  • The Death of Oakland Baseball: A History of A’s Ownership was created by myself with the intention of telling the real story of the A’s stadium and relocation saga and providing relevant context by telling the full story of the A’s ownership history. A’s fans and the City of Oakland receive far too much blame when this topic is being discussed, when in reality, everything that has happened is 100% on A’s ownership. I know this video is rather lengthy, and I am certainly not a professional writer, narrator, or video producer, but my hope is that this video can inform everyone of the true story, along with aiding in dispelling common misconceptions, correcting the narrative, and shining light on the dreadful ownership A’s fans and the City of Oakland have been subjected to and have had to endure.
    This video is divided into 9 parts, and these parts are as follows:
    •Part 1: A’s Ownership From 1901 to 1995 1:08
    •Part 2: The Schott and Hofmann Years (1995-2005) 11:29
    •Part 3: Lew Wolff and John Fisher (2005-2016) 23:36
    •Part 4: Who is John Fisher? 38:26
    •Part 5: John Fisher and Dave Kaval (2016-Present) 47:55
    •Part 6: The Fight Back 2:11:35
    •Part 7: Why This Happened 2:44:52
    •Part 8: What Lies Ahead 2:59:01
    •Part 9: Correcting the Narrative 3:06:20
    There are several times in the video I mention there is a link in the description. These are said links, appearing in the order they were mentioned:

    This documentary was phenomenal. Watching it completely changed my perspective on the A’s relocation. As an outsider and casual baseball fan, I honestly thought the A’s just didn’t have local support and that ownership was trying to put the team in a better position. I was 100% wrong. I can’t believe how bad the A’s ownership is and how horrible they’ve been to the fans for years and years.
    I have mad respect for A’s fans and will be cheering you all on!

      That is great to hear! These are the comments I love to see! It’s never too late for someone to learn what us A’s fans have had to go through. While I don’t expect every person to sit through all 3 hours of this, I feel like every single person would be on the side of A’s fans if they knew even just 1/50th of what us A’s fans have had to put up with. So glad you enjoyed it and took something away from it!

      This is very similar to the ownership group of Clay Bennett who moved the Seattle SuperSonics to OKC. Took them a lot longer than Bennetts group. I feel for A’s fans, I saw a game there and the stadium is a dump. I grew up an A’s fan as my hometown was the AAA club for the A’s.
      What’s happening is wrong for baseball and absolutely awful for Oakland and A’s fans everywhere.

      Same here, MLB is dead to me. My son, Kid Stomper, is eager to become a Ballers fan and see Scrappy (though of course we will love Stomper forever, at least “our” Stomper). I was born and raised in Hayward, graduated from UC Davis and have lived in Sacramento for 20 years, where I started my career at Aerojet, a local rocket company that was in rancho cordova for over 80 years, then moved almost all of it’s business and manufacturing to Huntsville Alabama, for many reasons but the primary one was to boost value in order to sell to someone else. The trade commission blocked our sale to Lockheed Martin but eventually sold for a higher price to L3Harris. I still work there but we are merely a shell of what we once were. Sound familiar?

    I echo all the comments about this video being a great and comprehensive documentary. Your work is an important documentation of the decimation of a proud baseball tradition by a small, spineless dreg of a person, John Fisher, who has never created or operated anything of value in his sorry life. Fisher was born on 3rd base and thinks he hit a triple and is the definition of all the worst qualities of those with wealth. You did an excellent job of detailing Fishers immorality by simply stating the facts of what has transpired during Fisher’s ownership of the A’s. The facts indict Fisher’s immorality.
    Congratulations on this excellent film and Thank You for your exceptional work.

    My favorite baseball player of all time was a man named AJ Kirby-Jones. He played for my local Burlington Bees before Manfred removed them from Single-A. He never made it to the MLB but that didn't matter to me, because when I saw him play, he always made sure I would remember it. One day I got a package. A souvenir. An autographed hat of the team whose system he was in, and a message of gratitude for supporting him. I got more Cub hats than I can keep track of, but this autographed Oakland Athletics hat, is the favorite of them all, even despite small fit.
    John J Fisher wishes to taint this memory, incentivized by his greed alone. He may own the franchise, but AJ was the one who grew my love for the game. He may own the franchise, but dont mistake that for him caring. The day he dies, I will fucking celebrate it.

He’s been a public figure before the NHL announced they’ll be expanding. Also he is knows for not afraid of pulling the trigger when it comes to getting big name players. Hockey fans hate the way the Knights exploited LTIR, which prevents injured players’ salaries counting against the cap. The Knights success is a result of an owner who loves the team, respects the fans, and wants the team to succeed

    MLB should deny relocation of the A’s but vote to put an expansion team in Las Vegas. That’s a double win for MLB if they want a team in Las Vegas at some point. IMO, an MLB team is Las Vegas is a stupid idea. 1. nobody wants to watch baseball in a dome which it would have to be 2. Las Vegas is not large enough to support 80 baseball games a year in a large stadium. Hockey works because it’s a smaller venue and fans are more passionate about their home NHL team than a baseball fan. 3. Attendance at MLB games is declining anyway.

