@@colleenc236 I bought a brand new old school camper type percolator blue with the white dots for 1.00. my first go at it on electric stove. No more wood Stove had to move I hear it starting to boil. I used the filter and just punched a hole in the stem of the metal coffee grind container and put the lid on. I like it strong even though it's DECAF. I ground the beans and packed it full. It's perking I turned down the heat. Steaming good. Will brew for I guess fifteen minutes. So fun 😊 thanks for the tips.

I've used a French Press for a few years but I bought one of those same percolators last month. It was mainly out of nostalgia and remembering hearing it on my grandmothers stove but I must say that I like the larger amount of coffee it affords and also how much easier it is to cook over a fire. I've learned that if I keep it at a low boil, it tastes much richer and less bitter than if I have it perking very quickly at a higher temp. Just my 2c.

This works for me: Grind beans to coarsest setting. Place grounds into basket with *no* filter. Place percolator on stove, and set stove to its highest heat setting. When water starts to perk, set the stove heat setting to lowest that keeps the water perking, and set a timer for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, remove pitcher from heat, and remove the grounds basket from the percolator with a pliers or similar. To prevent accidentally drinking any grounds that show up in your coffee cup (because no coffee filter), drink all but the last few drops of coffee in the cup.

  • @dangerpudge1922
    @dangerpudge1922 2 года назад +45

Okay, let's give a little help here. Don't worry about the grinds; the most important part of percolated (best) coffee is using a large/coarse grind. No need to filter. Once the coffee is finished percolating to whatever strength you like, remove it from the heat and let it sit until it stops percolating. Then, pull the inner assembly up and let it drain into the carafe for a few seconds and set aside. Let the coffee rest for just a minute and any grinds will fall to the bottom and won't contaminate your cup unless you try to get the very last smidge of coffee out of it. Even then, if you really wanted to you could just pour the last bit through a filter.
Give that a shot and see if your coffee isn't way better.

When I was a kid, everyone had percolators like this; the rich people had electric percolators. My mom always had coffee percolating on the stove. I would buy coffee for her, Maxwell House or Folger's. For special occasions, my dad would bring home some 8 O'Clock coffee that he had ground fresh at the A&P. Sometimes I had to pick up another little glass cap, they break after heating and cooling many times. Back then there were two choices for coffee: Regular or drip grind, regular being a coarser grind for percolators. There would still be a few grounds in every cup, but they went to the bottom and didn't cause any problems. Mom's coffee would peel paint! It took a few years, but Mr Coffee killed the percolator.

Thanks for the warning about getting the new glass top, I'll start looking to have one on hand. I smell the coffee it's strong even though it's DECAF. It's on a nice slow perk. Good steam not too violent just easy going. A few grounds in glass lid. That's ok first try ever in my life. The French press is annoying and doesn't make much volume. 🔥 Happy camper at home 🏠

Reminds me of when I was growing up in the 1960s. Mr. Coffee-style electric drip coffeemakers were introduced in 1972; prior to that, pretty much everyone used a percolator (a few connoisseur type used French presses or manual pour-over units, which both are also quite good). I can remember my parents making coffee on an electric percolator that was avocado green!

They actually make flat filters for percolators. I have my sweetheart's percolator that he took everywhere with him when he was in the military. It's a banged up, burned up, very light (tin perhaps?) percolator that has spent time sitting right on top of coals and on electric hot plates. After the recent hurricane I was without power for five days. Used my little beat up percolator sitting on the grate of one of those tiny little round bbq grills on my kitchen table, but instead of charcoal I was using a can of sterno as my heat source. Didn't have power, but I had coffee! If you grind your own beans you can make a courser grind that won't require the use of filters, or you can make the coffee and then pour it through some layered cheesecloth if you don't have filters.

45 years ago I bought an electric percolator - yes, electric with exposed heating elements. Used it to brew my coffee which was coarse to medium grind. It run very well on electricity, but I couldn't use it over a flame stove. The thing was eventually lost as we moved from place to place.
Then I got one exactly your type recently and the fun of making percolated coffee immediately came back to live. Ironically when I got this one which we can use over flame stove, there is no more gas stove (I live in a dormitory apartment which prohibits open flame for cooking or making coffee). Anyway I make two cups of coffee every morning (somehow the coffee is always too weak if I make only one cup) and I must agree that the coffee tastes so much better than those other styles. I don't use a filter and I just leave the perked coffee rest for half a minute then pour slowly. There is no grains in the coffee.

I didn’t use it correctly until now that I stumbled across this video. Just pulled it out of my cabinet, grind some organic beans and went to percolating. I believe coffee taste much better on the stove top heat or flame or wood stove because the water gets hotter then a coffee maker heating mechanism. The naturally heated water brings out a more flavorful taste of the beans.

I'm assuming that "back in the day" coffee wasn't so finely ground, so the grounds wouldn't filter through the percolator. I remember both of my sets of grandparents using one, and I don't remember there being a problem with coffee grounds in their cup of morning joe!

Some people never even grinded up their coffee beans. My grandmother had a grinder.

When drip coffee makers came out Maxwell's started labeling the more finely ground coffee as ADC standing for automatic drip coffee. There's commercial on RUclips with Margaret Hamilton advertising it. KitchenAid used to make a coffee grinder set a different grinder settings for different types of coffee makers and percolator setting is more coarse than drip.

Thats a great way to make coffee. Sometimes I do it the old swedish way. I take a coffee pot. Put in coffee and water and letting it boil over the fire. Then I wait for the coffee to sink to the bottom and pour really caarefully. But this way is easier.

Love my perked coffee, nothing better. I have 2 special propane burners just for making coffee, when the electric goes out. When it comes to coffee, an extra burner is a must.

The filter is a tad bit bigger...is that ok...will the coffee grounds spill?
Other than that ...that looks like a better brewing idea...👍👍

I remember the one on my grandmothers two burner wood stove in our kitchen. One burner had water, the other my grandfathers coffee, it's where I learned how to make good coffee. We do pour over now, that would work for you too.

I bought a new Percolator yesterday and coffee looks so diluted. I used expresso coffee. Can you please tell me what is the reason for that?

If you want a nice round hole in the centre of that coffee filter fold the filter in half across the middle, then half again (so it looks like an icecream cone shape), then fold in half maybe 3-4 times more and cut across the pointy tip of the triangle shape you have. Then unfold. Cut small first because you can fold it again and cut higher up😊✨

Any thoughts on French Press (pour over) VS percolator coffee? I will add this to the conversation: get stainless steel and avoid aluminum brands. Aluminum leaches into food/drink .

I thought I'd try my recently purchased percolator and lo and behold I have that exact same one. Going to fire up my single peopane camp stove and now I know to use a filter and how much coffee grounds to add for that perect cup of java. Prepping practice makes perfect! Great video!

I prefer manual coffee makers like this, which is why I've been using a French press for about 10 years now (plus it can brew tea and espresso). I can't go back to drip brew machines, the taste just isn't as good to me.

It's my 2nd morning percolating. Seems like it takes 25-30mins for 9 cups just to heat up and start percolating. I use a 120V single burner hot plate so I can put the operation anywhere I want. Recommendations of how long to let it percolate are a wide range from 4mins to 15mins so that is for sure trial-and-error to taste. Today I did a slow perc for about 10mins,high to heat up then 2 to percolate. It's ok but it's just Folgers anyway, which I drink for effect/caffeine not flavor. Eventually I'll get some roasted beans to grind and try then next Spring I'll break out the old roasting pan and do my own. I decided to try percolating because I kept killing auto drip makers and it was getting costly!
