    Loved the video and the things you learned while growing citrus in containers, I needed this,because i was sparingly watering them because i have killed so many yrs ago, people kept saying don't water as much . Now i know that here in this blistering heat and sun they really need the water being containers.

    I found this soil mixture works well for nearly all plants: Coco coir and vermiculite 1:1 ratio. Then you add some work castings, a few cops depending on the batch. And finally, either fertilizer or compost. Usually, if it's a citrus, I add citrus/azelea fertilizer to the soil to get the plant started. Mix it in and the azelea fertilizer provides the acidity they need. Coco coir holds water well but very good with drainage. Vermiculite absorbs a lot of water and helps with drainage. This all helps to make sure over watering is very difficult in case of a rain storm or you make a mistake. Once I added the plant to the new Soo, I make sure to NOT cover most, if not all, of the surface roots. Around them i add some work castings, again making sure to not cover the surface/feeder roots. Now, iadd a nice later of mulch. Much is ok to cover the feeder roots because it breathes, insuring they won't rot because of too much moisture, and it keeps the soil moist and cooler than the temperature outside. An added benefit that I'm only starting to fully understand the impact of is that over time, the wood chips start to definite for to bacteria and mainly fungi. Fungal compost is extremely good for plants but many don't have it. This adds nutrients that otherwise your plants can't get. So mulch is super helpful. I've tried this with my new Meyer lemon and once it established itself and set new growth, it's taken off. Only problem I've had so far is over heating when the sun is beating down on it. It's been raining a lot but no overwatering issue so far. What you think of this method?

    Great video. Your channel is so inspiring and gets me to want to grow more citrus. Ugh sooo many questions lol....How do you know if your citrus is in the right place? I have a mexican lime in a more shaded area and i have a meyer lemon in a more sunny area. I'm wondering if I should move my meyer over next to my lime location. The lime area has more filtered light. The meyer location is hot and direct sun from 11am to around 4pm. They are both growing nicely but I always wonder if it could be doing better. I had them both in direct sun for 8 hours and they both burned...i think. My meyer really burnt up. So i repotted and moved them to the shady spots. I'm just wondering if it's too shaded. Does the Meyer need full sun for a few hours or can it be filtered and shaded the entire day? I just dont have a clue. I'm really trying to nurse my meyer who had the most damage, He's had such a hard time because i know nothing lol
    Also my meyer has same size branches crossing. There also a tree stem that came out of the ground next to the main trunk. This was cut off real low when I was given the plant. Now it has 2 green branches coming out of it. I cut them off a few times, but it keeps coming back. Do I just leave it alone and let the tree grow? I found myself pruning the heck out of this plant trying to keep branches from crossing, but I feel like its very young. The branches are only as thick as a pencil. Do I just let it grow until it gets older?

    • @GardenloveHomestead
      @GardenloveHomestead  4 года назад +1

      Right now is the perfect time to do your trimming. Your going to train the tree. It will bounce back. The branches coming out the trunk in the bottom below the graft cut them off those are suckers. I've found that my Meyer lemons 🍋 prefers some shade special afternoon shade. If you live in a really hot 🔥 climate like zone9b California mostly shade would donfine as long as its in a bright 🌞 spot. Your tree showed you signs that it didn't like full sun. Good job on moving it. When there young they cant take full sun all day right away. You have really good questions. I might do a live chat to answer these questions in more detail. It will have to be next weeks. I hope that was helpful. Thank you for watching 👀 and supporting my channel ❤ 🙂🤗

      @TheJanicetunes 4 года назад

      @@GardenloveHomestead Thank you thank you so much for responding! You answered exactly what I needed to know! I will cut those suckers off immediately. I can't wait for the live chat! That's gonna be so great! I'm so happy I found your channel!

  • @TheJanicetunes
    @TheJanicetunes 4 года назад +1

    Hi I went and I took off the suckers as u instructed and... I came up with another question lol. My Meyer has 3 trunks. One trunk is abt 3 inches from the main trunk. That one had 2 big suckers. It had been cut to a stump b4 I got it, but it keeps growing suckers. The second trunk is the main one with the graft line. The third trunk crosses and wraps around the main one. It's basically the same size as the main. Should I cut this back to a stump or let it fuze together with the main trunk? I can't seem to find answers on having multiple trunks. Most people have these nice one trunk trees. But both my lime and lemon trees have multiple trunks. My lime has 2 trunks, but they are not crossing. They go straight up. Do I cut one down to the stump on my lime as well?

    • @GardenloveHomestead
      @GardenloveHomestead  4 года назад

      This is very interesting! a few questions. 1. are all the branches above the graft? if yes you can keep them if not cut anything below the graft line. 2. is your tree ultra dwarf? My kumquat has multiple branches growing in a bush form, not much of a tree. if you go look at the kumquat video you will see the multiple branches.

    • @TheJanicetunes
      @TheJanicetunes 4 года назад

      @@GardenloveHomestead thank you so much for all of your help! You are awesome! I saw your komquat vid. The branches on those come out of the one trunk. Mine are more like the in your visit to yur neighbor who had the loquats. He had a pomegranate tree next to the loquat that had 2 trunks coming out of the ground. After listening to what u said and others about suckers, I think it's ok to leave the multiple trunks. They don't have characteristics of a sucker, so I think it's ok for now 😄 thank u again for all your work u do and sharing it with us
