Later than intended, here's a story for Boxing Night called "Boxing Night" - a spooky tale by E. F. Benson. Hope you enjoy! EDIT: if anyone wants to listen to an authentic pre-WW2 Sussex/Kentish accent, check out this video: ruclips.net/video/5S8JR4eJAXA/видео.htmlsi=Sg9AS48awmcd7w27 (around the 5 minute mark). To me (from Southern England originally) there's not a lot of difference between that and what you'd call West Country today (not easily distinguishable to the modern or non-native listener at any rate).
Hey, I'm with ya there. Haven't turned on a TV in 11 years and couldn't be happier about it. Plus, the ads rot people's brains and make them gullible. I don't get ads on RUclips which is worth the $15 a month. I go to my parents house, and they have a very full cable package, but there's nothing I'd watch. I did watch Shaun the Sheep over Christmas with my niece and nephew, but that's the closest thing to broadcast TV I've seen in over a decade. Good riddance. Happy New Year to you as well.
@@jackyhawkins1895 TV is now mainly my husband’s thing. He cannot get why I do not need it anymore. It’s so much better experience to be able to find quality entertainment on ones time, I say.
I have never read/heard this E F Benson story and I enjoyed it very much. I found myself admiring Ellen's stoic courage as she carries out her act of mercy - and how satisfying is the ending!
Well said! Yes, you might expect the weaker of the two sisters to let the soldier in, but this story is about the courage of doing the moral thing even when you're scared. I liked that about it too.
Tensed the whole tale long, I dreaded an Appt in Samara outcome but was delighted at the happy ending🎉 uncle Alfred’s soggy relict included. Love the sound effects as always too. You’re one of the few narrators that can do women’s voices without sounding like an ass. In fact, I find your women’s voices delicious
@@juliadia007 Thanks Julia! Glad you liked the women's voices. Their accents, as other commentators have noted, may make me ass adjacent 😆 but, thing is, I have one rural English accent that I use from Cornwall all the way up to Norfolk 🤫
Thank you Candice. People who like the accents get a free slice o' cake and a cup o' tea. Here's yours: 🍰🫖. Everyone else is dead to me. Yes, I'm having a lovely time, thank you. Happy New Year to you and yours! 🥳
This is one hell of a story. Great pick and narration! I've never seen a thief dealt with like that. This had me chuckling. What a great story! Happy boxing day! Thanks!
I got blasted Covid for Christmas and am now in the boiling/freezing insomniac stage! 🙄 This was a lovely surprise, well written and better read. Thank you ♥️♥️
Jasper, you've done it again! Edge of my seat storytelling! I so hoped for a cheerful ending! And I suspected the real burglar was the miserly Uncle! Happy New Year and Cheers/Thanks!
E. F. Benson! Hooray! Thanks so much Jasper. Your narration melts the world around me. My mind's eye is quickly transported as I bustle on with the clearing up. I can never wait until bed time. I wish for you a happy, healthy and satisfying new year to come, and again, thank you for sharing your talent as a curator of worthy stories and weaver of dreams. 🙏💖🎆🎇
Those *Benson* brothers could write some horrible & scary stories; for example, *Basil Netherby.* They were talented *E.F.* & *A.C.* . For me *Basil Netherby* is right up there to scare the hair off me just like *A Warning to the Curious* by *M.R. James*
Jasper could tell any story, and I would listen to it. Listened to this twice this evening over two fine smoked beers. I really like this story! Gave 'em the service rifle and bayonet. Great ending to an excellent Christmas story.
Thank you Jasper, you have definitely been churning them out for us. I understand how hard it can be to do it when you have another full time job, so many thanks good Sir. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🖤✌️🎁
This month has been one great story after another. You’ve really gone above and beyond this December! Another great story!!! With my whole heart I thank you for all the work you do! ❤️🐙…..Wishing you and your family a very ✨Happy New Year!✨
Listened to this one in the dark at 2am using hearing aids as headphones - first time I tried it and was quite disappointing. I had to whack it up because the audio was pretty low. Six minutes in and my son appeared, asking me to turn it down; I hadn't switched Bluetooth on. 😂😅 Great spooker. Very satisfying and so well read 🙏
Don't hate me but they...sort of do a bit...🤣 They do on this podcast anyway. There are southern farmers and northern farmers and they are the only two voices I'll do 😁

@EnCryptedHorror would the relative gone to their home to rob them, if they hadn't gone to his house in Rye, in the first place?
No, telling him about the money planted the seed, didn't it? It's like "The Terminator" or something 😄.
You are the man 🫡
Good one. Benson (like James) rarely disappoints…
Hope you've enjoyed a nice Christmas, thanks for this creepy, brillant story
Narrated to perfection as always. I’ve said it once before and I’ll repeat it, no one, no one narrates a story like you. Wonderful.
Having no TV, by choice, my entertainment is RUclips. Therefore, I look forward to your readings 📚 Thank you and Happy New Year to you 😊

Me too, but I also read a lot. I've decided to start limiting time spent on YT because so much of it is brainrot👍
I always think I've heard or read all the stories by people like E.F. Benson, but here's a one that's new to me. Thank you!

Love how it is also a Christmas story of charity, and the rewards of good work.
