How engaging is McEnroe, no bullshit, brutally honest, raw. Huge charisma and immensely intelligent and introspective. I'm captivated every time he speaks.
The thing I love about John the most is that he shows you his heart. Raw. The good, the bad, etc. No pretense. So good to know that his friendship with Borg remains strong.
Yes I used to think they were complete opposites but then later after reading Bjorn's book, "My Life and Game," I realized that those two were very much alike. Bjorn had a ton of anger he would fight to control and very much the same intensity as McEnroe. He had a lot of anger issues as a kid and tennis sort of allowed him to channel it in a positive way and like many he appeared very calm and serene. Not so at all. He felt much the same way McEnroe felt just he kept it from spilling out but channeled or focused it into a positive energy in his game.
John McEnroe is refreshingly honest and an excellent communicator when it comes to how he dealt with anger and challenges in his life. I find it incredibly inspirational.
Great interview! It's true that most did not watch to see him win or lose, we watched him because he was John McEnroe and he entertained. He made a great name of the sport of tennis and made it an emotional sport.
@ LauraLee365. John McEnroe entertained tennis fans with the incomparable beauty of his game, but it is unfortunate that he and Connors felt that it was entertaining for the fans for he and Connors to berate tennis officials on the court. And Connors went a step further than McEnroe by using obscene gestures on the tennis court in the misguided belief that such crude gestures were "entertaining". Tennis pros can be entertaining without resorting to yelling at officials, foul language or crude obscene gestures!
“... and especially, to be serious. To try to be a good husband, to try to be a good father. The best that I can, and to try to be, most importantly, a good person.” Great aspirations.
I've been such a big fan of John's throughout the years during the ups and downs. In my opinion, he is an amazing man and the best American tennis player to date. I wish him continued success.
No matter what you think about McEnroe, he's so very interesting to listen to and watch. I personally think he's probably one of the few people that have influenced tennis most in it's history. I don't know if the tennis craze in the 1980s and 1990s would have happened if not for Borg vs McEnroe. He probably brought hundreds if not thousands of gifted American and European athletes to the sport of tennis.
Could be, but I think the tennis boom really started in the early-mid 70's with Evert, Billie Jean, arthur Ashe, Conners, etc. or even before with one match between Rod Laver and John Newcomb that was broadcast o National TV. But yes, McEnroe and Borg was very influential.
Great interviewer. Of course, great interviewee. Great answers. Glad to see the other guests loosened up a bit in this second part of John’s interview.
For me the most interesting tennis player on and off the court. On court because of his racquet artistry (He had what I would call "McEnroesque shots". And off court because of his total honesty about himself and his gift for great conversation. Sure, not the greatest tennis player of all time but for me the most interesting tennis player of all time.
That is one of the best sports anecdotes I have ever heard - Bjorn telling John to settle down and just play for the fun of it. It took me for ever to understand that concept. That is what competition is about - your best against my best, then we go have a beer afterward and laugh about the outcome. 👍🍻
Great great interview. John is so good at being interviewed. He was also pretty good at giving interviews too, like when he had his own short-lived talk show. It was only on for a few weeks, but I thought he showed great promise as a host. The show also had a lot of good lesser known music acts of the day.
McEnroe is the only male tennis player who helped me love ❤️ the game as passionately as I do. I never played for cultural and economic reasons. The first player to dare to go to the net and not stay at back court. He brought excitement and passion for his fans and other players who dared to play the entire court. When it was tennis season I ruled what we watched.
A late response, however I truly think that is a translation mishap. I do believe he meant it differently. He probably wanted to emphasize that he loved watching John McEnroe play for his proficiency in the game, whether he lost or won.☺️🎾
Exactly!!! McEnroe was a rock star on the court. The interviewer nailed it. McEnroe, flaws and all, made tennis fun to watch. He was an entertainer, as well as, an incredible tennis player!!!
Probably, but a mile of a difference between them in ability as players. Kyrgios will never even approach the heights McEnroe did and will be quickly forgotten. Not the case with McEnroe, one of the great players.
i was a tennis coach when nasty, conners and mac were acting like fucking idiots, it was tough telling kids this is not how to act, glad to see mac getting better now
They are men, not women, very passionate, ego driven, but all in for the sport. I was rivetted and entertained and forgave their outbursts. Why? Because of all the hours they trained. The conditions on the court, cameras, crazy and good and subdued fans. Prejudiced judges now and again. Press paid to get the dirt and not the history of it, the struggle. They are human and have personal lives with worries to cope with too. They were the superstars of the day. Different time. But he got it right. Snobby sport, outrageously priced. We were rivetted to the tv screen for every match. I don't watch tennis today. Too many rules. Too much elitism. Too many opinions like yours to tell passionate players...oh do behave, be quiet. Would you tell an actor that on stage? Don't the dramatic actors with flair and panache, joie de vivre keep the seats full? Winners give their all. Get along to go along will not fill a stadium and rake in the interest and cashflow for big and deep pockets of clubs, venues, sponsors, owners, coaches, tv crews, msm, vendors of food and drink, security, cleaning crews, coach, bus, limo and taxi drivers, shop with club and player merchandise, souvenir stands, ball crew, lines people, umpires, trophy makers, last but not least? The players themselves. They with their expressive style of play bankrolls all of the above. Shoe companies, racket makers, court teams for grass at least. Net makers, ball makers. So some leeway can be afforded and entertaiment can be had, memories made, action recorded and tales for the dinner table can be told and retold with proof. History. Living history. Can't be beat.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that. They were stiff as boards for the most part. It’s like their lips had to be prised open to crack a faint smile or tiny show of interest. McEnroe is incredibly interesting...none of them had any personality whatsoever. I love McEnroe.
Great player now great commentator too bad his first marriage didn't work out. I never had to live with an addict so maybe it was necessary to divorce her and keep the children from her. But she never recovered or had a second carrier. Her father abandoned her as well. No happy ending for her.
They were beyond rude. I bet McEnroe’s not left enough for them and doesn’t bow down to their little baby dismembering (fact) political cult. I’m a woman and I thought they were complete asses.
The three other guests had all each been interviewed in detail earlier on the show. I think they were totally appropriate guests (not interviewers) during John’s segment. Letting him have his chance to speak but giving him supportive nods and smiles at appropriate times. They didn’t seem rude to me at all. They seemed very polite.
Am i the only one who thinks this was a pretty bad interview? i mean some of these questions.. -My favorite moment of your career was when you lost to Lendl -My favorite thing about you is that when you lose you don't care. Rock & Roll. (wtf?) -Do you lose your temper with your kids aswell? -You went to anger management. Please talk about that. One of skavlans questions even got shot down by John because it was inappropriate (i didn't really understand why though)

