide their AMTECH 4300 series pastes to Howard Electronics in 10CC syringes many years ago, it's likely that they still have the facilities to fill these types of cartridges but they don't normally offer them as a product for purchase
Another case; I was able to obtain consent from a US plating manufacturer to resell their plating chemicals in small vials for hobbyist use, even with my own label attached to the vials; I barely buy a few hundred dollars worth of gear from them a year!
PodeCoet In the United States, you have a legal rights to resell most things under your own imprint, without consideration of the company you buy it from. Chemicals are not particularly protected, unless you need licenses or permits to handle or transfer them.
It just isn't economical to deal with US manufacturers when the chemicals are dug out of the ground in China or India, processed there, and shipped to my business cheaper per kg in small quantities than I would pay a US company for the same in bulk, since they are sourcing it from the same people.
Is using solderwick and dragging it instead of dabbing it better? A lot of you tubers only suggest dabbing, what’s your take?
Do you keep the solder paste in the fridge when you’re not using it or do you just leave it on the side?? Does refrigerating it make it last longer???thanks jay
If anyone is looking for a Jig similar to what Louis uses around 9:59 , keywords such as Reballing Station, fixture, jig, stencil holder,Universal BGA Reballing Station, Helped me to find similar devices on Aliexpress and ebay. I know, mosta re chinese but they work and they are available. I hope this helps.
I've seen some of your videos, and suscribed too, I understand everything but I don't know WHEN the bga is soldered!! How or when do I know that's soldered??? Do you have a video on that? Thank you and learn a lot on this channel. Regards from Buenos Aires city, Argentina
Louis where did you get the syringe for the Amtech paste? I have that same solder paste but cant figure out how to get it out of the tube in came in. I guess it takes a syringe to load it in . Beats me. Show us how to dispense that paste please.
hello louis can you tell me whats the temperature you use soldering iron plz
Good video can you please tell me how much degree is Hot airgun station and soldering iron.
wow i didn't know the solder paste turns into ball solders. Brain wasn't working haha. Thats cool. I want to do this just so i can feel the satisfaction on working on my own shit and fix my own stuff, not making money. I'll still buy what you have just to make it work perfectly. Also noticed the balls don't stay stuck to non adhering pads. So good :D Learned couple things xDDDDD Was so used to how everyone else reworks bga parts by throwing balls into stencils
23:25 what is the chip die holder called?
Also do you know if the soldering balls are better or the paste overall better in longevity because its a paste and so on other than the benefits of it being easy to apply?
Heh... that's the second time I've seen something get sucked up into your airfilter. At the risk of belabouring the obvious... have you thought about putting some screen mesh, like window screen material, over the intake nozzle of your filter system?
Anyhow, great video as usual. I couldn't tell if the audio was still not synching properly on this one.
ETA: Yep, audio is slightly out of synch. This is obvious at the end of the video.
+TinselKoala The mesh gets owned quickly. I'm not sure how exactly, but it never lasts long. When the mesh was there, it wasn't fine enough to keep the tiny things from getting sucked into the air filter.
Not 100% sure but your syringe tube might be from an inkjet cartridge refill bottle ! Here in the UK we can cheapskate it and buy little bottles of ink to refill the colour cartridges on our printer and save a little money. The bottles come with these long narrow tubes. for pushing down into the cartridge. You then squeeze the bottle to force the new ink into the old cartridge. It works for one or two refills before the insides fuck up completely and you need a new cartridge.
I would like to buy the stand for reballing smc, I look in the list you have indicated but it is not present, where can I find it? best regards Daniele
Louis, why don't you use your BGA rework system to align and place the BGA chip ?
hi Louis, what you're doing with the Mac-Stuff is just amazing (or I'm simply not able to find the right word for that..).A very - for you - simple question: the SD-Card reader on my MacBook Pro (2012) doesn't work any more (I simply put the card into the slot=>no reaction). Is the card-reader easy to build out and in, or is it a solid part of the mother board, means, it's not that easy to replace it?Thanks for your answer.