    I can tell you exactly what happened without a three hour video explaining it. The raiders left, the warriors left now the As are leaving. These three teams have three different owners. You know what they have in common fans and a city that's it. So one of three things happened either the fans didn't support the team 2. The city didn't want to invest in the team so they would stay or 3.its a combination of both city and fans. City and fans the only thing all three teams have in common these would be the only reasons all three teams made the same decision plane and simple

    • @stevenleighton97
      @stevenleighton97  11 месяцев назад +2

      Apparently, you DO need to watch the video, because your explanation shows that you know next to nothing about the situation. So, the way you see it, it can be either the fault of the fans or the city, but not the owners? Come on guy, no need to be a bootlicker! Oakland Warriors fans and Oakland Raiders fans were regarded as some of the best fans in sports. While the A’s attendance has diminished, it was directly caused by A’s owners. The A’s had one of baseball’s largest fanbases in the late 80s and early 90s, which is the only time in the A’s history they’ve had a good owner. The video goes very in depth about everything that A’s owners have done to drive fans away, so I encourage you to watch it, although I’m sure you won’t, because you prefer to just ignore the facts. The city of Oakland did not “lose” the Warriors, as once Lacob bought the team, he made it clear his goal was to build the Warriors a waterfront arena in a city that has double the population, a city in which the Warriors formerly played in. Its also important to note, they were and are the Golden State Warriors, and have always been the Bay’s team. The Warriors have routinely honored their time in Oakland with Oakland themed jerseys. As for the Raiders, please read what Mark Davis has said about why the Raiders left for Las Vegas. Look at who he blames the most. Hint: its not Oakland, its the A’s, more specifically, John Fisher, who also happens to be the reason the A’s are leaving! Not A’s fans, and not Oakland! John Fisher has never been interested in keeping the team in Oakland, as he’s spent nearly the entirety of his ownership trying to relocate the team. The only stadium “attempts” in Oakland by the A’s were not ones that they were serious about or put all their effort into. Before Fisher, there was Lew Wolff, and Steve Schott, etc. The A’s have had terrible owners for their entire time in Oakland (except the Haas ownership), so you certainly cannot blame fans for not showing up. The city more than wanted to build the A’s a ballpark at Howard Terminal, in fact, they’d been in support of the A’s building there for over 20 years! They have also supported the A’s building at the existing Coliseum site, along with other sites. You should really watch the video, because pushing these false narratives that can be easily disproven is a bad look.

    • @adrianshapiro
      @adrianshapiro 11 месяцев назад

      @stevenleighton97 again those teams have three things in common the fans and the city. If fans aren't showing up like you said they weren't then they are part to blame. If you support a team you support them up or down no matter what your thoughts on the owner so that's one. Two the As asked the city for help paying for a stadium and they said no so there's two. The problem is the city and fans it obvious. 3 teams leave, 3 different owners the only thing in common is the city and the fans. It's clear what the problem is.

      Einstein, the Raiders left L.A. to move back to Oakland. Does anybody say that LA lost the Raiders because LA fans didn’t support the team? NOT. The Raiders had the poorest owner in the NFL and he was going to move the team to the city that would increase his net worth the most. If you knew anything about the Raiders, you would know that fan support in Oakland had never been an issue.
      The Warriors moved to a new stadium that is 4.5 miles across the Bay Bridge from Oakland. BTW - you know how much in corporate welfare SF gave to the Warriors to lure them away from Oakland? Answer: Zero. The Warriors new home, Chase Center, was 100% privately financed by the Warriors ownership. Also, it is obvious you were blind to the sell-out crowds at Warrior home game while they were winning NBA championships in Oakland. BTW - the Warriors home arena in SF is only 4.5 miles across a bridge from Oakland, while the San Francisco 49er’s home stadium, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, is 32 miles from the the SF city limits (42 miles from Downtown SF). Based upon your logic, such as it is, San Francisco lost the 49ers.
      You are inherently supporting the biggest loser among MLB owners, which sure doesn’t make you look like a winner for making excuses for such a slime. If Oakland loses the A’s, which is not nearly a done deal, it is solely because John Fisher proposed a huge mixed-use project (Howard Terminal) that in addition to a waterfront stadium included 3,000 residential units, 1.5M sf of commercial space, a 450-room hotel & 1,500 seat performance center and as negotiations with Oakland over the development agreement reached their final stage, Fisher found out that he didn’t gave the financial juice to get financing for that project, so relocation to Vegas for a stadium-only deal located on 9 acres behind the Tropicana Hotel was a face-saving move for Fisher. There is no other reason anyone walks away from a big mixed-use waterfront development in the Bay Area that is fully entitled and has big profit potential for a stadium-only deal in Vegas that won’t be worth the cost to build it, which is exactly why the A’s sought a $380M public subsidy. If a stadium has any potential of being worth more than the cost to build it, a public subsidy would not be necessary.
      Lady, if you are going to post simplistic, uninformed, unintelligent comments, I would advise you to either learn something about the subject you are commenting upon or restrain yourself from putting your mental shortcomings in a public forum for all to see.
      That’s All.
