I'm sorry but "calling out" somebody for "blasphemy" is (at least from my Central European pov) more cringe than any song anyone have ever written. This is 21st century, not middle ages.

You're acting like just because it's the 21st century doesn't mean that people aren't passionate enough about their beliefs to defend them. That's objectively false.

While I respect some of these opinions, I feel with the songs you criticised you just missed the point or had a very surface level view. You’re perfectly entitled to your opinion, but saying that a song is bad or ‘ugly’ due to it being blasphemous is really shallow. Saying “your good Lord doesn’t need to lift a finger” is not disrespectful and she’s not trying to call herself God she’s just saying she thinks she can make [him] a better person. It seems you just had to punch this video through in time in order for its contents to still be relevant, and in doing so you’ve mustered up weak criticisms for many of the songs.

Religious Trauma is a motif throughout the album tho. And whenever she mentions religion, she mentions it in a negative light. Ofc any religious person may take offense to lyrics like that. Even without the religious aspect tho, I can fix him is just a boring, bland song.

She literally says "...and only I can", as if she is some sort of God herself. Blatant blasphemy right in front of our eyes.

She said "and only I can..." to demonstrate her love towards him, she isn't acting as a God.
She wants to convince him, God, us and herself; how much she loves this man. She knows he's racist, and an extremely problematic person but she wants the relationship to work so she has to "fix his behaviour" and since she doesn't want him to love anyone else she states "only she can" reinforcing her desperation.
When she realises she can't fix him on her own she gives up and leaves him over to God.

Very happy to see you back. Our opinions on music only align maybe a little more than 50% of the time, but I've always respected your opinion. Pretty lackluster streak Taylor has been on for me over the last decade almost. Really the only album I've really liked since 1989 was Folklore. Hopefully she takes a good amount of time off, and comes back with some more fire and motivation to make a solid record.

Great review. As a fan of Taylor Swift, yeah this one just wasn’t it for me. There were parts of the album that made it a slog to get through. T-Swift has made albums in the past where the longer runtime was well utilized. Speak Now, Folklore are prime examples of that. Tortured Poets Department is not that unfortunately.
My favorites are Guilty As Sin, I Can Do It With A Broken Heart, LOML and Fortnight. I personally find LOML to be the best song on the album with the emotion pouring out through the lyrics. But outside of those songs, I agree with other comments out there saying these songs sound identical to each other. I give her new album a 5 as well for now, maybe it grows on me.

if you let yourself take offense at music for your own personal religious convictions or whatever, then you aren't a good critic, or journalist, or whatever you style yourself as. you dont have to like blasphemy, or whatever, but if you arent able to actually engage with a work on its own merits then reviewing music isnt something you should be doing. a work of art using religious similes or imagery to convey some kind of message isnt 'disrespecting religion'. if you actually looked a little bit harder im sure youd find lots to hate about ttpd due to its actual flaws such as the lyrics, the production, and so on.

idk about this album, i gave it a 7/10 to begin with, as there are imo quite a few really solid tracks but the lyricism obviously isn’t that great, and tbh it was kinda evident to begin with when i heard she was releasing a song called ‘who’s afraid of little old me’, i’d probably give it a 5 or maybe a light 6/10

Little old me is an idiom used to fake modesty and is often used in a self deprecating way. Respectfully disagree this is her most relatable work to me but I understand it’s not for everyone. I don’t feel an emotional draw to 1989 and it’s her album I revisit the least