Great interview. Much respect to John. His honesty and sincerity are appreciated. What a good story at the end with Borg! Thank you for this upload.!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching and commenting.
John McEnroe is refreshingly honest and an excellent communicator when it comes to how he dealt with anger and challenges in his life. I find it incredibly inspirational.
my heart melt to hear that the bromance between Borg and Mcenroe still strong
I saw the 1980 Wimbledon final live....in the morning (rare at the time), including that tiebreaker. These players needed each other as a challenge.
Great interview! It's true that most did not watch to see him win or lose, we watched him because he was John McEnroe and he entertained. He made a great name of the sport of tennis and made it an emotional sport.

John McEnroe speaking from his heart. Good stuff.
Such a great guy and talented . Very honest

John McEnroe still going strong. Respect!
one of if not THE best interviews/appearances by McEnroe. good group of people and good host! THANKS!
Great interviewer. Of course, great interviewee. Great answers. Glad to see the other guests loosened up a bit in this second part of John’s interview.
He’s pretty transparent and doesn’t get offended by the questions 🙌🏼🙌🏼

P.J. ..............Mac playing Mats in Davis Cup in that Epic match, In one rally he hit at least 30 different shots and speed , amazing !!!!!
@@dannycalley7777 wasn't that match the one that went for over 6 hours if I remember correctly?
Great interview, thanks for sharing. John must be a person really with meeting.

Excellent interview, thank you.
Great stories about the Borg rivalry.
I saw McEnroe play Lendl, Connors and Vilas in 1982
Wonderful guy! Incredibly bright and charming!
This should be recommended viewing.

That was a nice story about Bjorn.

Not everyone just .loved him for the show. Of course we wanted him to win. True fans.

I like him a lot.
I actually love his honesty!
Such a character
All my life I love Bjorn and John. On the court I prefered Bjorn, in life unambiguously John. Wonderful tennis players, great friends.
They were complete opposites on the court, both in their temperament and their style of play.
one of the best comments i have seen in my life about anything. 3:33 "you have the rock'n roll approach.."
Exactly!!! McEnroe was a rock star on the court. The interviewer nailed it. McEnroe, flaws and all, made tennis fun to watch. He was an entertainer, as well as, an incredible tennis player!!!
What a great interview. This would never happen on American television.
2:42 : Jean-Michel Jarre, French composer.
I love John....off the court!!
John McEnroe is very smart he is also very honest and very interesting person.
John McEnroe is Norman Mailer's twin brother.
Just fantastic John :)
Always wondered what Borg said to him that day on the court.
He said, "John, chill out, this is just a game."
@@scottiedds Watching the 30 for 30 special "Fire& Ice, that is exactly what Bjorn said.
Love you Johnny Mac!
Funny how everyone has a hero.
Bjon Bourg is the one guy who understands John McEnroe during his career and now John McEnroe is the only guy who could understand Nick Kyrgios
Probably, but a mile of a difference between them in ability as players. Kyrgios will never even approach the heights McEnroe did and will be quickly forgotten. Not the case with McEnroe, one of the great players.
That was fun but I now also want to hear from Charlotte Kalla the xc skier sitting next to John... anyone have a link to where she speaks ?
Greatest tennis player ever ❤️
Cool guy.
The Wimbleton final of the century! 1980, McEnroe-Borg!
Love this guy!
It makes sense to me that those two became buddies.

Who are these other people staring at him and not saying a word?
They got interveiwed before him and on this talkshow they usually keep the guests throughout the entire show on the sideline.
They're star struck

How many tennis careers were ruined because of lousy umpires making bad calls?
Is that Jarre?

3:35...true
Being married to an actor, it's not a good idea... 🤔🤣
John is obviously Aspergers. Take away all his Aspergers traits and you have the sweetest guy.
Who's the chick on the left of JM ?...
McEnroe is a fantastic guest.. a good bottle of Scotch and two glasses..I'd be a happy man in his company..
me too mr. barriskell,...nice comment

Really? I thought both women appeared to like John and what he had to say
I saw a swedish documentary here on youtube about Borg, seems like he only interested in money and will end friendships over it
Bullshit