+Andy Wawa Soldered onto the board. The issue will likely be with something but the card reader.
Hi Louis, thanks for your answer. I got the Mac from my brother-in-law (a very heavy smoker!) and the card reader was simply as dirty as hell. So I took an old SD-Card, a very thin but strong piece of my wife's old shirt, wrapped around the card, took some alcohol (as you always suggest) and push the card into the reader (nothing to lose should I break the reader...). I repeated the action 4 times and: success!! So as you said: ...something but the card reader, you're right. Thanks for your help!
Hi! What kind of clean paper did you use for the clean? Thx
Awsome video again as always mate
what did you use to clean the stencil of extra solder paste, alcohol kleen wipe or dry?
I have a question, where do you buy your gpu and so on and so forth stencils? anywhere places sells all types for everything out there? Lets say a Gtx 780 pcb for the GPU die itself? or maybe a specific raid card?
I've watched all these videos, but in the end, I couldn't find the answer to a question that might be stupidly simple. What is an SMC? What does it stand for?
Probably luer lock standard blunt needles. Of course you can buy them on ebay now.
It strikes me that these stencils you could get manufactured from a local machine shop. Chances are they'd be able to make a little jig for you to fix the chip and the stencil in the correct position, too. Should be child's play for them. Just give them a pattern or a 1:1 photo, and you should be set.
Hey Louis, did you end up figuring out where to get your dispensing needles? I used to import them in quantities. Happy to send you an assortment at no charge.
The needle in the video looks like that of what MG Chemicals includes for their syringe flux. I have the needle for it myself.
Louis, i know this is old video but about the tip of the needle 17:15 its seems like a LUER-LOCK tip. idk if you resolved that but just in case.
EEVBLOG FORUMS is the best way to get your questions answered.
+kingoftaurus eevblog forums is the best way to get an 8 page thread posted about why you're an asshole www.eevblog.com/forum/repair/rossmann's-repair-videos-using-tons-of-liquid-flux-for-no-apparent-reason/?all
Some people in general are just assholes. Can't focus too much on the dredge of life, it'll bring you down with them.
Is that a special type of tape you use to hold chip down- not listed in your equipment used
Its kapton tape, they are graded for high temp.
Can you make a video on how to put the syringes together? I can't figure it out.
Maybe you could somehow mark down (white marker?) the position of the original chip?
26:15 You can mark the board with old chip on it
Is that paper towel Louis uses to clean off the excessive paste? Anyone? Thanks
Hi Louis, when will you have these back in stock?
Whats the clamp you're using to hold the chip for reballing?
33:32 20 seconds of pure gold
where do you generally buy your donor boards?
What temperature was the air set at to take the SMD off at 04:21?
Hey louis, that claning cloth is static safe?
Louis.. If your syringes use the threaded end (most flux/pastes do)... Try these 'Luer Lock' tapered tips (linky below).
I tend just to buy the blue nozzles (0.4mm) for flux and paste, then if I need more flow I just trim the end of the nozzle a fraction instead of having all the different sizes.
www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=luer+lock+tapered+tips&_dmd=2&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=luer+lock+tapered+tips&_sacat=0
You can buy this needles in pharmacy store!
The Dutch Boy taught you well!
hi louis where did you get the stencil
Bonjour! :-) what is your air filter please?
Cool. What is SMC?
Are you able to point me in the right direction for tubs of the flux and solder paste? Like lots of? I’m in the uk but can import via my USA address
can the holes not be covered with high temp tape to keep the solder balls from liberating themselves?
+Douglas Brown Then how would you heat them? This comes out like shit going into the oven for some reason.
I guess I was figuring conductive heat transfer from the top of the stencil transferring down to the pad. But that's why you are the pro. thank you for the reply and the videos. Edit: Not using oven but hot air gun from above.
