      Reza was arrogant, and underestimated me when I took his class in graduate school. He assumed I was another farm kid from Iowa, which I was, but I attended high school in Vienna Austria, AIS the # 1 ranked international school in the World at the time, traveled the world, had security clearances through the CIA at 15, made many friends from the Middle East. My whole group of friends in college were Muslims from Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, and Palestine. Reza assumed I had never left Boone Iowa, and the farms.

    Since the creation of the United Nations in 1945, no country has violated as many UN Security Council Resolutions as the state of Israel. In spite of this fact, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the United States has the power to veto any Resolution it wishes, and has used this veto power more than 20 times since 1973, to thwart the will of the Council, and to shield Israel from any consequenses for its actions.
    The United Nation's General Assembly has repeatedly condemned Israel's occupation of the territories as illegal (see UN resolutions 338, 1397, and 1402, among others). Israel's continued occupation of Palestine, sanctioned and maintained by the US, is one of the most serious obstructions to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East...

      @davidstewart8906 9 лет назад +6

      Graham Bell I wouldn't be so sure. It's true that we don't know what SH's real motives are (and frankly it's not worth speculating). But it is also true that many otherwise progressive/liberal people have become increasingly suspicious of the left because of its position on Israel. Some of these people, like Michael Walzer, M. Nussbaum etc., have remained progressive on most issues, but accuse the left of being too casual about "non-Western violence", while others have rejected the left altogether and adopted rightwing positions across the board. My point is that the Israel/Palestine issue has a tendency to affect people's (esp. ethnically/religiously Jewish people's) political views in a really deep, thoroughgoing way. So it wouldn't at all surprise me if Sam Harris's politics have been affected by this issue as well.
      Just for the sake of disclosure, I am a leftist (socialist, not liberal) supporter of palestinian self-determination, and I live in a predominantly Jewish community, so I see everyday the way Jewish people, on both sides of the issue, agonize over the israel/palestine question.

He is attacking 'barely Muslim' Reza because Reza tries to confuse every issue with his bullshit far-left dogma which makes it harder to deal with the bigger problems that radical Muslims are causing. Harris has tried, to some extent, to be the antidote to the spread of delusion to which Reza is continuously contributing. Also, he is not a 'supposed atheist', he is an atheist.

    • @zvipatent
      @zvipatent 9 лет назад

      Hi Steven: for the record the vast majority of Israelis, including the PM, support a 2-state solution (that's "old hat"/passe). We have no interest or benefit from absorbing ~2 million Arabs into our country. We just want a reasonable deal and our security concerns met. Our PM, like those before, have stated that we will have to make a lot of tough compromises for peace, and tearing down many settlements is certainly one of those (many surround our capital, Jerusalem, and so will remain). At the moment, the PA has a unity arrangement with Hamas (a terror org whose charter calls for the destruction of Israel); and the PA (Abbas) is violating the Oslo Accords by his request for a state via the UN without negotiations. He also allows hate-teach on children's shows; names streets after terrorists and praises them, and pays terrorists when they are caught. And he is considered MODERATE ! When a fearless and bold leader like Saddat heads the PA, there will be a more realistic chance for peace. Peace to you !

      ***** Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide--to me aren't the same thing. Use the word Genocide when it's genocide. Ethnic cleansing applies to genocide as well as non-genocidal attempts to remove an ethnic group. Its way too soft a word. It's belittling to use the word ethnic cleansing when genocide should be used instead. Now--The Palestinians were ethnically cleansed. They were kicked out of villages in huge numbers preceding the creation of Israel. Yitzakh Rabin personally signed the orders expelling 70,000 people from Lydda and Ramle. This was a completely documented ethnic cleansing (700,000 people were expelled in total). It sure as shit wasn't a genocide though. Obviously.

      Soon people will not be able to make any gesticulation,will not be able to move their eyes and lips because that is antisemitic.
      And what about others and their discrimination,they are not emphasized by MASS MEDIA like jews.

    Obviously the one state solution is ideal, but who the fuck in their right mind would think it's a realistic and viable outcome? I mean Czech-Slovakia split after years of peaceful co-existence. Yugoslavia split in a brutal civil war and after living for decades in relative harmony under Tito. Heck, we have places like Quebec in Canada, arguably the most peaceful and economically advanced country in the world, pushing for separation. How the fuck would Israeli's and Palestinians, who have been fighting for over a century, with two different religions, live in one state together. If that one state occurs it would simply end in a brutal civil war.
    Case closed.

    • @Crazytype
      @Crazytype 9 лет назад

      Nope, not case closed, because the alternative is the continuation of the occupation and there might be a time the international community doesn't turn a blind eye. The israeli sight might be open to concessions when it is in their self-interest to do so. The context of what defines such self-interest might change in the future for many reasons. I've read a report that Gaza won't have any drinkable water in 2020 if nothing changes. Maybe Israel is waiting out the problem... Israel won't let them have access to the jordan river, that's for sure.

