That isn`t rot. That is a manufacturing defect that shouldn`t generally affect anything. I have a few early audio CDs that have pin prick holes through the reflective layer.

I wonder if Saturn game discs have error correction code like audio CDs to negate these pinholes.

I don’t think that is disc rott, generally disc rot discolours the bottom of the disc to a dark grey/brown/purple. I have disc rott on a couple of Xbox 360 games and it has started at the outer edge of the disc and is creeping inwards. Air is getting into the sandwiched layers probably through the rim of the disc. It is a really annoying occurrence, but all I can suggest is buy a de-humidifier and empty it daily to keep air moisture low.

I've got a dehumidifier, doubt I would be able to run it all day, however my game room is usually locked all week and I only play in there at the weekends and air it when the weather is dry 😉

My experience of the (PS3 Only) pinhole phenomenon is that despite being visible under light the games that have them have always worked, the area affected appears to be a tiny particle of dust/debris that's hit the artwork during the process that applies that layer, occasionally you can even see a lift at the same spot which may lead to further artwork peeling more of a scratch than a pinhole, as for if this damages the Disc I have no idea, some say it doesn't as it is just the artwork, however there are numerous places on a Disc where the same data is held for loading speed convenience so it might ignore these spots/bad sectors and go to the next area looking for the required data to load the games next output, this may or may not be why the Disc/s still works.
The answer I am looking for and nobody will give me a provable answer on is, is the Disc damaged or not? as if it is just the artwork I don't care, but if it's only working as it has other areas of the Disc to go to read the required data then that's a problem, can anyone shed some light on this (or through) it?

@@9ElevenGamer I came to the conclusion that pin holes are just in the artwork, dvds should fair better than CDs because the whole data layer should be encased in plastic.

The front labels can cause the pin holes you see. A few of my PS3 games have pin holes that light goes through but it because if the front label.

I've not checked any PS3 games yet but PS2 generally looked fine.

@@classicretrogameroom okay so I went through all my Sega Saturn games. No USA release games have any pin holes in there. Some of my Japanese games do. Some are little micro holes of light and on the label side I can't see anything wrong with the label.. hmm but a few have larger holes of light going through them and on the label side it looks like the label is worn or breaking down, letting light pass through the disc. The worse game I have with this is After Burner II. I played it for a bit and it played perfectly fine. Maybe it's just the top label side of the disc causing these holes of light to show through the discs.

Exact. Some of my games have the front label with very small holes (not visible to the naked eye). Frankly, I don't know how these little holes formed. Can these be considered pinholes?

      @absoluteclownworld 4 года назад

@@Batmans_Justice I'm pretty sure they were there from the beginning when made.

@@absoluteclownworld I can't say for sure if pinholes come directly from beginning, since most of the games I buy are used. However, they don't bother me, I'm just afraid that maybe they could create problems with the disc, in particular the dreaded Disc Rot (although as I said, I'm not sure that the Pinholes and the Disc Rot are connected).

Aren't disc/cd rot supposed to have like a small black ring around the dot. I have heard that small dots is just manifacturing defects and is nothing to worry about. Some of my ps3 games have pin holes and work without any problem, Even my oldest ps3 games have some and have not gotten worse. its just the front label.

Long as it still works. I have old PlayStation and Xbox games scratched and still work. A very few do have tiny pin holes but all work fine. Does the games in your collection with “disc rot or whatever” still load and play ?

      Some do, some dont.

Some would be disc rot, stuck with a progressive disease. An actual living organism destroying it. I would hope most are just scratched or damaged but not diseased.

Some of my playstation 3 games have pinholes and my metal gear solid 2 for ps2 has a pinhole and they work fine

Real if you store the discs in a cold/damp area or really hot area. Left in the sun will probably do it as well. Other than that not a issue most have to be worried about. I have old turbo cd / PC engine cd games and all are perfect. Good quality discs will last. Burned discs will break down after 20+ years.

Unfortunately the weather and humidity, temperature etc are all over the place in the UK 🙁