What's the outer diameter of the needle on the syringe you're using ?
I might be able to help... I'm using them to dispense flux...
+Tim E I wish I knew!
These are the ones i use. www.amazon.com/Kendall-Healthcare-61202348-Monoject-Needle/dp/B00PP92GRG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454773740&sr=8-1&keywords=monoject+blunt
RE: jumper wires on boards.... Do they have any clue how many FACTORY items come out with bodge wires on them? I'm a huge fan of tear down videos and it never ceases to amaze me what manufactures have to do to get products out. Even looking at 6 figure high-speed camera tear downs will find bodge wires. Yeah, uh huh.
+Tech Gorilla The SSL J9000 had a huge green jumper wire on every channel strip from one side of the board to the other. :-)
18:10 This might be totally not relevant anymore 2 years later but a lot of these thingies are easily sourced via aliexpress. Just smash in some keywords that might match what you are searching for. Standards in china work a little different, usually its just the right mixture of keywords that define an item. No DIN standards or stuff like that.
Needles for syringes f.e. are usually the same and you just search for dispensing needle and get a f* ton of different needles that will likely all fit any of your syringes nicely. Same goes with other parts.
another great video.
thanks.
what is the name or model number of wick wire you use?
As far as the syringe goes you can find out the gauge of the syringe it's the same as any other awg and then find a medical supply store that has that syringe gauge. You can use this chart to figure out the gauge, but they're all pretty damn close especially with what you're trying to use it for. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/28/Gauge_Chart.pdf
Perhaps you could tape a small section of nylon screen in front of your air intake with duct tape. That would prevent things getting sucked in the intake. That said, I laughed out loud when that happened. It's the second thing I have seen fly up that tube.
nice video
When i dont have those kind on needles, i go to the drug store( sometimes they are not willing to sell me because they think that im drug user. ) and buy the biggest ones they have. When i come home i cut off that sharp part and it works (for me).
how to manage air for resolder ic ?
Hello Louis! Thanks for your videos. Please, provide legend for Portuguese (Brazil). This will help us Brazilians. Thanks.
17:18 I can send you a few new ones, you just have to tell me the length and the diameter because I watch what I'm down to and comes closest :)
Can I pull an SMC from a different donor board when is uses the same chip?
Beto Larski if the chip is exactly the same it will be fine.
Have you tried Amtech LF-4300-TF? Once you try that you never go back.
Hi, Just so you know the the shop "https" link has an expired ssl cert. May put some people off on the first click.
It's a "Blunt Tip Needle" ;)
Good job bro!..
Go to the junkie needle exchange for those tips? HAHA That was my wife's suggestion, she in a nut case.
I like, subscribed!
+The Radio Shop thank you!
+Louis Rossmann You are welcome. Found your channel through the EEVBlog forum. Had to see what all the fuss was about. So a few Saturdays while in the shop and not recording my own videos I put you on the 40 inch monitor and been watching ever since. Thought it was time to subscribe. Our work is similar. You work on stuff that others have messed up and have unobtainable parts and no support, I work on vintage communication radio and test equipment, some that has been butchered and no availability of parts. So I relate to a lot of what you do. Keep up the good repairs and commentaries, I enjoy them.
excuse my ignorance but why isn't it possible to test an smc by just pushing it on the board? like why is it necessary to solder on the smc before testing it. thanks
+Ethan Chow When I rip it off the donor board I have to reball it anyway so it will make contact, so after all that might as well solder it on.
+Louis Rossmann oh that makes sense.
Pray to the dancing electric fairies bro....
I did this on a 44 x 44 mm bga works awesome as hell, btw the flux you sell on your site louis works awesome fuck playing with balls
Hi, louis
how to get the SMC reballing stencil and the other macbook logicboad components ?
aliexpress
amazing !!!
Earned my subscribe once he said "those people are some of the most ignorant fucktards in the consumer electronics repair business."