    • @zvipatent
      @zvipatent 9 лет назад

      Danny - the 1-state solution is NOT ideal. Israel would cease to be a state for the protection of Jews in their homeland is an enormous Arab population became part of Israel. A 2 or even a 3-state solution (e.g. Gaza as yet a separate state) is the best IMO. A 1-state solution would be good for the Palestinians as they would become part of a Democratic state with religious freedom and a strong justice system, not to mention economy, but it would be bad for the people for whom the country was set up, namely Jews. I think that perhaps an even better solution is that the so-called Palestinians in the west bank become part of Jordan, and the Gazan become part of Egypt.

It was true 5 years ago, its a fact today. West Bank settlements are still growing, Netanyahu is bolder than ever, saying shit like Israel is for Jews only, and openly admitting he has no intentions of giving the Palestinians any land. Also this 75% democratic Jewish majority state was founded by ousting 80% of the Arab-Muslim population and 5% Arab-Christian population. There were merely 15% Jewish living inside the Palestine till 1948.

      No Shane. The reason why, Israel will never honor the "refugee numbers" is because those numbers are inflated times 10, based on the critieria specified in UNRWA. And if you haver never read that criteria, here it is: "What is a Palestinian?" According to UNRWA, it is any Non Jew, who lived only 2 years, west of the Jordan. That means, that if you are Egyptian, and lived there for 2 years, you are magically a "Palestinian" and you and your entire family can invade Israel and steal land. Not gonna happen.

    Dear Mr Aslan, I have heard your talk about Israel and Palestine and had to write, as you seem to have gotten many facts wrong (Reza Aslan talks about Palestine and Israel).
    First, there are no 500,000 Israelis living in what is supposed to be the future Palestinian state. It is more like 70,000. The rest are in settlements that are close to the border and in ANY agreement would be annexed to Israel in exchange to equal-sized land from pre-1967 Israel. This has already been greed by both sides.
    Moreover, Territory-wise, the settlements take up only about 3% of the west banks land. So he's wrong again - that's not only "Ramallah", there are many other cities, as well as newly built Rawabi.
    "Nobody wants Gaza"? it has almost 2 million Palestinian in it. Who exactly doesn't want it?
    There haven't been 20 years of peace process. the actual peace process was between 1993-2000, where suicide bombings and radicalisation started (on both sides). then the Second Intefada started - hardly a case of Peace, and that lasted pretty much until 2005. however talks resumed only in 2007 when Olmert took office. almost in Tandem, hamas took over Gaza and made any possible deal to be unrealistic. however, peace talks took place until early 2010, with a settlement moratorium imposed by Netanyahu's second gov. since then - we had a few months of talks late last year. so no - not really 20 years. definitely not 20 peaceful years.
    And the idea of a Bi-National state is delusional. It would never happen. Its a baseless fantasy trying to impose what doesnt work in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria to work in Israel, disregarding the dismal results of such an attempt. BTW, it doesn't really work in Belgium as well, but at least there they have a common religion uniting them. oh, and they haven't really been to war with each other in a while. Israe and Palestine do not share a religion, a language, a culture, an ethnicity or actually anything other than wanting to rule the same piece of land.
    It's a dream of naive westerners (or in this case an Iranian living in the west) that do not realise that not only they dont understand the middle east and that trying to impose post-war peaceful ideas on an area that is still at war, would only lead to more war. moreover, it ignores the most basic real politic notion - If Israel had to choose between unilateral withdrawal from most of the west bank OR a One state - it would leave the west bank before you finish the question. I know that for a fact. I know that because I am close to the Israeli leadership and have been involved and listened to them in many private occasions. in fact, you dont need to be any of that - you just have to be realistic, and not expect Israel to commit suicide in the name of western Ideas and ideals.
    Your depiction of Obama's visit is FACTUALLY wrong. Israel agreed to a previous moratorium on settlements, which the Palestinian leadership ignored for 9 months out of the 10 months that were agreed upon. Following president Obama's visit - there was a choice to be made - either a moratorium OR prisoner release. Israel chose to release Palestinian prisoners. not some small-time crooks or stone-throwers, but people that were incarcerated for murder. This choice was not one-sided. it was negotiated by Secretary Kerry himself and agreed upon by both sides.
    I would be happy to debate the solutions and possible outcomes, but one needs to stick to the facts.

    He's right, but a shame to frame it in this language. Palestine isn't gone. The Palestinian nation lives, its language and customs live, its people persist. Nazareth remains Nazareth, Nablus remains Nablus. Palestinians dwell in national uncertainty; holding myriad IDs, citizenships, statuses. But Palestine isn't dead. The idea of partition for the sake of religious ethnocracy is dead. Perhaps we were naive to ever believe in it.

    He is wrong on so many levels.
    500.000 is not a huge number.
    The land they they occupy is only a small part of the West Bank,
    There is no international law.
    Laws are made by people.
    Who are these people who made this international law and when did they do it.
    There are positions people have on legals issues.
    These positions they take even if the whole world has them does not make them law.
    You can only make law for people in your own country.
    It's not Palestinian land.
    There never were Palestinians in the past so how can there be Palestinian land.
    The land is in dispute.
    No one group has claim to the entire area.
    If these people you call Palestinian would acknowledge this then a agreement could have been made a long time ago that would give them over 80 percent of the land.
    It's their leaders who have refused to compromise who should be blamed for their lack of a state.
    Hamas has declared that the nation we call Israel has no right in the middle east to be no matter how small that nation is and is unwilling to stop fighting until there is no Israel.
    Do you really think Israel will give up it's rightful claim to the land to people who want to destroy them.

