Nurses: Negative Complaints and What to do

  • Ever since our hospital reimbursement depended on patient satisfaction, customer perception and approval have been a huge topic; especially for nurses, who are in direct patient care. I have mixed feelings about this, I know customer service is important. But, in a hospital a patient’s perception is not always correct. Additionally, this places doctors and nurses in uncomfortable situations especially concerning pain medications…
So ultimately, I like the idea that they are focusing on our patients, however, I do not think it is correct that part of the bill will be either paid or not paid based on this perception. In this video I explain a situation of a patient who was drowsy and forgetful. However, one person complained about a perception which was incorrect and suddenly there are people coming at me from all corners.
I want to share this with you, because I know that whenever I experience things like this (and I have many similar stories lol). That you probably also will encounter situations that you may be blamed for that were beyond your control, or you didn’t even know about them. I hope you find comfort in this story and also find the patients to simply solve the situation that has now become apparent to you and then leave it alone.
I think what makes a lot of nurses mad or miserable is that situations happen and then they tell everyone and their brother about how they were wrongly treated. I know it may seem like I’m doing that here in this video (just realized that lol). However, that is not the case, because I did not discuss this with my coworkers and I shared it here with you to help you understand that these types of situations happen to everyone.
I hope this helped you a lot! If you liked it please give the video a thumbs up, subscribe to the channel & also share it with your friends!
See you next Monday! Be prepared to be Motivated :D
    Lots of love,

Thank you for doing a video on this exact topic! I never realized part of nursing is learning to deal with negative complaints made by patients about every aspect of your nursing care. Whether it is true or not I’ve been encountering this on a daily basis . I’m learning to deal with difficult patients but it’s still a challenge for a new nurse. My manager makes me feel like I’m a bad nurse or inadequate because I don’t know how to deal with difficult patients. I’m learning if I have a problem with a patient I can’t handle to go to my charge and at times they have had to intervene. Sometimes you need to ask for help and try to address every concern but if patient is being irrational then I go for help. I never knew this side to nursing until I started working as a nurse. I get the same complaints that a patient been calling for hours when they’ve been asleep or clearly not been calling. I think if there’s a lot of complaints on a unit it needs to be a group effort where the whole team finds a solution not where one nurse gets attacked by management

Key words "some people" remember there are patients who understand the importance of having a good quality RN by your side.

it is important to have a good one by your side. The problem is finding one. Ive been in and out of the hospital and the last few years spent time in other hospitals visiting sick family members and im here to tell you for having the smartest Doctors on the planet we have the worst health care on the planet. BTW this bullshit of nurses passing out meds needs to stop. thats what we have pharmacists for. Start listening to your patients and stop talking and gossiping. it's even worse in Nursing homes. you guys lost my respect years ago.........

What's the average/standard nurse-patient ratio in the US? Here in Canada we generally have 4-5 patients per 1 nurse (day shift). I find it strange that ratios are so high in the US!

Depends on what unit you're on. If it is a regular med/surg floor the nurse may have between 3-4 (rarely 5) patients where as if you are in the ICU, the nurse may only have 1-2 patients.

Something I want to add. Yes don't let it get you down but also learn from it. Do you do rounds q 2 hr? or 4? Is there a call system where someone else can answer for you while you are at lunch? If so, why wasn't that system used? Find out why it happened and try to improve the system

Hello there Caroline. The important thing here is that your MANAGERs and the DON (and etc) supported YOU and didn't use this complaint as a way to ding your metrics and keep you only at "average" rating for the year.
Sadly, what I hear is that more & more facilities are evaluating nurses solely based on patient surveys. God, I hope that changes soon.

Yeah well, those “non-complaint” complaints are still documented on your record and will still be used against you in any future discipline meetings so better not discount it as “nothing”. And then to be caught “not documenting” every single thing…yeah, upper management will be watching you like a hawk trying to find anything with which to fire you over.