      I'm gonna help you out here buddy because you don't know what you're talking about.
      Its a huge part of Palestine. Here's a map.
      reliefweb.int/sites/reliefweb.int/files/resources/MapIsraeli_Settlements_WestBank_Patterns_Growth.pdf
      There is international law. Its called the Geneva Conventions signed after the second World War. Look it up.
      The world created both Palestine and Israel in 1948. The British Mandate of Palestine actually existed before Israel.
      You are a ignorant if you think that Palestine was given the chance at 80% of that land. You just made that up. Shameful.
      And citing a backward idiotic group like Hamas does nothing for your cause. Moderate Arabs the world over have offered to live in peace with Israeli's. It's called The Arab Peace Initiative. Here's the link.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_Peace_Initiative
      Now get to reading. And get a clue.

    • @bornbillsmith
      @bornbillsmith 10 лет назад +1

      ***** The Geneva Convention did not make law.
      If it did then explain the Vietnam war.
      The Arab population of the West bank is much more then 500,000.
      The Jews live in cities and towns where the population density is much higher
      than what the Arabs have and therefore the amount of space they take is much less.
      They want the land that was the old city and the land immediately adjacent to it.
      That in proportion to the entire West bank is less than 10 percent.
      The Arabs can have the rest.
      Hamas was voted in and therefore does represent how the Arabs feel in Gaza and probably also the West Bank.
      For argument sake let's say Israel would give up a claim to most of the West Bank if the Arabs would give up their claim to Jerusalem.
      What would be your position.

    • @marsettenmohn
      @marsettenmohn 10 лет назад

      Yes the Arab population is greater than 500k. That's right.
      Did you look at the map?
      Here's my position. As you know Jerusalem is an important city to Jews, Christians and Muslims. As far as I'm concerned the city should be under both Israeli and Palestinian rule with oversight by the UN. There is precedence for this throughout history.

    First time I heard something true about this problem .. One state will finish the hassle of both people Arabs and Israelis .. And it has to start from Israel, as the powerful side on the equation . Thanks Reza

    If a Palestinian state could accept Jewish communities, it wouldn't be over but their xenophobia is their cage.

    He wanted me to publish a paper I wrote on Muslim extremism and Sharia law but I was busy with life and never got around to it. The CIA wanted me to be an analyst but I never got around to that either. Recently I got into trouble for mentioning Islam in a class while subbing in a high school. They assumed I was coming from a midwest hick perspective not knowing my group of friends in college were all Muslims from the Middle East, my mom was the Principal at a Muslim School, and that I have many Muslim friends, and attended The American International School in Vienna Austria getting to know folks from all over the World. Small minds are frustrating.

    Reza, thank you for being straight forward. It is a shame how weak the US when it comes to Israel and how a tiny little country controls the world superpower. That will not end well.

    Totally agree with Reza. Had the Good people of Palestine accepted their land in 1948, 1950, 1954, 1958, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2008, 2010 perhaps the Palestinians would have their State. You just cant be so arrogant when youre on the recieving end....

    I think today Reza will agree with me that there can now only be a one state for all who live in Israel/West Bank and Gaza. There two state solution is long past its sell by date.

    Reza is forgetting one thing, Israel, in more than one occasion, reallocated israelis from their homes and gave up land in return for peace.

    has anyone ever asked reza how he feels about gays? if you say you're a practicing muslim, isn't true that you feel as if homosexuality is a crime? he seems reasonable enough to where he would answer the question, but can he reconcile his answer with his beliefs in his religion?

    • @BinMisfer
      @BinMisfer 8 лет назад

      +Spiderman Why Islam in specific? Are you saying christianity or judaism allow homosexuality? All three Abrahamic religions criminalize it. And by the way, in Quran there is no single sentence criminalize it, only Hadith (second source of Islamic Jurisprudence), which many believe Hadith is not mandatory to comply with.

    • @PNL_King

      Bachir Messaouri then he is not muslim... that is what if he is... and thanks for the compliment about being a bigot... in a world where people bomb each other over texts written in BC times about whose god is better than the other, and where "men of cloth" touch little boys, the word "bigot" is a huge compliment!!!! thanks again

    • @bachirmessaouri4772
      @bachirmessaouri4772 8 лет назад

      He is whatever he wants to be and he defines himself the way he wants it too, as long as he doesn't despise other people for being different. His private beliefs or inclinations are none of your business.
      And no, being treated as a bigot is not a compliment at all. You probably don't know the definition of it.
      Some say their god is better than the other ones. You just say that YOU are better than them. That's worse.
      You just shift the problem without even knowing that you are just the same.
      As them, you try to prove that you are on the good side. Whoever does that is different but just the same. Same old story.
      Live your life and let the others live theirs. Your supremacy is not as obvious as you might think it is.
